wrxd··on Google researchers demand freedom to tell the world what they know about AI
Need more details. Any Googler willing to create a throwaway account and tell us what's going on?
wrxd··on Shrinking NixOS RAM footprint and resource requirements to the bare minimum
Absolutely. There are many lightweight services that would fit. The rule of thumb is to look for something written in a native language that doesn't need to process a huge amount of data.
wrxd··on Scaling Git at OpenAI
It's always the monorepo people who hit git performance issues. I wonder why
wrxd··on Shrinking NixOS RAM footprint and resource requirements to the bare minimum
Tangential but TierHive looks to be doing great work. You can get a VPS from them for about a couple of dollars a year.

It's not going to be powerful (128MB of RAM 1GB of storage) but if you run Alpine or NetBSD you can use it as a WireGuard peer, to host a small Website or to run some cron jobs.

wrxd··on Could a modern chess engine on a Pentium have defeated Kasparov in 1996?
Nice experiment. Also a reminder that while you can buy a speed up with better hardware looking for a better algorithm usually gives higher rewards.
wrxd··on $48 e-paper display can be whatever you want it to be
Kudos to Seeed Studio for not tying the hardware to a software ecosystem. That's how it should always be
wrxd··on Show HN: Marelleo, an open-source story box I built for my kids using ESP32
Nice project but the writing smells so much of LLM that I didn't manage to finish the article
wrxd··on Show HN: UK Farming Simulator
It could have told me that the game doesn't work on mobile before downloading all the assets
wrxd··on AlpineBSD
Depends on what you mean with "it runs". Does it boot? Probably. Can you use your WiFi adapter or graphics card? Probably not
wrxd··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
I use plain WireGuard. My use case is very simple: I have a server and a few clients (phone, laptop) I want to connect to the server when I'm away. I don't care to have VPN connectivity between my phone and laptop
wrxd··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
What's the advantage of adding a VPS to the mix?
wrxd··on Tailscale SSH: Investigation and remediation update
I like Tailascale as a product but I decided to move my homelab to plain WireGuard.

I wasn't using any of the additional features, I can get away with exposing a port on my router and I am changing devices rarely.

News like this make me happy I removed a lot of complexity and attack surface

wrxd··on A farewell to Arc browser
Arc felt designed for the general public, Dia feels very much designed for a project manager that spends all of its day in web applications.

Even the login screen asked for “your work email”…

wrxd··on NixOS is making me less afraid
Do you request a version tag or a hash? In principle Docker tags are mutable
wrxd··on NixOS is making me less afraid
I’ve never used it but https://trynix.dev/ should allow you to find the versions of nixpkgs with specific versions of a set of packages
wrxd··on NixOS is making me less afraid
It can. For instance I have a flake where I define all of my machines, share some confit between them and have clearly defined customisation points.

Form that configuration I can build everything on one of my machines and push the builds to the others. Or each machine can do its own builds.

Have a look at projects like NixOps or Colmena to see some more automation on top of standard builds targeting other machines.

wrxd··on E Ink Kaleido 4
I have a Kobo Clara Color. I like the product but colors are mostly a gimmick. Useful for the occasional chart and for books cover and that’s pretty much it.

Don’t expect iPad quality color, they’re very washed out.

I think a dedicated e-reader is a great choice (I only read books, not comics or other graphics heavy documents) but for that grayscale would be more than enough and color is an extra.

I would recommend you to go to a store and have a look live at a color eink screen to get a feel for what they offer.

wrxd··on Submarine cable resilience
I found https://smc.peering.tw/ fascinating. It shows an up to date status of submarine links to Taiwan and you can see many of them are having outages. Even more interesting is the historical view showing that the system operates in an always partly degraded regime
wrxd··on Maybe a better way to track the release history of a Git repo
> our Git monorepo was developing an annoying problem

Sentences like this are so common from people using monorepos that I am convinced they actually introduce more problems than they solve

wrxd··on Leaving Tech
The reality is that there is a huge fracture at the middle of the market. On the one side companies want people to go to an office and struggle to find good people. On the other side good people want to work remote and struggle to find good companies.

My email and LinkedIn are as full as ever with recruiters trying to hire me for positions I’m not really excited about. At my workplace (FAANG) we get tons of applications but very few of them are any good. When I apply to remote roles I can’t get an offer because I am competing with hundreds of other applicants and companies can pick someone with the exact expertise they’re looking for.

wrxd··on Discover vibe-coded alternatives to popular software
Are people actually looking for vibe-coded alternatives?
wrxd··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
So the exact same person working within the US, even better if sitting in an office, is a good employee but if they're working from abroad all of a sudden they're not that good?
wrxd··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
You know who doesn't need visas? Remote workers
wrxd··on Meta and Microsoft take steps to reduce employee usage of Claude AI
Sure. Should I also pay rent for my desk at the office?
wrxd··on What Meta got right with Muse
> I’d guess another team is probably tasked at researching a E2E encrypted remote inference mechanism where the personal data that does get out of the iPhone/ipad/Mac is encrypted with something Secure Enclave on processor, and “even Apple can’t read it”..

That’s already in production. Look for Apple Private Cloud Compute

wrxd··on SDF Public Access Unix System ... est. 1987
These are really cool services but to have a proper blast from the past you need to ssh in and join the chat on com or the discussions on bboard

wrxd··on I'm Tired of Being on the Network
You can have that. Here is a guide showing how to do it on an iOS device https://stopa.io/post/297 I think something similar exists for Android but you'll need to do some research.

iOS also has another way to dumb down the phone by limiting which apps are available: https://www.tomsguide.com/phones/apple-buried-a-perfect-dumb...

wrxd··on I'm Tired of Being on the Network
Yet services do whatever they can to convince the user to install their apps.

While I agree that the user shouldn't install unnecessary apps and probably remove most of what's installed, this is playing a rigged game. On the one side a person who want to do something, on the other end countless very well founded teams trying to exploit our monkey brains.
