viraptor··on OpenSSH 10.6p2 has been released with a workaround for a critical vulnerability
Remotely: An encrypted file with a seed / master passwords to all the other data, published under a public url you can remember, but not linked anywhere and not listed.

Locally: Same, but printed out, laminated, in a safe place with other documents.

viraptor··on Practice speaking Japanese with real YouTube videos, graded line by line
> and therefore in every language

What's different in English? Apart from purely situational stuff ("going shopping with girlfriends" for example), what's specific to the language itself?

viraptor··on A thousand fewer paths to root
Linux has effectively same options and more via LSM. I'm not sure why ACL is mentioned here since it exists on Linux too. What advantage do you mean specifically?
viraptor··on Residential proxies detected on White House network
You can see lots at wigle.net But it's a noise of quite a few meme submissions and lots of useless HP OfficeJet and DIRECTV entries...
viraptor··on Images 2.6
I wonder if there's some weird accounting going on, or if this is real. It would mean around 24M images an hour and that's in the area of "more images than anyone will see". It means there's lots of wasted automated effort in this process somewhere, even if we assume some creators will request 8x variants of their ideas.
viraptor··on BYD doubles its Brazil market share to 9.7% a year after opening its local plant
> from a hostile state that is probably sending data back to China.

In terms of data privacy which state isn't hostile? I'd like an EV which is not connected, but out of available choices, I don't care if it's China or the US or someone else.

I probably even prefer China since they usually collect data but not on a personal level. It feels like the US products say "link to all accounts, tell us everything about you", while the Chinese products are monitoring things in a more generic way.

viraptor··on Synaptics Appears to Use Legal Threats to Block Open-Source DisplayLink Driver
Let me assure you that based on my experience across 3 systems, they don't care about Mac and windows users that much either.
viraptor··on Synaptics Appears to Use Legal Threats to Block Open-Source DisplayLink Driver
This is an utterly confusing and self sabotaging system. I had lots of issues with displaylink on a Mac. (Daily crash on the first video call of the day for some reason) Does the support care? No. Can I debug using the logs? No - THEY'RE ENCRYPTED! And now they're fighting for customers to not be able to use the hardware.

Save yourself time and money - avoid DisplayLink.

At least part of the effort was posted in mailing list though https://lwn.net/Articles/1078474/ - I hope the recent repository has been mirrored too.

There's also https://github.com/durhamaustin9/DisplayLink-Drivers-Reconst... you may want to preserve locally.

viraptor··on Tell HN: Gemini trains on chat history, even for subscribers (personal accounts)
I don't trust any of the providers, but at the same time I think you're reading into the terms too much for wrong reasons. Yes, you have to opt out. But:

> A subset of chats are reviewed by human reviewers

This is expected these days for threads which may make the provider liable. Just look at the recent death case due to bad GPT medication recommendation.

> Chats reviewed by human reviewers [...] are not deleted when you delete your activity. Instead, they are retained for up to three years.

They're being retained for legal purposes.

> Please don’t enter confidential information...

This is so they don't accidentally preserve it for review, but also they don't want you to share private info that the agent will post somewhere without an explicit approval.

Those points make sense for them, regardless what other T&C rules apply.

viraptor··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
Fortunately that's just a matter of weeks until someone revengs and publishes the fix... even if we need to wait a while for a proper upstreamed solution.
viraptor··on Microsoft fixes a Windows 11 annoyance as PC revenue declines
I'm all for artcraft effort to succeed and wish them all the best. But you're overselling this as "Works extremely well as a CC etc. replacemenmt." - it's alpha level software. It's got lots of issues and is not polished yet. Give it some time.

In the meantime, Krita and a few online apps have been around and very successful.

viraptor··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
This is not different from standard SEO. You adjust the page to be more likely to select in the results. That's not the same thing as that LLM providers injecting explicit ads or steering results.
viraptor··on Shrinking NixOS RAM footprint and resource requirements to the bare minimum
I want this for third party apps that are already stuck with electron, not my own.
viraptor··on Katamari Damacy but it's The Met collection
> requires many models for each item based on zoom scale progression

Is there some source for that? It sounds unlikely... And you can see the original models exported here https://katamari.andrew-boylan.com/

Basically if you have models that are already low-poly, why would you need multiple versions for zooming rather than just changing the camera?

viraptor··on Katamari Damacy but it's The Met collection
On Firefox mobile, the controls are way too sensitive. I could barely aim at things. Also the joystick indicator stays in place even though you can press and drag from anywhere.

