weberer··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Yeah, the batteries are for wind. There are some days when the wind barely blows at all. That's when electricity prices really spike.

Finland's power grid stats are open to the public. You can click the month view to see how the different power sources fluctuate.

https://www.fingrid.fi/en/electricity-market/power-system/

Also fun fact: a lot of solar panels in Finland are mounted vertically to walls rather than rooftops. That's because we're so far north that the sun just hangs around the horizon rather than going directly overhead. You end up catching more sunlight pointing directly south.

weberer··on US Wages Share of GDI at 75 Year Low
I don't think you understand the graph. This is what percentage of income comes from wages. So for every dollar that people earned as income on their tax sheet, 42% was listed as coming from wages. The other 58% comes from other sources like non-wage employer compensation, rental income, private business income, etc.

You can see the breakdown of the categories here:

Independent in the sense that they're not part of the corporate media.
weberer··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
>I don't know about anything about open drug markets

Search "Kensington, Philadelphia" on Youtube. Its pretty crazy.

weberer··on Woman faces six years in prison over Cash App account she never opened
New Hampshire is pretty great. That may be due to them having some of the lowest crime rates in the country to begin with.
weberer··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
>The DA (District Attorney) is elected, so they love to cite their tough-on-crime statistics.

Its the opposite nowadays. The current meta is to advertise yourself as light on crime. So you get to the point where Philadelphia has an open-air drug market filled with fentanyl, the DA was actually impeached for dereliction of duty by the Pennsylvania house of representatives, and Philadelphians STILL re-elected him with over 75% of the vote.

weberer··on Jailbreaking the Switch 2
They don't brick consoles. They just ban the console from online play.
weberer··on How abliterated models can get you pwned
>unaligned behavior

The problem is that it is aligned behavior. The aligners in this case are just malicious.

weberer··on Florida's HOAs and condo associations are making the housing crisis worse
The party who foreclosed the house and is currently selling it. Who else could it be?
weberer··on Florida's HOAs and condo associations are making the housing crisis worse
>Is Florida the worst state for HOA foreclosures?

>Florida ranks 1st of the states on HOA Spy for foreclosure suits brought by associations, with 10,296 of 14,168. The count depends on which courts are indexed in each state as well as on the associations, so it is a count of records, not a rate.

Florida is known for having the strongest "sunshine" laws in the country, that make government records transparent. That makes this statistic pretty useless.

weberer··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
What's the point of normalizing per capita for the destination country?
weberer··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
Its actually down slightly from its peak in 2024 according to the article.
weberer··on Seized server Autistici/Inventati (A/I) in Amsterdam for U.S. authorities
Why bring the EU and "European laws" into this when talking about sovereignty? This was a decision by the Netherlands. We should be talking about Dutch laws.
weberer··on Linus Torvalds's first LLM-assisted patch series
Its just inertia of people refusing to update their priors. Two years ago, most LLMs were producing absolute garbage. Even the 70b Llama 3 model would produce nonsense that wouldn't compile, make up completely imaginary API endpoints, and fail to write basic syntax. Then a year ago with Sonnet 4, we actually had something that actually worked, but needed a lot of hand holding for complex tasks. Today, they can be run with minimal supervision. By this time next year, we're going to see the hockey-stick part of the singularity really take off.
weberer··on Amazon pushes up prices across the Internet
Its also heavily region dependent. You can order something on Amazon.com at 10am and have it delivered by 5pm sometimes. When ordering from Amazon.de, it often takes a week just for the product to dispatch, then it takes another week for it to travel from their one warehouse in Poland to Helsinki.
weberer··on Fingerprints are the new cookies
It died because companies had no incentive to respect it. The writers of the GDPR could have easily added a single line saying you had to respect the DNT header, but they chose not to.
weberer··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
Interesting, apparently they added that as a feature a few months ago.

weberer··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I have a server that's now my Claude Code development machine, as well as a host server for the various tools I develop. Its only accessible over my tailnet.

I uninstalled Claude Code from my laptop after an incident where it got stuck on an issue and started scanning my home folder for resources. Its unacceptable and scary behavior, so now it gets it own machine where it can't touch my keys.

weberer··on Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 to Navanethem Pillay

When has this ever happened? You might be referring to Maduro's extradition, but that was due to him being charged with smuggling mass amounts of cocaine into the USA.

weberer··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
.webm is a video standard. Its completely different than webp
weberer··on Shipping JPEG XL in Chrome
>JPEG-XL is not particularly patent-laden and its license is correct for the use-case.

The same could be said for .webm, but Apple refused to support it because they wanted to patent-laden alternative to thrive.

weberer··on Texas city demands $2M for public records on Flock usage
>for being the don't tread on me capital

That would be New Hampshire. Their state motto is even "Live Free or Die"

weberer··on We are going to kill "unalive"
But what are those censorship-resistant alternatives? From the top of my head I can only think of:

- 4chan

- Kiwi Farms

- Maybe modern Twitter? (I don't believe this, but that's the current narrative anyway)

weberer··on What is going on with ceiling fans
>I don't really get the anti-AC fetish in some parts of Europe

It's mostly just bitter renters. Floor units suck, and you can't get the awesome window units that people in America have, because vertical sliding windows are uncommon. If you own your own property, the best investment you can get would be a mini-split AC/heat pump. Not only does it cool you in summer, but it provides very cheap heating in the winter.

weberer··on What is going on with ceiling fans
I've never seen a ceiling fan that didn't also have a fixture.
weberer··on Why the Bronze Age Collapsed

weberer··on Solving Factorio Quality
You only need to mine legendary coal and calcite. Then you can get most of the non-planet specific items from there.

legendary coal -> plastic - > low density structures.

Coal is the only solid ingredient needed in this whole chain. Then that can be recycled to make legendary copper and steel.

legendary calcite -> stone (lava to molten copper recipe) -> concrete

Then that concrete can be recycled to make legendary iron ore.

weberer··on Solving Factorio Quality
Yeah, they announced the space casino removal in one of their Friday blog posts.

weberer··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Maybe you're operating at a higher price bracket, but in Finland 10 euro bottles of Barefoot are pretty popular.

When I was in college, that's also what I told my parents.
