wexq··on Show HN: Piano Trainer – Learn piano scales, chords and more using MIDI
Man, this looks great!

A fortuitous thing for me as well, as I've been starting to look for a trainer like this just know?

Been playing the guitar for a long time for now and I know my basic theory... but give me a keyboard I takes me a while to figure out my scales, chords, progressions and so on. Now that I've some time to get back to music... and sitting in front of a DAW oftentimes a keyboard is what I got.

So it was an instabuy for me (via itch.io), thank you and I'll follow the github repo as well to keep me up to date.

So then, what are you suggesting?

Science bad, Education bad, then what is good?

wexq··on Ask HN: If we create a new country with blockchain, what would it look like?
A clusterfuck.

Basic infrastructure don't arise from a couple of smart contracts you know? Just look up everybody who's tried.

wexq··on Ask HN: Is This Depression?
It could, or it could not.

It also could be boredom, bad diet, too much or too little exercise, lack of sleep, overexhaustion, underlying medical condition, or just a phase and so on.

These questions can't be answered by: me, yourself or a random stranger on the net.

Seriously, see a medical professional. I'm speaking from experience here.

A bad analogy (and I'm not being snarky) would be: "I've got a headache, have I got brain cancer?"

wexq··on Ask HN: What do you recommend to learn touch typing?
Well, I can only say things that helped me.

I'd have fun with a game, namely Typing of the Dead, and then I'd invest into a keyboard with no labels, say a Das Keyboard Ultimate (https://www.daskeyboard.com/daskeyboard-4-ultimate/).

This way your muscle memory will pick up, and you'll lose the habit at looking at the keyboard since there's nothing there.

Will take some time for sure, but nothing in this life is free.

wexq··on Ask HN: Is the ternary computer used in products?
To my knowledge the only recent project using ternary was the cryptocurrency/token IOTA, but even they dropped it.

I don't think there would be any gain from ternary unless the hardware was using trits as well. But all of our computing hardware is binary at the moment.

Measles, Mumps, Rubella, Tetanus, Polio, and now Coronavirus thank you for your service.

At what point does a vaccine stop being experimental?

I mean, we've got plenty of proof that they work.

wexq··on Ask HN: Best Windows file search tool?
Yeah, Everything is fantastic.

I've mapped Win+Alt+Space to activate Everything (Settings > Keyboard), then set "Clear Window on Execute" (Settings > General) to on.

Now a simple keypress gets me search, I can quickly navigate using cursor keys and on selection it closes the search window.

If I'm looking for something fancier I can use the keyboard shortcut, then Ctrl+R to enable Regex search and so on.

Fast and simple.

wexq··on Ask HN: Best Windows file search tool?
"Everything", https://www.voidtools.com

Fast indexing, instant search, does regex and other advanced searches.

For file managers, maybe Total Commander or One Commander.

wexq··on NASA reports trouble with Hubble Space Telescope
Oh man... let's hope it's fixable.

I know the Webb is going to be out there soon, but a) it's not out there yet b) I think NASA could still squeeze a hell of a lot of mileage out of Hubble.

I'm not one for pre-emptive eulogies but I want to say a massive "thank you" to the Hubble project so far.

wexq··on Happy 20th Birthday, iPod
"No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame."
wexq··on Ask HN: What short domains do you ping to check a network connection?
Cloudflare, that is 1.1.1.1 or one.one.one.one if DNS lookup is needed.
wexq··on Ask HN: Where to Start with Stoicism?
Well, the book is a proper tome, but the section on Stoics is very concise (as is rest of the book, really), so I'd go for "A History of Western Philosophy" by Bertrand Russell.

The book also gives a good context on where Stoicism arose, so it might be worthwhile to skim the sections before, though there's no need to get too deep with, say, Aristotle's metaphysics.

It's on archive.org: https://archive.org/details/westernphilosoph035502mbp/page/n...

Why people are not ordering?

The people who care already have one, or they've taped over it anyway. The rest don't probably care.

wexq··on How Lucky Is Too Lucky in Minecraft?
The article recommends watching the video by Matt Parker, and so do I. Great refresher on probability (or luck, if you will)

You've had an easy computing life if that's the worst you had to deal with.

But it's not like there are no alternatives, say, PathFinder.

Kind of like people used to say, "Internet Explorer is only good for downloading FireFox."

wexq··on Ask HN: What IRC client do you use?
I've used irssi (https://irssi.org) for years.

Have a session running on a shell host under tmux. Works perfectly for me on a desktop and a mobile ssh client.

wexq··on Stack on a Budget – A collection of services with free tiers
FWIW, I've not had any spam whatsoever from them.
wexq··on Python vs Common Lisp, workflow and ecosystem (2019)
Not really, the basic Python install has a lot of things ready to use without any external libraries.
wexq··on Stack on a Budget – A collection of services with free tiers
It's missing Oracle Cloud's free tier.

Now, I don't like Oracle, their goings about with Java or their database (fortunately currently I don't have to maintain any of those), but their always free tier is solid, and I'd rank it as the best among free offerings.

I made an issue for it's inclusion, but for those who want a decent free cloud service, do check it out https://www.oracle.com/cloud/free/

You get 2 VMs with 1GB RAM, 2 Block Volumes for 100GB total, 10GB Object Storage, 10GB Archive Storage, 2 Virtual Oracle Databases (20GB) , Load balancer, 10TB outbound traffic/month and 10TB outbound bandwidth

wexq··on Python vs Common Lisp, workflow and ecosystem (2019)
I'm not a particularly experienced or good Lisp programmer, I can customize Emacs, but that's pretty much it.

However, I think this article is a bit skewed and not highlighting things Python has.

For instance, the standard library means that Python is more usable out of the box.

Also when you've got things like iPython or Jupyter it means you can get off the ground easily.

So, in the end, they're two different languages, and I do not think either is better of the two. Right tool for the job and all that.

wexq··on Audacity Aquired by Muse Group
Agreed here.

And also the attitude of "works for me" really pushes usability people out.

wexq··on Audacity Aquired by Muse Group
OSS needs more UI/UX people, and I think Tantacrul is fantastic for this.

His twitter (https://twitter.com/Tantacrul) and youtube (https://www.youtube.com/user/martinthekearykid) are full of interesting tidbits, an you can tell he's passionate about things.

Even if you don't do music/notation his video on Sibelius, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKx1wnXClcI , is ridiculously funny, but also on point.

wexq··on Ask HN: Who is your VPN provider, and why?
I've been using Mullvad as well for the last year or so.

No problems here. Alongside the OpenVPN configs you can get WireGuard as well.

wexq··on A curated list of Music DSP and audio programming resources
An aside, but just recently I tried to get RTAudio off the ground for some low-latency hobby projects.

In the end I switched to PortAudio which works fine with low-latency backends.
