unsubstantiated··on Dispute in the CNCF: Israelis cancel participation in Kubecon
I'm surprised one of the options isn't "pro-them killing eachother off" because that seems like the best of the bunch.
unsubstantiated··on Why is the plural form of "house" not "hice"? (2016)
The way ChatGPT4 phrases an answer for this sort of a question absolves it of smug pretentiousness that is common to HN.

Whether or not its a correct answer, however...

>I deeply believe everyone is virtuous, as they personally define it. For the most part, I believe the world’s virtues are common. We all want peace, joy, safety, and comfort. We all want to smile.

Well I don't. And this belief isn't any more valid or invalid than mine, or anyone else's. Regardless of the flimsy definition of virtuousness, there are people out there who are hellbent on causing harm, and some are petty killers who are caught easily for tormenting and murdering their own little children, while others are in positions of serious power and leverage over nations who start wars and worse. Are there good people? Yes. Is everyone after peace, joy, safety and comfort? No Master Wayne, some people just want to watch the world burn.

The people in charge of Social Media aren't good people.

unsubstantiated··on The Cost of Living/Housing Crisis
It should be expected by now I suppose, but MeFi's comment section is of much, much higher quality than HN on this topic.
unsubstantiated··on I come here not to bury Delphi, but to praise it (2019)
Perhaps unknown to the HN community is that C# periodically gets Delphi features reintroduced in it in one way or another.

More recently, C# 9 and 10 have returned the concept of `records` (preferably immutable objects) along with the `with` keyword for making copies with some of the properties changed from the source to the dest object.

It has been an interesting decade watching HN metaphorically (and sometimes literally i'm sure) shift around uncomfortable in their chair as the all-encompassing-nightmare M$FT creates two languages that are more and more dominating of developer marketshare - C# and TypeScript.

He didn't spend all his time shitposting BBS/Newsgroups/Slashdot/HN while pretending he knew the one simple trick to obviate global political and economic turmoils?
unsubstantiated··on Publishers in Canada urge regulator to prevent Meta from restricting news access
This is one game where MAD is the winning move to play. I'd like for Meta et al to block Canadian news. I'd also like for Canadian news to block Meta et al. Their endless funnels of garbage that predominantly serve to rile people up are something we could all do with less of. And that goes from both sides.

> Am I the only one who sees a jumbled stream of barely coherent semi-thoughts and word salad?

Probably one of the few given the majority of the comments are directly addressing and dissecting each point of the post.

It is not jumbled, but it is 1) the way Hotz usually writes, 2) unconventional, 3) cross-domain laterally connected, and 4) somewhat heavy for a sunday morning read.

Hotz generally doesn't do "barely coherent semi-thoughts." I think the label is needlessly harsh. He's just addressing the contemporary nonsense by bridging them together and calling their bullshit out.

It's sad to see so many of the replies to your comment are people attacking him for no good reason.

unsubstantiated··on The way out of burnout (2016)
The word "narcissism" has been weaponized as a form of slandering whoever you're after. It's closer to a new variant of "creepy," but now with 200% more Science™ behind it.

The word "burnout," hasn't suffered the same unfortunate fate, although there are those of us who are waiting for competition to declare that they have burned out so we can take their share of the profits etc. It's more of a self-inflicted wound.

unsubstantiated··on Cult of the Dead Cow wants to save internet privacy with new encryption protocol
Do cDc members even comprehend the current internet landscape? Is this poised to be in the same vein as the TBL gaffe of making a new internet?

Although they're putting in noble efforts, I think they are out of touch with the actual contemporary internet culture. It's not the world they grew up in.

unsubstantiated··on Mindfulness-based programs show promise in reducing psychological distress
>How could the mechanics of a forum be set up to achieve this?

Asking people to post their work and downvoting/flagging/banning them if they refuse.

unsubstantiated··on Confronting failure as a core life skill
A bit short on meat to be honest.

> Surprisingly, my new friends don’t focus on our failures. They are simply curious about the details of the adventure.

That's too bad.

Here's as an actual core life skill when it comes to failure: you want to stack as many failures into as few attempts as you possibly can. Save yourself the trouble and the time. Even if someone tells you about how they failed, and you listen, you are still at high risk of making the same failures, because you truly don't know any better.

I'm sure there is lots he learned in the four years but this post doesn't really talk about that, so I'm not sure if he quite confronted it yet, nor developed it as a core life skill.
