uncoder0··on Collision course: why are cars killing more and more pedestrians?
Yep I'd guess it was the phones and touchscreen controls. I remember in 2007 working on an autonomous car for the urban grand challenge. My team was talking about distracted driving because the iPhone had recently launched and someone said, 'I really hope this autonomous driving tech is not more than 10 years away because by then these touch screen phones will be fully saturated and drivers will be 10x worse' or something of that nature. Pretty prescient observation.

Your other observation is equally plausible but I'd have to look at the data.

uncoder0··on Airbus hit by series of cyber attacks on suppliers
Seems like China would have an incentive to get the other IP from Airbus's suppliers to make their own competitor.
uncoder0··on CIA Photo Taken Just Before Its Operatives First Entered Afghanistan After 9/11
Give it a shot. Typically they'll pixelate then blur. Doubt there is any detail left.
uncoder0··on Amazon pledges net zero carbon emissions by 2040 and 100% renewables by 2030
Easy when you have a trillion dollar company and don't pay your invoices on time. :)

Good lip service though.

uncoder0··on French high court rules that Steam can’t ban users from reselling digital games
I really wonder how this will work with VAC bans and cheating. You can be banned from a game by various means VAC is one of them and Battleye is another popular tool. If a person gets banned from DayZ then they sell their game to buy a new copy that isn't banned does the buyer of their original game remain banned?
uncoder0··on Colt is ending production of AR-15s
In the US the lower receiver of the AR-15 platform is considered the firearm. You can buy 80% lowers for glocks, 1911's and ARs without having to do a Federal Firearms Transfer and then mill them yourself or if you want to be really fancy get a ghostgunner. https://ghostgunner.net/featured-products/
uncoder0··on Colt is ending production of AR-15s
300BLK aka 7.62x35mm or 300 whisper are a much better caliber all around for hunting than 5.56 or .308. The penetration of a .30 caliber and at 210gr+ it's very nice to shoot suppressed so you don't have to wear ear protection. It's also nice to not annoy/scare any people out on hikes a mile away.
uncoder0··on Colt is ending production of AR-15s
The technical term for 5.56 and similar rounds is intermediate cartridge and includes 7.62×39mm, 5.56×45mm NATO, 5.45×39mm & 7.62x35mm among other cartridges. The definite from wiki is 'An intermediate cartridge is a rifle/carbine cartridge that is shorter than typical full-power battle rifle cartridges, but still has greater length than pistol/personal defense weapon cartridges.'

uncoder0··on N. Korea Took in $2B in Cyberattacks to Fund Weapons Program: U.N. Report
The same goes for firearms. The moment they can defend themselves is the moment they take the food and resources for themselves. Having your population near starvation and defenseless is the main method used to maintain power as an oppressive fascist regime.
uncoder0··on FBI: Delivery drivers involved in Amazon theft ring
Not OP but, from what I've heard it sucks working at Amazon even in engineering.
uncoder0··on 3D model of slave ship brings harrowing history to life
Weird. Because of privacy settings I can't view the 3d model walk-through video. Anyone else getting the issue? I disabled ublock but no dice.

uncoder0··on Cargo ships are emitting boatloads of carbon, and nobody wants to take the blame
Thanks for rephrasing. I wasn't fully awake when I commented.
uncoder0··on Cargo ships are emitting boatloads of carbon, and nobody wants to take the blame
Aren't some containers refrigerated for meats and other perishables? I would think if that were the case any increase in journey time might be offset by the increased fuel required to cool anything that needed to be climate controlled. As it stands the electricity to cool a container ship is mostly free due to the giant motor you're already running to turn the prop.
uncoder0··on Neuralink Live Stream [video]
Now imagine, thought theft, similar to modern day organ theft. Creepy pervs preying on young people to acquire their intimate memories and then selling them.
uncoder0··on Cloudflare Network Performance Issues
Yep, I'm seeing 502's all over the web as of a few minutes ago.
uncoder0··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
To be fair, in the same logs it shows they removed mod permissions from one of the mods. The picture it paints is that the Admins were making it harder for them to moderate the subreddit.
uncoder0··on Google exec responds to Project Veritas video about bias
This post like every other post about Project Veritas have been heavily flagged off the front page. Looks like damage control, not a good look.
uncoder0··on Study: Tesla Autopilot misleading, overestimated more than similar technology
Do you think pilots sleep while the passenger jet you're riding in is on 'autopilot'?
uncoder0··on Two potentially life-friendly planets found orbiting a nearby star
If birthdays are assumed to be distributed symmetrically. If you were born in august you'd need ~12 fewer people and for April you'd need ~12 more.[1]

