watwut··on America's economy is becoming zero-sum
> people, paid employment simply doesn't look like a viable way to earn a living anymore, so they feel the need to play high-risk, high-reward games in the first place.

The odds are such that they loose. Gamblers end up with less money. These people are addicts solving their emotional problem at high financial cost and debt.

> suddenly betting on a game that pays double or nothing doesn't seem so irrational anymore.

It is as irrational as in any other situation. And odds are not double or nothing. That would simply made betting pointless

watwut··on Anthropic IPO buyers see valuation as low as $1.1T
Is stable employment is not an option, their businesses will fail for the exact same reasons.
watwut··on Why tradwives are fleeing the movement: I can't undo my past
Tradwifes are equivalent of fundamentalist muslims who believe in female submission. I literally read articles about violence in that community.

Muslims in general would be equivalent of christians in general. The article is not about christians in general, but about tradwifes.

YOU want to frame the situation as just an aesthetic choice. Or "having kids" choice, as if having kids necessitated submission to husband.

watwut··on Why tradwives are fleeing the movement: I can't undo my past
> and didn't write an article about women who felt they were abused in some other type of lifestyle.

That is absurd claim. Yes, guardian (and generally liberal or progressive media) have articles about domestic violence or abuse in other groups.

The claim is not that this is the only place where it happens. But, believes of this subculture ensure it will happen and members will support the abuse.

watwut··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
And in this iteration, they murdered, intentionally and proudly abused, treated whole cities as occupied territories, lied to courts, beated citizens (and murdered them) ....

... while republican party and administration openly supported it.

watwut··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Yes they are and even openly so.
watwut··on Why tradwives are fleeing the movement: I can't undo my past
Literally all the women in the article were abused, beaten and consider it a mistake. (None expressed regret about trying to get other women into the same situation. Some regret they taught their kids it is normal.)

Are you unaware or trying to whitewash? Trying to blame liberals while trying to distract from what non-liberals are?

watwut··on Why tradwives are fleeing the movement: I can't undo my past
> cottagecore, homesteader

Does not imply tradwife. Tradwife has submission as unambigous part.

But also, the article is all about tradwifes influencers who were presenting beautiful life while being abused, controlled and part of religious cult. And in some cases white supremacists.

And THAT or risk of that was also primary criticism all along. Except critics talked about it as "risk" or "likelihood" rather then "you are actually lying about your reality".

watwut··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
No he was not. Progressive left noticed who he is first, long before that point.

And positive first reactions to that car came only from Musk fans bubble. I was seeing people calling it ugly from basically a day 1.

watwut··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Bullshit. Like, you are just straight lying in both of your sentences.

We see what modern republican party does - literally last two years.

watwut··on Can Democrats effectively abolish Electoral College after midterm wins?
America does not have well balanced system. It has deeply flawed and dysfunctional system that failed. Democrats winning does not prove the system to be functional or good.

And supreme court is thoroughly politicized. It needs reform, because it is one of reasons for the dysfunction, for the lack of accountability and for the creation of imperial presidency.

watwut··on US Democrats Win Enough Seats Nationwide to End Presidential Electoral College
> That'll involve pissing off the progressives, since bipartisan bills will necessarily be moderate. But don't let perfect be the enemy of the good.

Only possible bipartisan bill are far right ones. It does not matter how much democrats move to the right, right wing demand right wing radicalism. Left was never the blocker of the bipartisan bills. Conservatives always were.

watwut··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
And my point was that "no he was not lucky, it was entirely fair with no luck or advantage (and no fraud, lies etc)" narrative is frequently motivated reasoning too.
watwut··on Why tradwives are fleeing the movement: I can't undo my past
> meaningful things were raising kids and gardening instead of yoga, matcha brunches and ayuhuasca retreats it got conservative-coded instead of liberal-coded along culture lines.

You are being disingenuous here. The primary and most important thing it did, was religion driven complete submission to husband and complete dependence on him.

> who are reclaiming aspects of femininity which have been stigmatized,

Which would primary be that submission and dependence part. Not gardening vs yoga, plenty of progressives have gardens and don't do yoga. Also, having kids is not stigmatized.

> but because it has a veneer of similarity to pre-feminist norms

If he beats you, it is your fault for not being obedient enough is definitely pre-feminist norm. Which is part and parcel of the culture these women embraced and are from.

watwut··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
> People intuitively like the idea of reducing inequality and hate the idea that the fact they make less money than the other guy might be entirely rational.

It goes other way round too. It might just be that the your higher salary is not rational, you got lucky or got unfair advantage.

