xgl5k··on San Francisco to ban software that "enables price collusion" by landlords
They will do anything besides build more housing.
xgl5k··on Show HN: I made a Mac app to search my images and videos locally with ML
i'm definitely interested in that
xgl5k··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
In the US there is only iMessage and regular SMS. SMS is interoperable with iMessage. People are just making a much bigger deal about the green bubbles than they should.
xgl5k··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
This is a geopolitical ploy to thwart America's dominance in Tech, as a cope for not being able to produce any homegrown rivals to America's tech giants.
xgl5k··on Apple announces ability to download apps directly from websites in EU
The EU is not exactly doing this exclusively for privacy. This is a geopolitical ploy to thwart America's dominance in Tech, as a cope for not being able to produce any homegrown rivals to America's tech giants.
xgl5k··on Clicks – Physical keyboard for iPhone
Steve Jobs probably rolling in his grave seeing this lol
xgl5k··on The great cousin decline
Exactly. Not only do I know all my first cousins very well, but I also occasionally meet up with 2nd cousins and once a blue moon will even catch up with or run into third cousins.
xgl5k··on Show HN: Beeper Mini – iMessage client for Android
Easier to kill something when it is a small niche area that few people know about rather than wait until it gets bigger and more people use it.
xgl5k··on Physical attractiveness and intergenerational social mobility
I don't think anyone doubts that taller, more attractive men are more likely to be promoted or end up in positions of power. Most obvious example is presidents; average height for presidents is 6 feet.
xgl5k··on Physical attractiveness and intergenerational social mobility
Maybe the proper thing to track is household income, household net worth.
xgl5k··on Export Controls on Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items
yes we are already amidst Cold War II.
xgl5k··on Export Controls on Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items
Cold War II has already started
xgl5k··on Export Controls on Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items
US and USSR were decoupled in the Cold War; US and China will probably be decoupled in Cold War II.
xgl5k··on Export Controls on Advanced Computing and Semiconductor Manufacturing Items
Both the US and China are working to decouple their economies long term, starting with the most critical sectors first. Both sides are aware that there are short term consequences and some of their businesses may suffer but that in the long run decoupling will be better for their respective countries.
xgl5k··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Tech is still immature compared to those other industries. I believe generally the more mature an industry is, the more it moves from disruption to rent-seeking. There may be a time at some point in the future to consider breaking up tech when but right now it makes more sense to break up the more mature industries.
xgl5k··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Even with Google search being so dominant, there are alternatives like DuckDuckGo, Bing, Yahoo. Many people are also starting to use ChatGPT as an alternative to some of the things they used search engines for.

On Android you can sideload apps, install alternate app stores.

Implying these companies are monopolies is an overstatement.

xgl5k··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
Most of the disruption is done by startups not the big companies.

The influence is nowhere near as negative as the impact from the other industries I mentioned.

They gained gained market share by providing better goods and services than the alternatives.

Still, there are viable alternatives to essentially every good or service provided by these companies.

xgl5k··on The FTC sues to break up Amazon over an economy-wide “hidden tax”
FTC should go after other industries that are far more harmful to customers than tech. ISPs, healthcare/insurance, etc. Tech should be no where near the top of concerns for the FTC.

This is a political stunt. If Lena Khan and the FTC were actually interested in consumer protection, they would go after other industries first.

xgl5k··on Public exposure to BPA exceeds acceptable health safety levels
they should be wearing gloves
xgl5k··on Public exposure to BPA exceeds acceptable health safety levels
also glass/metal food storage containers instead of plastic ones. And, always decline to take receipts at stores.
xgl5k··on Public exposure to BPA exceeds acceptable health safety levels
Not only would the problem persist if we can magically remove these pollutants from all new products in every country starting now, but it would continue to get worse. The plastic in the pacific takes decades to break down. Every decade since the 50s we've produced more and more plastic. So its like a ticking time bomb, there's going to be more and more microplastics in the environment.
xgl5k··on Public exposure to BPA exceeds acceptable health safety levels
Not practical, but living off-grid, in the woods, without any plastics is all I can think of.
xgl5k··on California Forever
according to the map in this SF Chronicle, the southern end of 'California Forever' is just a stones throw from Antioch/Pitsburg bart. Ideally California Forever would make a light rail system. And Ideally that light rail system would connect with Bart by crossing the Sacramento River. This would make 'California Forever' well connected with rest of Bay Area.

xgl5k··on California Forever
Based on the map in the SF Chronicle article, the southern part of city is a stone's throw from Pittsburg Antioch Bart. Might be wishful thinking, but hopefully this is what brings bart to Solana county. https://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/solano-fairfield...
xgl5k··on California Forever
Building an entire new city in Solana is better for California than 3-4 townhomes in Atherton.
xgl5k··on ‘California Forever’ website touts the city tech billionaires trying to build
San Jose has an Airport in the middle of the city. But weather is much better in San Jose.
xgl5k··on Chicago’s parking meter disaster
This will set a bad precedent and harm other potential public/private partnerships. Public/private partnerships can be useful like what Brightline is doing.
xgl5k··on Chicago’s parking meter disaster
Will only work assuming population and economy will continue to grow in the future. While this has always been the case in the USA, it is not always the case globally.
xgl5k··on Chicago’s parking meter disaster
Not locked. You can roll it over into a IRA/ roth IRA and manage yourself. You won't pay early withdrawal taxes as long as you roll over within 60 days.
xgl5k··on Why Socialism? (1949)
70+ years later and I don't believe it's possible to transition from (normal) capitalism to a socialist system without falling into "state capitalism" precisely because human social structures <generally> concentrate power. I guess I'll believe it when I see it.