Not sure how that looks for the worlds population probably averages out pretty well regardless.

Would be curious to know the rough bitrate during teleop. If you can and don't mind sharing.
uncoder0··on Amazon's Satellite Project Will Cost Billions, Jeff Bezos Says
So we'll be at ~20,000 satellites in orbit with this and Starlink. That's four times as many as are currently in orbit.
uncoder0··on Google’s outage meant some Nest users couldn’t unlock doors or use the AC
Only thing that would make sense to me is that he mounted his TV where the thermostat would be. I could see how a Nest would be useful here because you could use their temperature sensors that you can place anywhere in the house to basically ignore the sensor in the nest unit. If that's not the case I would think he may be spending a bit more on AC and power than necessary.
uncoder0··on U.S. military to analyze 350B social media posts to understand popular movements
Yep this is nothing new. Was working on similar and it's all public domain back in 2013-2014.
uncoder0··on U.S. Sends China Signal with F-35-Laden Warship in Disputed Sea
If we're talking about most developed cities outside they US they're going to have a hard time waging an asymmetric war without a substantial amount of semi-automatic rifles. If we're talking about better armed populace like you are in the middle east yes it is indeed very difficulty to hold a city with such a force.
uncoder0··on F-35's Towed Decoys
It's all about selecting the right tool for the job. You use the F-35's, F-22's and your long range stand off weapons from bombers to clear Surface to air threats and then use your F-15's, F-16's and F-18's which in some configurations can carry up to two dozen AA missles to clean up the low tech adversaries. If you're interested in getting a hang of how to deploy these weapons I recommend the Korean Missle Crisis scenario in Command. http://www.matrixgames.com/products/681/details/Command.Live...

Warning: Command is less of a game and more of a battlefield simulator and has a very steep learning curve if you're not used to the systems and tactics required to deploy modern combat power. I've been 'playing' it for years and without my background I'd have a very tough time. I can still only really play NATO scenarios as I'm not familiar enough with Chinese or Russian systems to use them effectively.

uncoder0··on Julia Reda: EU has rubber-stamped copyright reform including Articles 13 and 11
Very surprised there is not a front page thread on Article 13 on HN.
uncoder0··on Nvidia's $99 Jetson Nano Is an AI Computer for DIY Enthusiasts
Cool thanks for all the info. I just assumed the M.2 slots were all standardized. Didn't realize they were different.
uncoder0··on Nvidia's $99 Jetson Nano Is an AI Computer for DIY Enthusiasts
Why would you use the M.2 for wifi and not a super fast disk in that slot? USB bus should be able to handle wifi just fine.
uncoder0··on Chickens Are Bullies – Can Their Behavior Teach Us About Our Own?
It's interesting too that all 4 of those are present to some extent in our schools where much bullying takes place.
uncoder0··on Chickens Are Bullies – Can Their Behavior Teach Us About Our Own?
The OP states that this specific line of inquiry was an exercise in lateral thinking for a project on adolescent bullying.

"So, rather than starting off my research with the deep dive into research papers, think pieces, and news articles that’s all too familiar to me from past endeavors, I decided to embrace lateral thinking."
