valjavec··on Measuring the impact of Google Analytics (2013)
How much was cost for all that? Or how much would it cost to process 1m pages like this. Do some entity extraction on each page?
valjavec··on Anxiety over the new Gmail Compose
My particular issue with the new maps is when I search for a new unknown city and zoom out to see bigger area - pointer is gone! Try searching for city Kazan in Russia and try to quickly get an idea where the city is. Pointer or any mark of fhe city is gone when you zoom out enough!
valjavec··on Galaxy Nexus + data plan + VoIP support = free calls
It is a killer combination and I'm doing it for a while with Nexus S and CSipSimple App while roaming abroad.

I'm from Europe. And best part is that my mobile operator has SIP gateway, so wherever abroad I am, I always get myself local 3G data SIM card (it's 10 EUR for 1GB on average) so I can use data as much as I want, and I can call and being called (with my own number) with prices just like I would be back home - cheap.

Even better is that I can also send SMS with same app (again from my own number). Classic way, when abroad it can be anywhere from 0.15 EUR to 0.40 EUR per SMS when roaming.

Sending SMS works on EDGE, but for calling it needs to be 3G. Sound can delay from time to time, but it's a small price for keeping home-network-prices wherever in the world I am.

valjavec··on Ryanair now presents you with a Recaptcha every time you search for a flight
And they serve Google Ads when you search for a flight. Unbelivable.
valjavec··on Nokia In-App Purchasing - monetize apps for basic phones in 130+ countries
Nice Nokia PR
valjavec··on It Is A Violation Of The Adobe Trademark To Say An Image Was "Photoshopped"
Trademarks must never be abbreviated.

Correct: Take a look at the new features in Adobe® Photoshop® software. Incorrect: Take a look at the new features in PS.

Adobe.... :/

valjavec··on Infrastructure Debt
Best quote to conclude article:

"Don’t be scared of change, be scared of the debt growing in your code base and in in your infrastructure. It won’t go away and there is no government bailout on the way to fix it."

valjavec··on Addictive and sticky HTML5 experiment
They also have a Flash version - http://spielzeugz.de/lab/sticky-thing/flash/

While there is no way to run Flash on iOS devices, accelerometer works only with iOS.

I belive that's what Steve was talking about in his Thought on Flash where he concludes:

"Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short."

Kudos to html5 and guys creating this experiment. It's awesome!

valjavec··on Istanbul Isiklarius traffic lights
Ingolstadt (city of Audi HQ) had (still has?) this experiment.

Cars were getting signal from traffic ligjts and you as a driver got a warning sign like: "drive 30 km/h" to hit green light without stopping.

valjavec··on Ask HN: How should I apply for U.S. jobs as a non-resident?
My bad. Thx for info!
valjavec··on Ask HN: How should I apply for U.S. jobs as a non-resident?
H5 visa is good option too. You have all rights as normal USA citizen and no restrictions.

It lasts for 3y and can be extended for another 3y (I'm not sure what happens after 6y total..).

If you are unemployed for 45days visa will terminate (and you need to leave USA), but renews automatically when you get a new employment (in 3y period).

See more here: http://www.kateraynor.com/z-visa/h5-visa.html

valjavec··on This Guy Has My MacBook
Just check first picture on Tumblr.

"Guy driving away with my MacBook."

So guy steals a laptop and drives away, puts laptop on a seat next to him, with screen up?!?

valjavec··on Would you be interested in a book about technical marketing?
I would!

But I would also be interested in any book that gives new insights, expertise or broaden horizon in a compelling and fascinating way.

Book will be rather judged by how good it is, than what's about.

valjavec··on Why do apps from the same company look worse on Android than on iPhone?
All apps shown are free.
valjavec··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
http://twitter.com/YCnews

Tiny side project to get Hacker News over Twitter with comments. Click on a link in any tweet to see.

valjavec··on Show HN: See my project YCnews: News and Comments "mouse over" apart
I see your point.

Interface probably is confusing. I'll put sign on handlers first to see if that helps.

Thx for idea about parsing, if I go for that it enables many more options about comment display as you pointed out!

valjavec··on Show HN: See my project YCnews: News and Comments "mouse over" apart
Thx for feedback!

Implementation is shiny yup - for now;) I did it as fast as possible to get feedback and see if it's worth putting extra effort in.

Agree on /new issue. Hmm.. perhaps I shall try publishing everything from /new that gets at least a comment or an upvot... will ping you on twitter when done (prob not tomorrow but by the end of the week).

valjavec··on Show HN: See my project YCnews: News and Comments "mouse over" apart
Clickable link http://twitter.com/YCnews
valjavec··on Ask HN: Do you email your best friends?
I use all forms of communications, rank them according to urgency and how distracted I want to be when I get anything back.

In that order probably: Phone call, SMS, Gtalk, Skype, Facebook, Email

valjavec··on Y Combinator's Graham Doesn't See "Bubble" in Technology
In video it's explained like "valuations are high, but it's not a bubble".

Would that mean their growth will stop at certain level for a longer period? I guess realization will need to meet expectation at some level. Expectation for Facebook are sure high, but I doubt it can go go for trillion valuation without multi^2 billion revenue.

Would love to hear more thoughts from Paul.

valjavec··on Designing with Behavioral Economics
You can take a look at Dan Ariely's fascinating talk about the topic from DLD http://www.dld-conference.com/videos/video/predictably-irrat...
valjavec··on Shortest SEO Guide
Google itself stated something like: "build the best website and we'll change our algorithms if needed".

It's an endless game between Matt Cutts his team and SEO spammers but I bet long term on the first one.

valjavec··on The Future of the Tablet, and It Isn’t the iPad 2
Very poor article.

Claiming you can do truly multitasking because it has 2 displays is ridiculous, but that's not the biggest issue in my opinion. More of a problem is that whole vision of this tablet is made on old technologies presented in new form. Ooh, they also added pen!

Sort of like best use of radio, when it appeared as new media, would be reading newspapers.

valjavec··on Making stamps obsolete through SMS
Awesome! They could easily offer tracking of letters or just notifying sender when letter was delivered or innovate even more on top of that.
valjavec··on Google Android Captures #1 Position in U.S. Smartphone Market
This is so funny. Android is gaining it's share and everyone is trying to create iPhone killer. Noone is doing an Android killer:)
valjavec··on IPad's Rivals Can't Beat It on Price
"So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever."

Looks like all the dots are connecting perfects for Jobs and Apple more and more.

valjavec··on Ask HN: Review my startup - Jaxified
My biggest complain is there is no free plan. Acctually I saw later there is 14day free trial and if you can convert big enough % of users to paying customers you rock!

Can't tell you much of data value right now as everything is empty so far, but I could agree with rradu's post. Perhaps that can be a nice tool to track competition.

valjavec··on NASA Scientist Claims Evidence of Alien Life on Meteorite
All the scientists aren't really looking for "Alien Life" but rather "Life outside of planet Earth that looks very much like life on Earth".

To simplify we are made of cells and breathe oxygen but I would argue life can exists in other forms than one we know.

valjavec··on Show HN: Phoneify - 20 hours with Rails 3 & Twilio
Sweet & simple.

2 questions: - works world-wide or US only? - how much do you charge per verification (SMS / voice)... can't find on a website, but I see I have $20 balance

valjavec··on Bedside Cancer Detector
Exactly my thoughts.

We can't deny how versatile smart phones have become, but cutting edge in this case is not iPhone/any other smart phone, but TB Detector.
