tsoukase··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
To paraphrase the saying, People have the inequality they deserve. The USA is a developing country in that regard. The citizens tolerate and sometimes support the amount of inequality as well as the thin social net as motivational factors for growth. But this stance doesn't lead far away. When the low hanging fruit of "growth for all" is cut, the rich start going berserk against the community. I think we are at this tipping point.
tsoukase··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
The USA are an outlier in the developed world. Extreme wealth, extremely free market and a tiny social net seen only in the developing world. From that POV inequality reaches the expected magnitude like Argentina or Malaysia with the same political qualities. Nothing surprising here.
tsoukase··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
Because AI is a tech invention and it's expected to be applied in a tech environment. As it cannot replace hand working, it cannot replace travel agents, doctors or lawyers because the latter put in human mental work that cannot be substituted yet and there is hardly any obvious chance in the near future.
tsoukase··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
Every patient is different and has their story to tell about benzos. The optimal and desirable usage is short-term for acute stress but this is the exception. Long term use either legitimately due to chronic internal stress or due to cold addiction (the line is blurry sometimes) is the norm.

A note about patients having taken a benzo due to stress and then complain they became worse after stopping it: you don't know if you were even worse without taking it in the first place.

tsoukase··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
It's impossible to move the green train when fossil fuels are so cheap. Let the gasoline become 6 euros per liter and come again.
tsoukase··on New 'super ice' 10 times stronger, bringing it close to the strength of concrete
It provides the Krete framework for building your vacation to Crete island.
tsoukase··on Things to know when you get cancer
Cancer, the third leading cause of death, is two diseases: a curable one, even with some disabilities, where everyone is happy and a deadly one, where even the doctors turn their back and care less. If you are lucky, the health care system is with you, if not you are on your own and the clock is ticking backwards. The official therapy for the second case is paliative care but it involves a wide variety of measures.
tsoukase··on Things that apparently cause cancer
Cancer is caused by:

- a complex interaction between hundreds of genes, which is just called 'bad luck' due its unknown nature

- impartial immunosuppression due to stress, lack of sleep or the hundreds of other external factors. (Without the cancer fighting immune system we would get a cancer very fast, though slower than fatal infections)

The first is barely recognizable and therefore non modifiable. We cam measure and manage only the second.

tsoukase··on ADHD, autism or complex trauma? [pdf]
Attention deficit is a symptom that is caused by almost any mental and somatic disease. ADHD is a diagnosis after any other disease is thoroughly excluded and therefore is much less common than the symptom.

Any mental issue, symptom or disease lie on a spectrum, in terms of quality and severity. Psychiatric diagnoses are overlapping in more than 50% often making a single diagnosis incomplete.

tsoukase··on On social reality in China
In Greece the postwar generation was born in poverty after WWII and a civil war. But they created wealth, enough to live in relative luxury: multiple homes, ample available income and free time, holidays around the world. If you are willing to live, you will in the same generation. The current generation pays the cost of that expansion and that is a classic economic lesson.
tsoukase··on Has Violence Against Teachers Become Accepted by Society?
Violence should be unacceptable on every level (personal, social, inter/national). But it still happens because we are humans. Now, violence against teachers, doctors/nurses and other service professions is more acceptable than in the past, simply because the mass shows less respect to everything, including these services.
tsoukase··on Back and shoulder surgery is often worse than useless
Back and shoulder surgery contra/indications must pass through an AND gate. Appropriate age, symptoms, duration, no response to drugs, specific target in the MRI. If one fails, it is contraindicated, which happens in 95-99%, at least for my patients.
tsoukase··on Six-year-old breaks women's world Rubik's Cube record [video]
This is an amazing endeavour for a child but I am sceptical about the transfer of this dexterity to real life achievements and eventually happiness. My son was obsesssed at that age with LEGO, making his own sets and uploading them to public repos, and now at 11 yo all he wants is to be a soccer player with no interest in any intellectual activity.
tsoukase··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Cells are specialized to their function, as well as to their diseases. The trade offs mentioned in the article seem simplistic, trying to capture the billions of years of evolution. Repair, regeneration, regrowth and cancer have distinct mechanisms that vary from cell type to type.

Liver regeneration has been known since the ancient times: in Greek mythology an eagle was eating the liver of Prometheus every day for thousands of years after Zeus punished him for donating the fire to humans but he survived to be saved by Hercules.

tsoukase··on AI Has No Wisdom and Neither Will You
I love when I can reason about and follow the LLMs' output, when I learn from it. I hate when it makes me dumber and less efficient.
tsoukase··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
There were the fundaments of communism two centuries ago.
tsoukase··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
Hemispheric neurons seem totally different than those of brain stem, the latter being more like an extention of spinal cord. Higher neurons are not only specialized but they form sophisticated centres and complicated networks that process the highest sensory and motor signals and form what human is. The brain stem only contains nuclei and autonomic centres that are of low complexity. We knew they are different, kudos to the team that explored, proved, published and even applied this knowledge.
tsoukase··on Douglas Hofstadter: Analogy as the Core of Cognition [video]
In ancient Greek the word Logos means Reason and Analogy. He explicitly states that they are not the same. So I guess we have a debate.
tsoukase··on Trey Parker and Matt Stone Are Changing the Name of South Park to South America
I suggest we support the, already in use, name of America for the whole continent, so, almost for free, USA means all north and south America countries together and we are done with land. Now the oceans are tricky: Atlantic can become East American sea and Pacific, West American sea. Or just Little Boy and Fat Man.
tsoukase··on AlphaGenome Atlas: a high-resolution map of human DNA
May be that's the reason for the alpha naming. We are waiting for a stable release (just kidding).
tsoukase··on Switzerland's Federal Government Is Replacing Microsoft on 3k Computers
I wonder where does Linux have more share, in personal desktops, in private companies or in government.
tsoukase··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
This might be a source of personal data for Facebook so the next day they present you the product you discussed with your wife last night.
tsoukase··on Actively exploited sandbox RCE in all Chromium versions
I believe programmers still write in C(++) after memory safe options, in order to continue being occupied afterwards, fixing the bugs that will arise. Without criminals, police is obsolete.
tsoukase··on The Real Luxuries In Life
Human needs are tricky. We usually hold basic needs as luxuries. Time and health are basic needs while luxuries should be some unneeded details, like a larger car or home. The most basic human need is oxygen, but I think this falls under health.
tsoukase··on Dogs can distinguish between fearful and angry or sad human faces
My dog knows my complete mood complex instantly every time I show up. It's a social/emotional intelligence unmatched by human. Unfortunatelly, or hopefuly for the human race, he cannot combine this ability with enough cognitive intelligence.
tsoukase··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
After 50 years since I was born for the first I didnt eat grapes from my backyard in Southern Europe because they dried up due to extreme heat. In the rest of my life I might miss any other fruit.
tsoukase··on Play Store blocks AuroraStore, hurting GrapheneOS users
Please add to the title "... and all other degoogled devices", which are many orders of magnitude more than GOS: almost all Huawei devices (degoogled out of the box), custom Roms, rooted and all non-logged in. I am a non-GOS hurt victim.
tsoukase··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
If you don't express your comment in logic notation, I will not understand it. Though you might be right.
tsoukase··on The world may have less time than it thinks on climate change
The globe couldnt afford a couple of massive energy consumers (USA and Europe) let alone three more (China, India and Africa). Even if Renewables or EVs reach a pesky 30% in limited areas, CO2 levels will not care.

Total climate change is almost 100% sure, there is no return. Or, for the optimists, the time we have is until the next elections.

tsoukase··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
The year of linux desktop lies in the heart of each of it's users.
