tunap··on What comes up when you flush
To keep the dog & cat from drinking out of it. Very unpopular with the quadrupeds & half of the bipeds.

The growth that occurs on the underside of the lid makes for a good reminder that cleaning the toilet is (over-)due.

tunap··on Hiding in plain sight? The argument for invisible aliens (2020)
More plausibly, they are seeding the Demon Haunted World theory to distract the populous from their immediate problems. I found the timing of resurgent UFO/UAP stories & official statements at the height of the pandemic quite dubious.

I did/do really enjoy the thought experiments posited in these comments. For more than a few minutes my mind's eye forgot that my finances have been a slow-motion trainwreck these last 3 years.

tunap··on Ask HN: Are Protonmail.com Addresses Snubbed?
I don't disagree, but it seems better to respond with appreciation for their candidness.
tunap··on Ask HN: Are Protonmail.com Addresses Snubbed?
I had myname.com for 15 years. I let it go when I had email hosting issues, the Covid hit & I scrutinized my cost:benefit of inflating registrar and hosting fees over the years.
tunap··on Ask HN: Are Protonmail.com Addresses Snubbed?
Good to know that is a factor, thanks. You and the parent posters' disclosure is appreciated.
tunap··on Ask HN: Are Protonmail.com Addresses Snubbed?
Thanks. I tried FastMail a few years back. I had delayed mail problems. Reached out to them. Their email, informing everything looked good on their end, had a 4 hour delay in the header. Heh.
tunap··on The impotence of being clever
I thought of Leto Atreides II in the 4th Dune book.

edit: not the op.

tunap··on Twitter’s advertising losses are piling up
We just passed 1 month since acquisition, and yet the multitude of articles(and 1000's of posts here on HN) calling out Twitter for not paying it's debts makes it seem like they are > 30/60/90 in arrears. I understand it's a shit show, but pouring gas on the fire is not helping; the exact opposite, as I presume it is intended.

Weaponized Media has gone mainstream.

tunap··on Capsaicin is a psychoactive substance
Following extra spicy foods with a pint or two of milk neutralizes the post pyrotechnics, for me. If lactose intolerant, sugar works, but not as well(Perhaps in large/unhealthy quantity?). YMMV.

Edit: I always presumed the high after spicy food was endorphins.

tunap··on The Exceptionally American Problem of Rising Roadway Deaths
Ask most persons who text + drive and they will self-report their advanced multi-tasking skills. Ask anyone who shares space around them on the road and that opinion will be, approaching 100%, contradictory. Situational awareness and anticipation are key components to safely operating a vehicle, with or without 'assistance technologies'.

tunap··on What if the dinosaurs hadn't gone extinct? Our world might look different
Harry Harrison turned Russel's 'thought experiment' into a trilogy of novels. Much more entertaining & thought provoking than the SSR series, to my (then) 15 year old brain.

tunap··on Twitter has lost 50 of its top advertisers since Musk took over, report says
They certainly went full Fox News 180° when Trump was elected.
tunap··on This Mars Documentary Required Many Sols
Sounds good, will be watching.

Squyres' book, Roving Mars, is highly recommended. A deep, technical accounting of his life-long ambition to get his equipment on Mars.

tunap··on The tragic birth of FM radio (2006)
Ken Burns made a documentary:

tunap··on A 3D-printed ethernet RJ45 clip to secure/repair/fix broken tab (2020)
Unsure, sounds like a dark pattern or, being generous, maybe liability avoidance wordage. I have crimped >1000 non "Pass-Thru™" connectors(outdoor/shielded) with mine.

edit: expanded

tunap··on A 3D-printed ethernet RJ45 clip to secure/repair/fix broken tab (2020)
Klein hand tools. Full stop.

