warkdarrior··on Why a program doesn't work when run from a batch file, but works when clicked
> I think I could be ok with it, as long as I can query it. Preferable if I have a way to directly interact with it that isn't just moving things around;

`CD` without any arguments will display the current directory on the current drive.

`CD E:` will display the current directory on the `E:` drive.

No state chnages for either case.

> My layman reading of the names: there is one Terra, one Luna and one Sol => "Astra" is singular.

That is incorrect. "Astra" is Latin for "stars" (plural). The singular would be "astrum".

warkdarrior··on Nvidia and Micron Make Up 34% of America's Earnings Boom
The argument works with any service business that is shared by high income and low income earners: restaurants, transportation, clothing, housing, groceries, etc.
warkdarrior··on Microsoft and others tell crypto platform not to tokenize their stocks
> Of course you are carrying some intermediary risk but that's also inherent with stock brokers as well.

Stock broker customers have SIPC to reduce risk. Is there an equivalent entity for the crypto token space?

warkdarrior··on Type Server Protocol

warkdarrior··on Anthropic S-1
I am not going to censor myself because at some future time, in some datacenter, an AI is going to misinterpret my comment.
warkdarrior··on Anthropic S-1
Maybe Anthropic should invest in nukes, to avoid Ukraine's fate.
warkdarrior··on Why Gopher in 2026?
Maybe they are passionate about themselves??
warkdarrior··on DNS: A Replacement for Finger
That's just the braindeqd design of DNS, responding to arbitrary UDP packets without authenticating the IP address of the sender.
warkdarrior··on DNS: A Replacement for Finger
Assuming you have this finger app installed. My Android store does not seem to have one, for example.
warkdarrior··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
My main email is not GMail, but I forward it to a GMail account to get free spam filtering, free backup, and free search. I encourage everyone to do the same.
warkdarrior··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
Giving up (aka cynicism) is easy.
warkdarrior··on Ask HN: If the models are so good, why doesn't OpenAI just start 100 companies?
The only option is to invest in robots with machine guns, to provide security services to the ultrarich.
warkdarrior··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
"It's for security, honey."
warkdarrior··on Today, we hacked what we'd set out to hack: the iPhone
If your phone does not have any important or sensitive on it, why even secure it?
warkdarrior··on Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France
Exactly. Digital IP can be transferred infinitely and cheaply (by copying it) without loss of use. Physical items cannot (yet!?) be transferred infinitely and cheaply without loss of use. Once the item is transferred, the previous holder of the physical item loses use of it.
warkdarrior··on Getting ready to operate GNU Taler in Germany
The announcement claims a "privacy-preserving [...] payment system". Are you saying this would come in conflict with German law?
warkdarrior··on Getting ready to operate GNU Taler in Germany
I haven't looked at Taler in a while. What capabilities do they have to transfer money around without being surveilled? Also are transactions final and irreversible?
warkdarrior··on Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France
> But still, if someone posts a copy of your book or painting online, you can pretty cheaply file a DMCA request that it be taken down, and most large players will comply. If you throw out copyright law altogether, you get rid of that too.

Good, get rid of copyright law! It has only lead to pure rent seeking.

warkdarrior··on Quad9 to exit France
> These corporations are rent seeking monopolists. Like many Japanese companies, Sony is an intellectual property absolutist.

The whole intellectual property space is pure rent seeking. Everybody wants name recognition and/or money whenever some text, code, image, or video they produced is used or remixed. It is pure rent seeking, from FSF to Sony to Metallica.

warkdarrior··on Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France
> I think, usually, in those cases it's that people believe the company did not really do anywhere near everything it could - it did the bare minimum it thought it could get away with then seemed shocked it wasn't enough to matter.

Yes, and Quad9 could have done better in the German court case. At a minimum they could have asked users to register and provide proof of residency, and then could have ensured that their DNS service is offered only to registered users.

warkdarrior··on Oregon lawmakers approve money to buy an iconic waterfall listed on Redfin
This could easily be developed into a resort. Instead the state is getting its grubby hands on it and will probably leave it as an unimproved dirt hole.
warkdarrior··on Patch the Planet: global response coordination as agents uncover vulnerabilities
Maybe programmers should not create so much buggy software. Did you try that?
warkdarrior··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
Philip Morris stock is up 100% over the last 5 years. https://finance.yahoo.com/quote/PM/

Not bad for tobacco company that everybody presumably shuns.

warkdarrior··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
> umm when a thief steals and gets caught, we don't just punish them. We also recover what was stolen. > > They should also be made to delete all user data collected during the period, and pause similar data collection for x months/years even the ones that fall under their service terms. The price of wrong doing should be high, and for meta deleting historical user data is the highest form of punishment .

How was the data stolen from users? Do the users no longer have access to their own data? Was it deleted from their devices?

warkdarrior··on Overview of the German AfD email leak
The privacy you’re concerned about is largely an illusion. All you have to give up is your illusions, not any of your privacy.
warkdarrior··on PHP 8.2.35
So if Wiz produced their own patch to PHP, and Calif produced their own (slightly different) patch, and OpenAI produced their own, which version should I use, as a user of PHP? Should I manually merge them? Is Calif's better than Wiz's? Is OpenAI's better than Calif's? Are they complementary?
warkdarrior··on PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP
The fix is out. How much longer should they wait? 5 minutes after fix release? 5 days? 5 months?
warkdarrior··on Google Cloud outage affects almost all banking and other operations in Europe
Agreed. Just like in the old days, when banks cut down their own trees to make their own paper for their ledgers.
warkdarrior··on What shall I teach my son?
> What the hell does “demand better” even mean here?

Probably asking for $5000 checks from the government.
