wavefunction··on Outdoor cats are using $500 Starlink satellite dishes as self-heating beds
Crocuses in chipmunk territory sounds like the exposition of some sort of dystopian future but it's now!
wavefunction··on Peter Thiel hires disgraced ex-Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz
It's more of a death penalty for engaging in homosexual acts. As long as he stays out of Saudi embassies he should be fine, for whatever level of "actively courting investment from the people who would supposedly kill him that kill critics and imprison women for driving" is fine.
wavefunction··on Peter Thiel hires disgraced ex-Austrian chancellor Sebastian Kurz
I can't speak to whether he's been ostracized for rejecting the tenets of Bay Area progressivism but he has expressed extreme political stances that lead people of all kinds to question his character. For example Thiel has expressed his desire that the right of women to vote be revoked.

Disenfranchising adult women's right to vote on the basis of their gender is an attack on fundamental human rights.

That setting is exactly the sort of reason I'm locked in a war to block ads from Google and others. What good is an escapable sandbox, other than for Google?

wavefunction··on The Universe Is Expanding Faster Than It Should Be
The speed of light differs depending on the medium it's transiting already though. I've wondered in the past if in the primordial universe time or space were different than what we've observed "now." It seems like they could both compress or expand like other physical characteristics of reality.
wavefunction··on Harvard won’t require SAT or ACT through 2026 as test-optional push grows
Harvard as some sort of historical meritocracy? I really can't agree.
wavefunction··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment
As you've described yourself, you're more of a shallow cliche of Americans and one that doesn't necessarily reflect well on the rest of us. You're as real an American as the rest of us, and no more.
wavefunction··on President Daniels responds to Chinese student's harassment

wavefunction··on India defuses its population bomb: fertility falls to two children per woman
Well I agree that those work as well. I am afraid your post is too pithy about "does not work" to credit that bit though.
wavefunction··on India defuses its population bomb: fertility falls to two children per woman
My "modest proposal" for humane population reduction is: every individual is born with the right to have one child. A couple then, can have two children, which is below the natural replacement rate of 2.1 leading to a gradual reduction in human population naturally. People who don't want to have kids or can't for whatever reason could sell their right to others who want to have more than their normal allotment while maintaining the lower-than-natural replacement rate. There are other complexities that would need to be considered and managed but it seems to me to be the most ethical way to reduce population, if that is desired.
wavefunction··on JFK Assassination Records – 2021 Additional Documents Release
I assume all the times I've watched it, it's been from video format. I really doubt they were playing the 8mm every time live and broadcasting. So... I guess it's now a video and not film.
wavefunction··on To regrow forests the U.S. needs billions of seeds–and many more 'seed hunters'
Trees are supposed to burn but in patches and not en masse due to previous fires in adjoining areas. This is especially true in the area you left. The natural state of the area should be a variety of forest in different levels of maturity which helps contain the fires that do occur in the most mature and overgrown areas. The less mature forest or previous burn scars act as natural fire breaks.
wavefunction··on Courts block two Biden administration Covid vaccine mandates
The 95% efficacy claim was the result of a scientific study of the efficacy of the vaccine against COVID infection. It was definitely not a lie unless you are an insane person with an outrageous definition of what a "lie" is.
wavefunction··on Piracy release group EVO ‘blames’ movie industry for its popularity
Disney is one of the two media companies my friend is always willing to pirate from due to how they constantly try to rip off the creative talent that is the only reason they're a company. He's one of those types that still pays for and downloads FLACs and has no problem paying for streaming services that are fairly priced and treat their creative resources better than Disney does. I guess it's kind of weird to associate a moral impulse with the act of media piracy but no one says that humans aren't complicated messes of competing paradoxical impulses.
wavefunction··on How I got wealthy without working too hard
Life has whatever purpose you give to it. That's it.
wavefunction··on Chan Zuckerberg Initiative sunsetting science research platform meta.org
I'd prefer "deprecated" which is what the teams I've worked on used. That's an actual programming term as a bonus.
wavefunction··on Chan Zuckerberg Initiative sunsetting science research platform meta.org
Presumably the owner of the Instagram handle was not interested in selling it. I suppose Zuckerberg could have seized it but that's a heck of a way to get your rebranding effort going.
wavefunction··on Julian Assange Extradition Appeal: Day 2
I guess I would consider that an opinion --though of course rationally it makes sense-- without evidence that the UK officials who agreed to the treaty were intimidated into signing it due to a fear of violence (actual or financial or...) towards the UK from the US. My opinion is that the sort of people who signed the 2003 treaty were not particularly concerned about preserving civil rights for British citizens, and the 2003 treaty did normalize evidentiary standards between the two countries that had been lopsided in the UK's favor since 1870.
wavefunction··on Julian Assange Extradition Appeal: Day 2
The 1st Amendment is a moot point as Assange is not being sought for "speech" he has made but for criminal conspiracy and providing material support in furtherance of a crime. The US Constitution does apply to anyone the US Federal Government interacts in my opinion, as it is a definition and limitation of the powers of the US Federal Government. I know it hasn't been applied in practice many times and there are Americans who disagree with this stance but they're wrong just like some people were wrong about slavery.
wavefunction··on Julian Assange Extradition Appeal: Day 2
It's more that the UK and US have an extradition treaty and as long as the request meets the terms of the treaty then the extradition will proceed, barring some sort of domestic political issue. It's not like the US is threatening to attack the UK if Assange is not handed over.
wavefunction··on Adapt or Abandon? Hard Choices in the Himalayas
All the continents are being "hit" by climate change already. People are already relocating due to conflicts and poverty driven by droughts and changing climates disrupting traditional lifestyles. Flooding, forest fires, hurricanes of greater intensity, droughts with no end-in-sight and none of it limited just to the coastal regions of popular media analysis. It's time to stop talking about this as something that will happen in the future and acknowledge it's already happening and change our behavior accordingly.
wavefunction··on What caused all the supply chain bottlenecks?
>The point is that Amazon wouldn't have achieved what it has