Below is my favorite. Caveat, it takes some getting accustomed to if you're used to the standard plier style(They make those, too).

edit:plier handle style, not wrench

tunap··on Improving Firefox stability on Windows by retrying failed memory allocation
Agreed. There is a pop-up asking if you want to help at install(FF & TB). Big data has earned a reputation for just cause. If the Mozillas want to differentiate themselves to get that trust, aka opt-in, I encourage them. So far, "No, thanks".
tunap··on Termux on Android 5 or 6
The only problems I experienced are when the wireless bands are deprecated. I'd still be rolling my n900, otherwise. Old drivers or not, there is/was still some development going on; Leste & PostmarketOS, IIRC.
tunap··on AdBlock Free add-on blocked by Firefox
>AdBlock was sold to an anonymous buyer in 2015

And immediately started allowing "acceptable ads", selling usage data & AdBlock Plus came to be. I thought the original was dead already. Mozilla should have blocked it 7 years ago.

tunap··on Termux on Android 5 or 6
To add: Custom kernel, de-googled ROM(sans Play Store) & side-loading apps.
tunap··on FCC Requires Broadband Providers to Display Labels to Help Consumers
"Typical" speeds & "typical" latency.

Still allowed to bundle services, a.k.a. obfuscate prices.

Although a cursory scan, I did not see it specify throttled speeds on certain unlimited data plans; search found no results for 'throttled' and nowhere to list it on the label.

>we decline to adopt new rules, practices, or procedures specifically for enforcement of the label we adopt in this Order

Nothing to see here.

tunap··on Ask HN: Again: The “I want to do everything but end up doing nothing” dilemma
In a year or two, when that notebook has been filled and replaced with newer notebooks, make some time to go back and reread. It is wild sometimes, re-reading things I forgot I know/knew. Pretty sure this helps for recall, even if not, it is still nostalgically entertaining.

Edit: swapped 'enlightening' for 'entertaining'. Admittedly, could be both.

tunap··on Content moderation is broken (2019)
Back in the golden age of phpBBs, I would give posters 1 notice when veering OT or getting nasty, then transfer the (sub-)thread to our 'FlameWar' room. There, they could, and would, be as nasty as they liked to each other. I failed to stem the flow of toxicity, but merely re-directed it. It worked out pretty well, and ironically, the more toxic categories were the most popular viewed threads for trolls and lurkers, alike. Go figure.
tunap··on Things I've noticed while visiting the ICU
>"people need to sleep"

Sleep is almost impossible with regular check-ups... 30 min or 60 min, don't remember. Excepting the comatose and most medicated(maybe not?), a person's sleep cycle is unable to reach REM when a stranger approaches and fiddles on regular intervals. I would think monitoring from afar(sensors, cameras) would be more beneficial, but I was informed the liability factors preclude such remote monitoring.

edit: to add context, I slept in the room on separate occasions with 2 family members. While tests were not performed, the regular checks were mandated. I was exhausted after my shifts ended.

tunap··on Twitter in chaos as employees accept Musk’s invitation to quit their jobs
If you step back from the trainwreck and look around, the job market is not good anywhere. Some definitely will find fast employment, but > or = quality & remuneration is not a given. For the rest, 3 months may cover on-boarding time, if they strike an offer quickly. This just sucks all the way around. I wonder if EM has a master plan or a brain tumor.
tunap··on Chinese chain-smoking marathon runner completes 26 miles in less than 3.5 hours
That was my coach's rationalization for not sending me to state competition at the end of my freshman year, despite my quali's. I put a "head" onto his name when I said thanks, got in lots of trouble and went and got a job instead of further competition. Best decision ever. Thanks, Richard!
tunap··on Mom handcuffed, jailed for 8-year-old son walking half a mile
Smaller county Texas LEOs make their own rules, in direct contradiction to state law(s). They are also wont to lifting bills out of wallets, FYI.

tunap··on EVs are the least reliable vehicle type: Consumer Reports
Replying to my post to reply to all replies... that's a recipe for disaster, IMO.

I wouldn't travel outside a major metro, or on a weekend, without a spare; phone service gets sketchy when rural & the likelihood for monetary abuse by rando Roadside Service providers is likely to be very abusive, as I have experienced 1st hand. I always have a spare tire, jack, plug kit & air pump in my vehicles.

I do travel much, 20-30k miles a year, so I likely experience more issues than average... was zip-tying my shift linkage after a rock bounced up and broke it a couple months back.