The loading is extremely slow - I'm not sure I need all the objects loaded before selecting the first level.

Also I'm not sure if some textures didn't load, but the first level is just... almost empty with random things on the floor? It doesn't have any interesting surroundings. https://photos.app.goo.gl/cEnu76hb5JeJ3DhP7 If it's not an artefact of my phone, a Katari clone needs way more polish/scenery.

viraptor··on My Favourite Laptop
There's no laptop that doesn't need spare parts. Even if some model is known for reliability, it doesn't matter when you're suddenly the unlucky one. Or when it drops on the ground and something cracks. Not that I have perfect information, but in a calculation similar to insurance - I'd rather have something a little bit less reliable but with cheaper spares/repair than "perfectly reliable" but needing a full replacement. (Or apple's "we can replace all of the inside or all of the outside")
viraptor··on Shrinking NixOS RAM footprint and resource requirements to the bare minimum
This reminded me I wanted to check how small can I make chrome by disabling all the unnecessary features. I'd really like to get something I can swap in the electron packages to reduce the ram usage. Sometimes it's worth fighting for the resources we pay for.
viraptor··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
> These are both signs of a maturing market.

I wonder when will oil companies reach the point of a maturing market... https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/sep/09/fossil-f...

viraptor··on Cloudflare experiencing multiple active incidents
Yeah, the link should be to https://www.cloudflarestatus.com/history?type=incident

They have an incident of the incident status page...

viraptor··on Paper straws worse for the environment than plastic ones
It looks like the details of the report are not published, but there's a call to do so: http://www.ikld.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=342710
viraptor··on WorkOS reports security breach
At any point, any company and individual is in the state of "We have no evidence that your application data was accessed." I get what you're trying to say, full verification is tricky, and there's nothing wrong with rotating credentials just in case in those situations. But you're implying way more than that and there's no reason for it.
viraptor··on Show HN: Subvocal – Talk to your computer without making noise
It's from Xenocide. It was between Ender and Novinha.
viraptor··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
> Comparing it to the US isn’t really meaningful considering the EV market here is on life support.

I think that's the thing being pointed out...

viraptor··on BYD sold more EVs last month than the US did all quarter
It's really not much different than most cars people use every day. Nothing weird is happening with my seats. (Sealion 7) And I put 40kg+ in the boot without problems either. I've not seen reports of this being a problem overall - maybe you just got very unlucky?

I get not liking something for personal preference reasons, but going as far as garbage and cheap quality in this case just... doesn't match reality. It's a perfectly fine car that works. Lots of people are happy with it.

viraptor··on Polyend releases the Tracker firmware source code
That's not what the message says though. It implies using marketing cookies there, not externally. They could've said "Click to play from YouTube (may involve cookie tracking)" if it's actually for YouTube
viraptor··on Show HN: Subvocal – Talk to your computer without making noise
If I remember the details correctly, the AI-like entity optimised the communication to subvocal, but his wife felt disconnected, noticed him turned away in bed whispering to the AI.

There's some lesson there...

viraptor··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
For a specific service only, not the networks. But that doesn't even matter that much - if you require the attacker to get both into the network and into the device, that's a significant improvement.
viraptor··on Ubuntu still has not released patch for Linux 0day RCE in almost 3 weeks
> about having pointless services listening for no good reason

I think you'll find that for most people, plugging the laptop in and having the network immediately available and automatically seeing their local printer is a pretty good reason.

viraptor··on Polyend releases the Tracker firmware source code
"Click to accept marketing cookies and enable this content" on a video? Have some shame, developers...
viraptor··on WTF Ubuntu?
Don't expect closed source to protect you. LLMs are very happy to analyse binaries and decompile functions you need. It's barely harder to deal with software you don't have the source for. I did both security and reveng work with LLMs and they don't slow down.
