vmfunction··on Spotify demonetizes all tracks under 1k streams
All that is listed are what reasonable customer and people would have assumed. However, things in corporate world seems to have the mind of it's own. It is normally in the interest of centralisation in the name of efficiency, and sadly at cost of human productivity and buyer and seller interests.
vmfunction··on Rpgp: Pure Rust implementation of OpenPGP
These are the reasons project such as Wave (By google) and matrix.org are introduced. But E-mail dies hard. As one can see it just keeps on adding new bandages to try to make it work. And most user don't care about security or privacy until it is a mess.
vmfunction··on Why Today's Software Sucks
I get what you are saying. I do agree with the sentiments of the title. With so much increase in CPU speed, why do the software runs about the same and sometimes slower? Many says it is GUI/GPU? Then I would rather be using 256 color terminal screen with cursor support.
vmfunction··on Tips for linking shell companies to their secret owners
>These are great techniques and helpful advice, but note that they are basically of zero use whatsoever in the case of (for instance) a Delaware LLC.

Also it will almost impossible to link WY LLC with proxy ownership. Much of what really matters are hidden being the wall of client attorney privileges.

vmfunction··on No joke: FTC boss goes on the Daily Show and is told Apple tried to block her
There are only 6 corps that controls most of the media outlet. Got hunch that Apple is NOT the only one dropping topics they don't like.

Cliffy is also pretty good: https://cliffy.io

And type safe.

How do we report that. Some issues has come up with aws on esm.sh https://esm.sh/@aws-sdk/client-secrets-manager@3.540.0

It is just not working.

vmfunction··on Bun 1.1
Also with Deno, it become very easy to write typed cli. .ts file can be run as script very easily with permission access defined on top of the script such as:

#!/usr/bin/env -S deno run --allow-net

Then one can just run ./test.ts if the script has +x permission.

Also project such as https://cliffy.io has made writing cli way more enjoyable than node.

It is a good idea to beware of the VC. So it is good idea to support project such as Hono (projects conform to modern web standard, and is runtime agnostic for JS).

vmfunction··on How do MRI Headphones work? (2022)
Well, non-ionizing radiation (NIR) cause cancer has being debated such as this [1]. It wouldn't surprise me that it will be a bit like the Roundup/Monsanto situation. I don't blame people wanting to use these kind of protection just in case.

And iPhone also had this in their Product Information Guide:

"When using iPhone near your body for voice calls or for wireless data transmission over a cellular network, keep iPhone at least 15 mm (5/8 inch) away from the body, and only use carrying cases , belt clips, or holders that do not have metal parts and that maintain at least 15 mm (5/8″) separation between iPhone and the body."

vmfunction··on Computing with JavaScript's Undefined (2020)
as the sibling thread already mentioned. It is pretty much just doing what JSFuck is doing. Before we go all crazy and start transpiling all our JS to this, be aware running code obfuscation like that will have performance penalties.
vmfunction··on Commission opens non-compliance investigations against Alphabet, Apple and Meta
Cookies in 2024 is kinda irrelevant, more important is to prevent fingerprinting of veriest kind (CSS, fonts, GPU, screen size etc).
vmfunction··on Biden administration to forgive $5.8B student debt for 78,000 borrowers
As long as $ is the global reserve currency, these number are pretty much meaningless. Not to say it will be this way forever. We already can see other countries are doing everything they can to trade commodities in their own respective currencies (Russia, India, Japan, etc).

It is actually a great effort to forgive student loans. In US it is one of most debilitating factor for people who went to college (especially the private ones).

Why not do this earlier but wait for an election year? This just looks like a election campaign stunt to me.

vmfunction··on Swept away: $500k sand dune built to protect US homes disappears in days
>The real solution is to accept that anyone who bought in the last half century should have factored in the scientific evidence of climate change and not expect taxpayers to subsidize their failure to plan appropriately.

