vankap··on AWS mistakes to avoid
Create the infrastructure manually and then use Cloudformer tool to generate the template based on the already created infrastructure. You can then edit the generated template to make it more maintainable and you have a nice reusable template.
vankap··on "Free Basics" - Myths and Facts
I can't say how this turns out, but it makes me happy to see the debate this is generating. A lot of people who have never heard of net neutrality are now hearing and thinking about it. That's a definite positive for India and and open internet.
vankap··on Which degrees give the best financial returns?
BYU does produce some really good CS grads though :)
vankap··on Facebook is misleading Indians with its full-page ads about Free Basics
This is deception. Pure and simple. There are many different and ethical ways of providing connectivity to the poor but not at the cost of losing net neutrality.
vankap··on Court orders Google to pay $115k damages for defamatory search engine results
Ripoff Report should have been sued here instead of Google.
vankap··on Indian Regulator Temporarily Suspends Facebook’s Free Basics
Absolutely not. This adversely affects the budding start up industry in India. If Zuckerberg really wants to help poor Indians, then provide access to the entire internet and let them figure out which service helps them out best.

As a compromise, free access to only non-commercial non-profit entities/websites that offer beneficial information is acceptable although not ideal.

vankap··on SpaceX launch webcast: Orbcomm-2 Mission [video]
Congratulations to everyone at SpaceX. This is a proud moment for all of you. And thank you for giving us the chance to watch this LIVE.
vankap··on JetBrains redesigned their website and logos
Not a big fan of all the marketing language on the home page. But it does get better on the individual IDE pages. You see the download link right away and you can scroll down if you need more info.
vankap··on Salvatore Sanfilippo, the author of Redis: from Sicily with talent and passion
You are a huge inspiration. Thank you sir.
vankap··on Codefights
This is very nice. More engrossing than most games I play. Instead of starting over every time I lose, I would prefer if I was penalized and allowed to continue playing. For instance, if I lose round 5, then I will also lose all the points from round 4 and continue playing from round 4 instead. It's just something that I thought would make it more interesting and playable for me.
vankap··on Free Software Foundation issues statement on new iPhone models from Apple
I believe both sides have valid arguments depending on who you think the threat is. If you expect complete control over your data then you would want the system to be open source and transparent. To protect an average smartphone user from malicious apps, a closed and curated system like Apple's appstore makes sense.
vankap··on Apple Unveils The iPhone 5S
If I'm using my fingerprint to protect something, it must be way more valuable than the fingerprint itself. It's like using a key made of gold to protect a box full of rocks.
vankap··on Why My Father Hated India
Hyderabad state had Muslim rulers but not a Muslim majority.
vankap··on I was forced to write a blog post. So I made a code breaking contest.
Note: I have never come across such sizes for salt and block though. I may be totally off.

I am working on the assumption that the first few chars could be a randomly generated salt and the rest is equal sized blocks of encrypted content. The random salt results in a different encoding each time.

This is what I have so far and it seems to fit the original encoded message too.

The salt is the first 29 chars.

Each encrypted block is 59 chars.

So for the QBFs : 29 + 6x59

For the original message : 29 + 5x59

383 is prime. So it can't be a substitution cipher.

I wish I knew. I'm a python guy.

apparently it's ruby..
vankap··on ScribTeX online LaTeX editor (with git interface)
This would be very useful for those who work on a netbook or a thin client. Besides, people do use Google Docs even though they have a full fledged document editing software on their machines.
vankap··on German Brute Forces SHA1 in 49 Minutes for $2
Switching to one of the SHA-2 hashes should be good enough till SHA-3 is selected.
vankap··on Hacker News India
I got really excited when I saw this on the front page only to realize that this is not an official sub-HN once I read the comments.

This is a good initiative but please call it something else.

vankap··on 8pen version 1.1 is out And the 8pen is now free
In landscape mode, I would prefer to have the swiping area on the right/left side of the screen rather than at the center bottom (I use my dell streak mostly in landscape). It would be easier to reach as I would only be using my thumb for input.

Would be great if this could be made an option in the settings.

vankap··on The 3 Programming Languages you need to Know
No one language can keep me happy for a long time. So my happiness language changes every year.

GTD - Python (Also my happiness language)

Bread and butter - Java (although that might change too given the recent developments)
