wukerplank··on A love letter to the CSV format
CSV is so deceptively simple that people don't care understanding it. I wasted countless hours working around services providing non-escaped data that off the shelf parsers could not parse.
wukerplank··on Why OpenAI's $157B valuation misreads AI's future (Oct 2024)
I thought Nvidia is selling shovels
wukerplank··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
Fully agree, and my first association was the "Men Will Do Everything But Go to Therapy" meme.
wukerplank··on Compuserve
My former employer was a lot more YOLO than that. When I joined (in the mid 2000s) there was no https on the website, passwords stored in plain text, no backup strategy, etc. But they printed money with their system.
wukerplank··on Compuserve
I think there was no realtime CC processing back then. In my last job I found artefacts like fax forms where they would write down collected credit card data (from online subscriptions) to be sent to their processor. To have at least _some_ safety they would just check [1] if the CC number is sound.

wukerplank··on Simpsons Hit and Run source code (2003)
Not based on this source code, but on the original assets, 'reubs' made an Unreal Engine version of it.

wukerplank··on Google's updated privacy policy states it can use public data to train its AI
Taking a picture vs publishing/selling a picture are separate issues.
wukerplank··on Apple Vision
I'm on the fence about XR and I for sure won't buy a "Pro" grade device. But regarding your point about reality shaping: Sometimes it's just obvious. When I saw the presentation for the iPhone, I know this was the first phone I really really wanted - everything about it was compelling. I guess this what some XR enthusiasts feel about this device.
wukerplank··on Rarbg Is No More
Germany really takes the price when it comes to (torrent-based) piracy. The lawyers around it created a nice little ecosystem for themselves. Honeypot torrents and all. They have such a nice system that they don't go for the torrent sites, just milk the torrenters.
wukerplank··on Miller High Life cans destroyed in Europe over ‘Champagne of Beers’ logo
You'd think a company of that size would have lawyers who know about protected regional product names. It's EU thing and you might disagree with it, but you have to comply with laws if you want to do business.
wukerplank··on The Next Chapter for Learning on YouTube
I used to think like this about marketing in general. "Build it and they will come" was the usual motto in my formative years. But isn't it a shame to build a great product and then not have people engage with it, just because I frown upon marketing?
wukerplank··on Estonia, allies to trigger NATO Article 4
Nord Stream 2 was finished last year, it just isn't used yet.
wukerplank··on Germany shelves Nord Stream 2 pipeline
Gazprom runs underground storages in Western Europe which they didn't refill before Winter 2021/22. Back then it was speculated to be used to hike prices, now we know it's more about leverage.

wukerplank··on I nearly lost the Lightroom catalog with of all my photos
Why not enable AFP on your Synology additionally to SMB?
wukerplank··on DIY Camera Using Raspberry Pi
Notes app also does OCR and indexes the scanned content.
wukerplank··on Show HN: DragonRuby Game Toolkit
Seems like this game engine is built on top of RubyMotion which compiles to byte code - no (slow) Ruby VM. This probably also allows them to bundle the game for many platforms.

For hobbyists Gosu (https://www.libgosu.org/ruby.html) should be good enough, but is not very convenient to bundle and distribute.

wukerplank··on I hope work from home continues
While I enjoy working from home (fewer distractions and interruptions) I miss the social aspect of the office. I consider many of my colleagues friends and having the occasional beer after work, coffee maker chit-chat and common lunch breaks added a lot of texture to my life as a "worker".
wukerplank··on Adobe Photoshop ships on Macs with Apple Silicon
Amazing accomplishment considering how long they struggled when the PowerPC->Intel transition happened.
wukerplank··on Why is the deathbed perspective considered so valuable?
Is that how achievements were defined in the The Harvard Adult Development Study?
wukerplank··on Yellen Summons Regulators to Discuss Financial Market Volatility
I think the European equivalent is politicians "landing" a consulting job at Gazprom.
wukerplank··on A CSV file with 80k tweets from the day of the capitol hill riots
> keep the society divided for as long as possible

There can't be unity with fascists. They don't respect the values and rules of a democracy.

wukerplank··on LA: Ambulance crews to not transport patients with little chance of survival
So, leave the body by the curb?
wukerplank··on A container ship lost a record 1,800 containers
But with cars it's different as the individuals are responsible for their action. Not some shipping company. Why should I pay for reckless/drunk drivers?
wukerplank··on Why did renewables become so cheap so fast?
Regarding Saudi Arabia: They should sit on a huge pile of money and the end of fossil fuels is not a big bang event. I would have expected them to use that money for R&D to shape the post oil world to stay relevant.
wukerplank··on For the first time in Europe, registrations for EVs overtook diesel
You make it sound like that's a bad thing. If my city becomes Diesel free in the next few years I won't ask where the money came from.
wukerplank··on DoorDash and Societal Arbitrage
Is there a source for that?
wukerplank··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
The specs that irk me are RAM and SSD, even more since they started soldering them on. CPU & GPU were always kinda on par with the rest of the field.
wukerplank··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
My 2012 Macbook Pro was also slowly dying. As a Hail Mary I opened it up, cleaned it and renewed the thermal paste on CPU and GPU. Now it's back to old speeds!
wukerplank··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
I'm also a fan of macOS, but those hardware specs (RAM, SSD) were weak 5 years ago.
wukerplank··on Introducing the next generation of Mac
On paper the new Macs seem like Raspberry Pis with a fancy case and display.