Like, in the bottom of your comment, you made up situation that might just not apply. Or might just not counteract anything

Or, might be directly damaging - agreeing with everyone makes you popular, but causes a lot of damage in the long term. Lying about important stuff makes you popular, but causes damage to company and everyone else.

People go out of their way to rationalize and defend unfair or damaging systems.

watwut··on An Underrated Reason Boys Aren't Reading
So, boy characters are endangered species except super easy to find in any bookstore. And what makes them endangered is 2-1 ration among main characters ... which suggests they are pretty common.

Also kids dont like older books as much, ok, so maybe dont give them new ones. It is not like adventure books were rare still.

And yes, youtube, netflix and videogames are more fun. We cant change that.

watwut··on I wish tech companies knew more about me
> My user account, system locale, browser locale, and keyboard settings are all set to English. I am logged into Chrome and all Google services. I travel to Germany every few months, and lots of services that I've been using for years suddenly decide I speak German.

This does not require more tracking. This requires LESS tracking - just show the language explicitly requested by the user.

> Netflix on Apple TV asks me to select a user every time I launch it. I've had this account for 15+ years, and never had more than one user on it. I always select the only option there is to select. There is no setting to disable this screen.

This does not require more tracking. Just dont show the screen if there is only one user.

watwut··on North Korean fake job interview led to $6.3B Binance heist
If you spend a lot of time in work working on laptop, you might just plain not need one at home. It is not necessary for entertainment, sport, cooking, whatever. You do not need it to learn new things. Plus, some people have desktops or console for gaming.

And if you are coding full time, it is better to not do coding in your free time if you want to maximize learning anyway.

watwut··on Basically no one is using AI agents for their DoorDash orders
> AI or not, ordering any food delivered takes time to deal with and collect.

It is few taps in an app and going out for it when it arrives. Literally. And while you are at work anyway. Cooking, shopping and packing take more time - and at the time when you could have been doing something more pleasurable (like chilling with netflix).

watwut··on Study estimates 75% of NFL players who died over 15-year span had CTE
They are not furthering the human race. They are literally the kind of people human race would be better off without.
watwut··on Guerrilla bike lanes: San Francisco makes illicit infrastructure permanent (2016)
They cross at red. I have seen that.
watwut··on Frustrated ranchers want people to quit 'rescuing' their working guardian dogs
I would not bother 3rd time.
watwut··on Education shouldn't be held for ransom
To me, it sounds like you are intentionally obtuse here. They know what they want, you know what they want, but you are playing gotcha with them.
watwut··on Guerrilla bike lanes: San Francisco makes illicit infrastructure permanent (2016)
Downvoted, but true. If there is no crosswalk, you can cross. But, it might be dangerous or impossible as cars have right of way.
watwut··on Why Don't We Live in an Art Nouveau World?
That has absolutely nothing to with what I wrote. I was not writing about history of 400 or 500 years ago nor about people with unlimited budget and building spanning 150 years from start to finish.

I was talking about what architect as a job means today. There are two branches and the technical one exists, because it is needed and useful.

It has nothing to do with culture bullshit, diminished skills and all that, frankly, crap. And if you want experimental architecture and arts, there are plenty of those too. It is just that this guys friend is not that arts guy.

watwut··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
They are not bringing in jobs. They employ very few people.
watwut··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
Generally, economic activity is supposed to raise living standards. AI promisses to a.) speed up climate change b.) facilitate surveillance and authoritarian tech bros b.) make people obsolete and unemployable c.) kill us all because reasons.

Datacenter is not bringing more economic activity to the area.

watwut··on Guerrilla bike lanes: San Francisco makes illicit infrastructure permanent (2016)
The same person is a driver, biker or pedestrial at different times of the same day.

Toxic entitled drivers hate bikers. Some bikers are toxic on sidewalks. Most sane people are actually able to exist with all three.

> Bikes don't belong on the road with cars and they dont belong on sidewalks with pedestrians and they don't belong in between.

Bikes belong both on road and in between. Childrens bikes belong on side walk. Bikes moving in small speed can be on sidewalks too.

watwut··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
"algorithms and social media incentive systems" are run by the same group of people and are crap for exact same reasons.

But also no, the crap AI is causing goes waay beyond algorithms and social media. It is ok to blame it.

watwut··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
"Inevitable" means "same technological progress would be achieved anyway, even if these people have made less damaging choices".

So yes, they are 100% responsible for damage they caused and did not had to happen. And no, "I had no choice, because it was the only way to become billionaire" is not an excuse.

They were NOT "instrument". No one manipulated them. No one forced them. Nothing forced them. They themselves wanted to and did not cared