Glad someone said this. If you got money to buy properties at Martha Vineyard, then how much do you really believe in climate change? People who build there should just accept the risk that their properties will be destroyed with little notice.

vmfunction··on CEO of data privacy company Onerep.com founded dozens of people-search firms
The lesson for the modern ago. Don't put stuff into digital form if you want privacy!

Some places don't allow use of smart phone. They actually ask you check your phone into a coat check type thing at door! One journalist friend often leaves the smart phone at home.

vmfunction··on How Figma's databases team lived to tell the scale
if you have postgres, just use https://github.com/FerretDB/FerretDB
vmfunction··on How Figma's databases team lived to tell the scale
>There is usually not much point in making more than one tablespace per logical file system, since you cannot control the location of individual files within a logical file system. However, PostgreSQL does not enforce any such limitation, and indeed it is not directly aware of the file system boundaries on your system. It just stores files in the directories you tell it to use.

seems like the limitation is the logical file system. Which probably will work for most users.

vmfunction··on School lunch breaks in France can be two hours (2012)
over the years I have read arguments from both sides. It is not healthy to sleep after food! It is healthy to sleep after food.

I just tried it myself.

And it did help a lot to sleep after food. Limiting in take of sugar/carbs does help. However, personally going on diet like this does NOT suite me. I rather eat the food I want to eat and rest a bit, than watch what I need to eat.

vmfunction··on School lunch breaks in France can be two hours (2012)
And in Spain people take siesta. And it makes sense, our body needs rest to digest food. That's why we get food coma. Every one not just children should do this.
vmfunction··on FCC Denies Starlink Low-Orbit Bid for Lower Latency
Whoever solves the orbital debris issue will be more important than Gates, Steve and Musk combined! It is a real issues, and nobody has a properly solution. Before we launch a bunch of tech into space, let's figure out how to do that. So we don't turn or orbit like the landfill here on earth.

vmfunction··on Show HN: Timelock.dev – Send a secret into the future using timelock encryption
>Timelock puzzles and blockchain are imo hacky solutions to one of the most important outstanding problems in cryptography: securely and trustlessly agreeing on elapsed time.

Digital cryptography will always being a cat and mouse. DES, RSA, Elliptic curve... With intro of quantum computing, it will just fasten up the pace. Some government has start experimenting with quantum entanglement (https://apnews.com/article/china-google-justice-department-6...)

It is all about your threat model. Even that I'm sure someday some smart guy will also figure out how to figure out how to beat that.

vmfunction··on European Commission's use of Microsoft 365 infringes data protection law for EU
>The wider problem is that when governments and (non-profit) organizations did create alternatives for Microsoft products, the governments themselves ended up showing they are corrupted and the internal rules quickly changed to stop allowing the competing (open source) offerings.

Not just government, also corporations. How many times, has superior product being ignore because it doesn't have some MS/Google/Oracle (fill in the blank). Current politics in the world does NOT support meritocracy. Doesn't matter if in gov or corporate.

vmfunction··on How the Devteam Conquered the iPhone
>These three fields would be concatenated into a token. The token would be sent to Apple server (albert.apple.com) where it would be signed with Apple's private key. The signed token would then be sent back to the device. A daemon lockdownd, listening over USB verified the token using Apple's public key. With the proof that the token came from Apple, and matching DeviceID, IMEI, and ICCID, lockdownd updated the device state to "Activated". The user then had access to the iPhone homescreen and the apps.

Sounds like the pre-cursor to oAuth now days.

vmfunction··on You cannot simply publicly access private secure links, can you?
Hopefully using POST not GET. The GET links get logged in the HTTP server most of time. Just another great way to store your 'security credential' in plain text. Logs gets zipped and archive. Good luck with any security measure.

These refill packages for dishwasher, printers are just SaaS for products. It is terrible and contain 'dark pattern' to continuously over charge customers. Just also a lazy way to try to make business profitable and doesn't really provide any benefit to the customers.
