wolco2··on What I’ve Learned in 45 Years in the Software Industry
Having a tech track is the right direction.

Having no track even better. Some people like what they are doing and the field is constantly changing. You want your best surgeons doing operations not managing other doctors.

wolco2··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Beware building against a paid api as the rates/rules will change under you and you will be more stuck compared to a public api.

I wouldn't trust any api you don't control, don't have a solid contract (without the changable terms) or isn't owned by a nonprofit.

The free ones will hurt you but you expect it. The paid ones hurt more because you often build a business around an ecosystem that eats you up.

wolco2··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
The ones in the sidebar are based on global patterns to that specific video.

The homepage ones should show you subscriptions videos but also based on the last keywords/videos watched.

I don't see the value in using 2012-2019 videos watched when your recent ones speak more to what you currently are interested in.

wolco2··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
Just because you share more things in common with those you hate doesn't mean the recommendation is broken.

If a large percentage of people who watch gun blowing up videos also are interested in the videos you mention than why wouldn't they show it (I assume if it were breaking guidelines it would be removed)

wolco2··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
Mainstream media started killed credibility in the 80s and what we see is the result of a media that thinks it speaks for all but represents only half at best.
wolco2··on Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world (2016)
You give up the walk in bigger cities unless you pay top dollar for a downtown condo so you end up on transit (bus/subway), bike or even uber commuting
wolco2··on Cincinnati is home to the largest unused subway system in the world (2016)
In this day and age of covid are subways and mass transit really that safe / healthy?
wolco2··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
If you have developers that can use git they can setup and maintain a local git or source control.

If no one in your company can do that.. hire or outsource.

wolco2··on My Google Traffic Has Fallen to Zero
Not in search or advertising.
wolco2··on Quitting a New Job
It wasn't fair to others for you to stick it out because your heart wasn't in it so you wasted everyone's time training you for a few months only to quit when you are finally half productive.

The real reason you left is the commute and office decor. Moving from a 15 walk to an hour trainride is a big change. Moving to an environment where people care more about product than impressing people is a huge culture shift.

In the end covid would have forced everyone wfh anyhow.

"I figured it wasn’t really fair to my colleagues at Nuro to stick in a job that my heart wasn’t in."

So, in the end, I decided that option 2 was the best fit for me. I continued at Nuro and did my best to get up-to-speed and to contribute to my team’s work, but at the same time jumped right back into the job market"

wolco2··on BadEconomics: Putting $400M of Bitcoin on your company balance sheet
From my experience on here. When the articles hit the frontpage it is time to sell. If no story has appeared in 6 months buy.
wolco2··on 20 months, 2K hours, 200K € lost. A story about resilience and sunk cost fallacy
Code quality has little to do with performance.

Code quality here is more messy code, code that work now but doesn't abstract, ugly variables names like x..

Things that may even make your performance better now but harder/impossible to scale later.

wolco2··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
Using cloudflaire doesn't give me confidence this will in anyway not track me.
wolco2··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
It makes sense the fingerprint you create with javascript can identify you easily. Without that google treats you as suspect.
wolco2··on URL shorteners set ad tracking cookies
Not my personal url shortener.
wolco2··on Opensource your abandonware (2010)
Above average would imply only people better than a normal developer will evolve. Everyone below/above will get better or worse (bad habits creep in)
wolco2··on Tell HN: Please update your DNS records when abandoning servers
In the protocols themselves I wouldn't think so because how would it know you no longer paid for that ip.

Something digitalocean could do? Once an ip is assigned to another customer either: warn, warn/disable dns, change dns automatically

wolco2··on Indian Government proposes to buy bulk subscriptions of all scientific journals
Why not create a new journal that would be free for all? If the subscription journals provide no value I don't see the problem.
wolco2··on Lack of Vitamin D is associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and mortality
I remember vit-d coming up in articles before covid.
wolco2··on Show HN: I made a job board that doesn't allow HackerRank tests
Why would you need to put so much judgement into a single company. If the person has only worked for one company than their employment history won't be much of a factor.

If someone has worked at 6-8 places over 15/20 years covering a range of skills required I don't see the risk.

wolco2··on Facebook's advertising integrity chief leaves company
When you are build on a certain core you can't change who/what you are.

Facebook is built on getting / using user data to determine what to show.

Google is built on geting / using user data to determine what to show.

To betray those goals wouldn't make sense. How they go about it can change. Facebook has always gone hard and fast. They treat you more like a raw piece of meat. They will run ab tests on you and treat you like a variable in a ongoing experiment. Google has such reach that they can make minor changes and capture vast amounts of data.

Other companies are doing the same way but instead of using it to determine what to show you they use it to determine what ads look like so you can buy their product.

wolco2··on Show HN: I made a job board that doesn't allow HackerRank tests
I would highly doubt he would get rehired today at google first try. Leetcode is a different beast and things might not be all that fresh. Someone on the hiring committee might have said yes too many times this month.
wolco2··on Show HN: I made a job board that doesn't allow HackerRank tests
What about looking at employment history: types of companies, position, length, languages used... the basics..
wolco2··on California law bans delivery apps from listing a restaurant without an agreement
Advice I wish I could give myself. Don't eat out if you can avoid it and if you do go in person, never order in.

In secret someone who cares less about your health than anyone you know prepares hundreds of meals a day and if they don't come in because they are sick they lose money. If they don't try to hide mistakes it will cost them. If they don't save the company money by picking up food off the ground or using yesterdays soup as a base for today's soup they are doing a poor job. There are very few ways a customer can prove these mistakes unless they are visible upon receipt. Poor reviews hidden from the public is the only recourse.

Perhaps add a 30% markup fee for any grubhub customer or ubereats customer based on payment info or familiar faces/cars.
wolco2··on Bitcoin is a disaster
Are they magic beans or just beans?

A bitcoin address gives you a unique global address decentralizated that funds can be sent to. There is utility to that function.

Using your description the internet is a magic place faeries built that provides no usefulness because it's virtual.

wolco2··on Bitcoin is a disaster
The value of a bitcoin is the rarity of owning a coin is limited and the way it works opens up transactions globally. The price is the market demand.
wolco2··on Bitcoin is a disaster
I would love to understand this in detail.

If you mined it once you get a hash. When you say you lost those coins you lost the hash to the account? When you mined in 2009 was the hash smaller than today? Is brute forcing possible?

wolco2··on Google pilots a feature that aggregates short-form videos from TikTok, Instagram
I've never heard of it. Coub says it's youtube for video loops. Not sure that's the same.
wolco2··on Ask HN: Predictions for 2021?
Netflix stock will drop by half.

The singleton will be rediscovered and frameworks, languages and religions will form around the concept.
