vlan0··on DoorDash to acquire Instacart
>Of all the options for "use money to make this go away so I can focus on the problem" paying $10 surcharge for doordash is by far the cheapest.

Exactly this. They know humans will likely pick the path of least resistance. And we are generally bad at problems that have compounding long term outcomes. They are essentially preying on our societal circumstances. My story: Brain will resist using energy for creative solution from within if external solution exists for $.

>And how many more times do we need to read this before we replace Web PKI with a system that isn't as completely insane?

You say this like it's easy and simple and we are simply not choosing to do so.

vlan0··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Right...but putting everything behind the great firewall doesn't solve the true problem. Which is these devices are shipping with garbage and no accountability. We'll break into your moat if that's what it truly takes, is my point.
vlan0··on Spending on AI is becoming almost impossible for businesses to budget
>It's very difficult to have informed opinions on a black box with an ambiguous, ever-changing and nominally unbounded set of capabilities.

Hah, welcome to what it can feel like to manage people.

vlan0··on Where's the Beef?: The lab-grown-meat revolution that wasn't
Nah, these are the same folks that have never watched earthlings.

If we made it so before one could eat meat of the animal, it had to personally kill and watch the animal die, we’d eat less meat.

It should be a requirement

vlan0··on AI is breaking our proxies for expertise
You are highlighting their point. You are pointing to current culture and behavior. The very first sentence that you responded to points to that culture and says it's gonna need to change, if you'd like to keep your job.

People skills imo will always trump other skills. The best ideas never live because people don't know how to sell. And knowing and being very successful at selling requires that excellent story telling and human coordination.

vlan0··on BGP hijack infecting networks caused by a comedy of errors
How could they? The alternative starts to look like every router maintains complete "internet state"...which turns out isn't possible. Awareness is complex and expensive. And there are endless variables and "whys" to consider

yeah...it's certainly a grounding feeling for me.

Ahh these are fun. They come up often when thinking about consciousness.

vlan0··on US debt has hit $40tn - Will that be a wake-up call?
Not since Clinton in the 90s. Could use another pull back on military spending like we did then
vlan0··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
>What even is a “shared reality”? For example my mum and I could watch the exact same movie and showing at the cinema and still come away with a completely different opinion of it.

Exactly. The shared reality is the experience. You both were given the same opportunity to take in the same information. The different opinion is what comes out of the other side of the meat suit processing the experience.

Algo driven results changes the experience by changing what the user perceives. So there might never be a shared experience.

vlan0··on Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion
It's an interesting balance for a company to strike. Networking in general is one where the defaults are almost always lax. Why? Because the vast majority of support tickets for these companies are from people who don't know what they are doing and don't have a desire to understand. They "just want it to work."

But the people with the actual desire and understanding aren't using the defaults anyway. And the people who don't want to understand will just turn things off and "just get it working."

The only way out of this is extreme accountability and intentional design from person implementing the technology.

vlan0··on 45°C cooling design cuts data center water use to near zero
Mmm yeah...just straight releasing the water isn't ideal. But of course, it's free! And that's what society optimizes for, sadly.
vlan0··on Apple raises prices of MacBooks, iPads
Which is such a capitalist lens to look at things through. Optimizing for a very small window of reality.

It's the same sort of optimization that drives behaviors where corporations feel no need to contribute to open-source projects. The same projects that enabled those very corporations to exist.

vlan0··on 45°C cooling design cuts data center water use to near zero
That's interesting...I don't think I've seen the data to support this
vlan0··on Windows 11 update broke the Recycle Bin, OneDrive, and your PC's stability
And between them and Intel, their code for their wpa supplicant and driver interaction is absolute dog shit in WiFi 7 land.
vlan0··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: switching to a Broadcom SFP+ module
But why...it doesn't solve a problem we currently face. We aren't even anywhere near 10Gbps in RF. And that's assuming you are maxing all three bands.

vlan0··on Why I'm Forced to Say Farewell: Google Management Has Lost Its Moral Compass
>Are YOU working for a non profit?

yes....it was the "least evil" choice

vlan0··on Anthropic apologizes for invisible Claude Fable guardrails
Corporation cannot help but act this way. They are too big. The pressures for profit are all that matters. That is the priority. It doesn't matter what colorful words they put on the paper to make you feel better. Look at the "green" movement 20 years ago. All talk and no action.

Stop supporting organizations that don't put humans first. Don't believe a word that anyone says. Lip service is free

vlan0··on US employers spend more than $1.5B a year to fight labor unions, report finds
It feels like a systems problem. It seems like the same theme that we see in for say, startup to corporate transformation. I think ultimately it comes down to size. They become too big and the power consumes. And they become what they once fought.
vlan0··on Gmail registration now requires scanning a QR code and sending a text message
>Systems are designed for humans, if they fail to account for human nature then they're bad systems.

Systems will always be bad. It's why corporations will always be bad. The complexities are too much for humans. You will never account for all variables. Account for one, with that you are exposed to another. This becomes clear to me when you look at government and the systems it tries to use, since forever. Climate change is another great example. Requires coordinated change across the globe. Many many many factors why that will never change. Change in the system of that size is too hard. So is it the system that is bad, or maybe it's just a reflection of limitations within us as a species, today?

vlan0··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
Nah, nothing wrong with nice things. But if those nice things only exist because someone else on the planet had to suffer....
vlan0··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
This is true up until it isn't. Their security is through obscurity. Being able to deflect the masses. Manipulating the balance, if you will. But they are not special. They are still unprotected sacks of flesh. And we've recently seen just how vulnerable they are. If that desire spread, you will see more.
vlan0··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
That is exactly the type of pacificity that plays into their hand. Life is good and bad at the same time. It is important to hold those two at the same time.
vlan0··on US special forces soldier arrested after allegedly winning $400k on Maduro raid
Exactly this. They live in houses with glass windows. We could take this world any time we choose.

vlan0··on ESP32-S31: Dual-Core RISC-V SoC with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and Advanced HMI
Right, so RF issues will possibly exist on all frequencies. And yet we continue to build devices on the most congested spectrum available.

vlan0··on ESP32-S31: Dual-Core RISC-V SoC with Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4, and Advanced HMI
True for devices under your control. But think venues with large BYOD counts. Add in that all client devices generally transmit at full power. End result is an environment with not a lot of headroom in the 2.4 space.
