wmedrano··on AMD expects to outsell Intel in Q4 for the first time in history
Lol, oops AMD > Intel. It must have been my bubble. I was on Ryzen in 2018. In 2020 I queried a few cloud servers I had access to and they seemed to be using EPYC CPUs. I basically had no exposure to Intel CPUs until my recent Panther Lake laptop.
wmedrano··on AMD expects to outsell Intel in Q4 for the first time in history
This is surprising news to me, for some reason I assumed AMD has been outselling AMD for at least the past 5 years.
wmedrano··on Gemini 4 Carbon
The tokens per second graph on AA seems practically worthless. Apparently Argon/Carbon run around 100tps, but in Opencode I'm getting <30tps which seems in line with openrouter.ai speeds as well.
wmedrano··on Putting Linux on my RTX Spark laptop because I don't have a Microsoft account

wmedrano··on Putting Linux on my RTX Spark laptop because I don't have a Microsoft account
Yeah, its pretty low. I get about 60tps with a specialized engine on Strix Halo that runs UD-IQ4_XS with MTP
wmedrano··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
I've enjoyed the tinkering and building projects as well. Unfortunately that and some cozy coding are relegated to hobbies instead of my job.
wmedrano··on MiniMax M3.1 Flash
It feels even slower when you consider thinking traces and tool calls which are skimmable at best.
wmedrano··on Ask HN: What do you run on a $5 VPS that's worth keeping online 24/7?
I have a Raspberry Pi running ForgeJo and Hermes where Hermes is also accessible through Discord.
wmedrano··on Why isn't the industry freaking out about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash?
I'm actually shocked by how many people seem to have max subscriptions.

Something about renting that much compute doesn't sit right with me so I stick with the $20 subs.

wmedrano··on Gemini 4 Argon
The model (at least on the settings I used) was not for interactive chatting. It was for longer running tasks.

Edit: my view is probably tainted by the fact that I only used it at work for work with Antigravity CLI

wmedrano··on MiMo v2.6
Any idea on how they get the pricing so efficient? Their artificialanalysis graph has them on par with GLM 5.3 but at less than 10% of the price despite being larger than GLM 5.3.
wmedrano··on Why don't machine learning research agents overfit?

wmedrano··on Replacing a Rust Enum with a 64-Bit Word Made My Interpreter 17% Faster
Ocalm also has 63bit integers in case you want other implementations in the wild.

wmedrano··on What's new in Emacs 31.1
Are there any Zed features you're going to miss? Is the AI notable?
wmedrano··on What's new in Emacs 31.1
I started getting a little more into ELisp after reading The Land of Lisp, though its probably a bit basic. If I were to try to get better at ELisp through reading books/docs, I'd look into Common Lisp material.
wmedrano··on What's new in Emacs 31.1
I'm excited for the user-lisp/ changes. It'll let me create custom lightweight packages and have them lazily loaded by just sprinkling ;;;###autoload over interactive commands and modes.
wmedrano··on Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload
Ok in theory, but I don't think it applies here. Maybe it does in a cultural way.

Arrayref seems somewhat niche, but its kind of in the standard library as of Jan 2026 as std::slice::as_array https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/primitive.slice.html#method.as...

wmedrano··on Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload
This particular crate (arrayref) seems pretty niche, but also doable in std now.

It lets you take a slice `&[T]` and return a slice with a known number of elements`&[T; N]`. tiny-skia was probably using this to get some SIMD optimizations.

As of Jan 2026, this seems to be in the standard library under slice::as_array https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/primitive.slice.html#method.as...

wmedrano··on Writergate: Zig I/O Interface Overhaul
Zig is more about "no hidden control flow" than conciseness.

wmedrano··on DeepSeek V4 Pro 0813
Some benchmarks are out. Seems a bit weaker than Opus 4.8 but at least 10x cheaper once you account for verbosity. https://artificialanalysis.ai/?models=claude-opus-5%2Cclaude...

Wonder how much more they'll squeeze out.

wmedrano··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026)
I'm creating an Emacs package out of the custom JJ stuff I had. I'll probably publish it to Melpa in a month or so.

wmedrano··on Rune 1.1: adds Python, an Emacs editor, a symbol index and is now free
I had to chuckle at this pro

> Built-in Emacs editor

The built in editor is a one of my least favorite parts of Emacs. I'm in it for the customizability.

wmedrano··on Buz – A fork of Bun using modern Zig, with sub-1s incremental builds
The hard to detect is the compilers technical reason for not doing the analysis. Maybe it will one day.

In practice, it's annoying to track if those small util functions become dead code.

wmedrano··on Gemini 3.6 Flash, 3.5 Flash-Lite, and 3.5 Flash Cyber
Could be a good tradeoff for the flash model though. 3.5 -> 3.6 is a tiny bit cheaper and maybe faster?

artificialanalysis.ai has it going from 165 tps -> 304 tps. openrouter.ai needs more data but it has it going from ~100 tps -> ~150 tps, though at peak 3.5 has reached 156tps.

wmedrano··on China's open-weights AI strategy is winning
So.... What models have actually failed?
wmedrano··on Kimi K3: Open Frontier Intelligence
Where does the less than a third the price come from? From the provided benchmark suite, it came slightly under half.
wmedrano··on Ask HN: Is it just me, or is software buggier across the board?
I haven't notice any significant changes.

My Linux experience gets more polished every year. Last serious issue I remember is a AMD GPU kernel crash around 2022(?).

I feel like Android has always had its glitches. I can live with the current set, but each update has me nervous about the new set of bugs that will appear.

wmedrano··on Interview with Mitchell Hashimoto about Ghostty and Zig
This is not surprising and perhaps one of the things I respect about it. Zig is pretty minimalist and I would prefer denying my pet features over becoming design by committee.

I'm a bit curious, what features could you not do without?