Sounds good to me.

wavefunction··on My interview with Steven Levy re. leaking of my Facebook Goodbye post
> her suggestions really do not align with what the tech community wants at all.

Speak for yourself. Facebook has become a threat to my country's democracy and stability and has enabled all sorts of horrific violence. If Facebook could be trusted to do the right thing I would feel differently but they've shown time and again they don't have the capacity or will to do so. "Move fast and break things" apparently applies to everything Facebook touches and so they should be regulated and controlled like a toddler.

wavefunction··on Vinyl records are now outselling CDs
I think it's just that CDs were the preferred format for mass consumption over tapes, previously before tapes 4-tracks and back to vinyl when vinyl was the only option. Now streaming serves the purposes of most people for casual listening while vinyl represents what it always has to the niche.
wavefunction··on Benjamin Button Reviews The New MacBook Pro (2016)
A virtual machine here or there for your spreadsheet and email apps and it really starts adding up.
wavefunction··on Drone operator will try to rescue dogs from Spanish volcano
Didn't public opinion swing against Elon Musk for trying to insert himself into an already on-going rescue and then called one of the men who did rescue the kids a 'pedo-guy'? That's something I'd expect from a 13 year old on xbox live.
wavefunction··on Intellectuals urge Germany to keep nuclear plants online
Why is nuclear considered in contrast to solar and wind? Nuclear energy will allow humanity to move off of petrochemical energy sources much more quickly and given the looming ecological catastrophe the costs of nuclear energy are very reasonable.
wavefunction··on Sony to join TSMC on new $7B chip plant in Japan
China must obviously gain cutting edge node fabs or associated knowledge and processes from seizing Taiwan given the claims you've made about Taiwanese being prevented from being hired by the Chinese Government.
wavefunction··on Sony to join TSMC on new $7B chip plant in Japan
Somebody needs to build cutting-edge node fabs given the rhetoric from China in the past few days regarding forced "reunification" with China.
