whatch··on The data model behind Notion's flexibility (2021)
Were there substantial changes to the data model? Especially in terms of how child ordering works

Related question: if there were no changes, for instance, because it is too costly to change it now, would you choose a different model for this now?

whatch··on The Perfect Laptop
> I feel like it regularly gets in the way of typing

I understand that everyone's experience can be different. But wow I just noticed that my palms are so often on the touchpad while I'm typing and I have never ever had any problem with that.

Also I usually use my thumb to move cursor and click while other fingers stay on the keys and I cannot remember when it didn't behave according to my intentions. Especially considering the bigger contact area between a thumb and touchpad compared to other fingers.

I just checked edge cases and it works very reliably. Cursor doesn't move if I use my palm. It does move if palm is on the touchpad and I use my thumb. It does move as expected if I move both thumb and palm over touchpad synchronously. It follows the thumb as expected if I move both my thumb and palm in different directions.

I remember my first touchpad on macbook air 13 from 2011. It felt so much better than anything I tried before. But at that time it was physical and it had dead zone at the top of the touchpad. And it was smaller. Today's touchpad macbook pro touchpad is an engineering marvel.

whatch··on Launch HN: Type (YC W23) – AI-powered document editor
Didn't try it, but isn't it how Grammarly works? Just an addon for any input field
whatch··on Launch HN: Type (YC W23) – AI-powered document editor
You probably don't need python and P(ostgres?)SQL too?
whatch··on Launch HN: Type (YC W23) – AI-powered document editor
I was afraid of that too.

But then I remembered that I had already stopped reading some common Google search results because they seemed too low effort for a very long time. And they often looked like they were generated, not written. Just three examples from different fields: Quora, CNN, and CNET. But the list is much longer. In non-English parts of the Internet, there is also poorly auto-translated content from websites like Stack Overflow, which is weirdly high in the Google results. Fortunately, I found extensions to block these websites in Google search. So for me, and I believe for many people, it has already happened.

On the other hand, I enjoy reading articles from Simon Willison and Adam Johnson. And even though now we have very powerful chatbot services that can explain anything to you or effectively teach you some skill, I will most likely continue to read the content that they put on their blogs or elsewhere.

Reputation did matter, and it will matter even more in the future. I believe people will continue to read other people's texts. At least I will.

whatch··on Is hand coding becoming obsolete?
Some of them, yes. But I believe there are still enough problems in the front-end difficult for LLMs in larger applications.

I like the summary regarding front-end here [0].

As someone who just felt the urge to re-/read a lot of science fiction recently, I would really appreciate it if you added a spoiler alert
whatch··on Show HN: Apple Notes Liberator – Extract Notes.app Data and Save It as JSON
"Unblock" is the perfect term for the effect of all these GPT things on me. Thank you for coining that!

Recently I wanted to have something like that but for Safari Reading list. The main difference is I tried to find a solution not for one time liberation, but for continuous 2-way exchange with some web service. It appears you HAVE to run everything locally for that. I like "privacy", but I like having options even more.

By the way it was ChatGPT that helped me to remove this several month old item from my TODO list.

whatch··on LastPass breach gets worse
Surprisingly, Apple built-in password manager. They have Chrome extension for windows (but not for Mac OS Chrome, unfortunately)
whatch··on Show HN: I “wrote” a kid's book with ChatGPT and Midjourney
Your https://storynoworky.ai unfortunately :(
whatch··on How Apple names things
"Play" is my favorite example. Even after a lot of years of using it I still cannot remember what is the current name for their "App Store" when I need to tell someone to look for some app there.
whatch··on Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch
It's always Electron apps come up when someone mentions that we have too many resources :)

whatch··on macOS screenshot tricks to impress your co-workers
Amazing tool. And the best FOSS app I ever used on Ubuntu.
whatch··on macOS 12.3: The Magic of Universal Control and More
Just tried it and it works really amazing.

In the past I used Logitech mouse and keyboard that both support fast switching between 3 devices. And it was not as convenient as this.

Although, I was not able to place it as precisely as when I used iPad as an external display. But I hope they will fix that. I have really weird T-shape monitor setup and would like to put an iPad in the left bottom corner.

whatch··on Why I will never buy another Samsung device
Lenovo delivered a replacement charger for my entry-level ThinkPad really fast (it was the next day I believe). And for free, after a couple of questions on the phone.
whatch··on Spotify sees spike in traffic to cancellation page: 196% week-on-week
Exactly. I just switched back from Apple Music to Spotify (I used Spotify before Apple Music, when podcasts were unavailable where I live).

I returned for missed recommendations. But now with all these podcasts issues I am really thinking about using mp3s again.

whatch··on Every M1 Mac is due for a 2022 refresh with faster M2 chip, new designs
Just purchase something that's already "outdated". Did this with iphone 11 and macbook pro m1 last year. No regrets, no anxiety.
whatch··on Every M1 Mac is due for a 2022 refresh with faster M2 chip, new designs
I thought that the previous one was the best
whatch··on Every M1 Mac is due for a 2022 refresh with faster M2 chip, new designs
Right, m1 supports up to 2 displays, including built-in one.
whatch··on Every M1 Mac is due for a 2022 refresh with faster M2 chip, new designs
M1 computers work with >1 external displays almost flawlessly with DisplayLink-capable dock-station/adapter. Dock stations are shit though. I use dell d6000 and do not recommend it. It's hot and USB ports on it stopped working. Charging and display outputs still work. And it's expensive.
whatch··on Ask HN: Any piece of hardware that was more of game changer than you expected?
I thought it would be a great idea to have two big monitors but I really hated that when I purchased the second one.

And then I just put one of my monitors right in front of me and now rarely use the second one. But when I need a second monitor I'm really happy I didn't sell it.

So layout makes a really big difference.

whatch··on I paid for a perpetual license of TeamViewer. Stop calling and emailing me
> They can't control the underlying content.

This is the only place where I would like to see more control from platforms. And I believe they can. Youtube already requires to label video containing paid promotion. They can require to label exact time interval so that it can be auto-skipped (without sponsorblock).

Instead they release one shitty "feature" after another.

whatch··on I paid for a perpetual license of TeamViewer. Stop calling and emailing me
Or platform can require that the creator labels paid promotion and penalise them if they don't. I hope Youtube will do that some day.
whatch··on Google requiring all ‘G Suite legacy free edition’ users to start paying
I was subscribed to paid g suite for more than 2 years and only used custom domain email. When Apple released iCloud+ [0] or whatever it is called, I immediately migrated there and am really happy with it.

You will probably need to subscribe to some iCloud plan and have an apple device. But if you already use those, you are good to go.
