xhkkffbf··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
These deals aren't as slimy as they look. Yes, there's no marginal cost, but the goal is to spread out the costs as evenly as possible with the companies using the software. Setting the price per core just means that the companies that might do more processing shoulder more of the software cost. (And, yes, it's another way to gouge companies. But it's gouging based on use.)
xhkkffbf··on Kemi Badenoch says Africans should apologise for slavery
I know a black man who went to one of the big castles in Ghana that used to hold slave markets. He was shocked and humbled to find out that his family name is shared with some of the leaders that ran the slave markets in the past. He doesn't like to talk about it.
xhkkffbf··on North Korean fake job interview led to $6.3B Binance heist
Except for the bosses like Zuckerberg, Jobs, Wozniak, Gates....

Do I need to go on?

xhkkffbf··on YC's Garry Tan uses AI agents so much, he spends up to $200K a year on tokens
Didn't you mean to use past tense? "Wasn't that the job ...."
xhkkffbf··on NYT demands Brave shut down its paywall blocker and end deals with AI firms
Seems like infringement to me. Right?
xhkkffbf··on Is There Anything Left in the Dream of Cold Fusion?
Yes. Those neutrons were real.
xhkkffbf··on Kalshi and its co-founders face felony charges for violating Utah gambling laws
Gambling, at least in casinos, means betting on very random and unpredictable things like the roll of a die. That's the distinction between games of chance and games of skill.

In reality, every thing we do in life is a gamble. Even investing in US Treasury Bonds. (And if you don't think so, look at the national debt again.)

xhkkffbf··on The AI Boom May Be Sowing Seeds of Another Financial Crisis
I agree that there's much wild speculation, but some of the speculation is pretty mild in comparison. Micron trades at a forward P/E multiple of approximately 4.3 x to 5.0 x based on consensus forward earnings estimates. Those aren't bubble numbers. Those aren't even utility numbers anymore.

I think everyone is worried and, at least in this case, being cautious.

xhkkffbf··on New England RetroFest Recap – By Paul Lefebvre – Goto 10
To be fair, many of the machines at the event were built before HTTP/HTML. Many were built before Gopher.
xhkkffbf··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
The students can just log in with a generic Gmail account using a incognito tab.
xhkkffbf··on Landline phones will switch off across Britland in 100 days, no extensions
The article talks about advertising the change on billboards, TV and whatnot.

They really should track usage of calls going into and out of the old switch for the copper line. That will tell you who is still using the old copper lines.

xhkkffbf··on Jobless tech workers are being left out of San Francisco's AI boom
This isn't exactly true because some others participate indirectly. The most obvious winners are the people who bought housing or other real estate. There are also non-programmers who invested, the most famous may be the Persian carpet dealers in Palo Alto who've been investing in startups on the side.

Yes, there are many who don't own their house, but some of those can also benefit. California has some of the most generous social benefits in the nation, all because they can tax the tech companies.

xhkkffbf··on Drupal is now light-years ahead of its reputation

xhkkffbf··on The Lucrative World of Literary Scams
I know a few publicists who every one here would agree are 100% legit. They've been America for a long time. They've worked in publishing. Etc. And what do they do? Charge the author, send out some press releases and get the author in front of some book clubs. And what is a book club? A bunch of faces on Zoom.

I'm not sure what's so different between the legit publicists and the scammers.

xhkkffbf··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
How many people complaining about this were cheering when FB deplatformed Donald Trump?
xhkkffbf··on Tesla Roadster
While I respect the public transit system, it has many disadvantages over private cars. The NYC subway, for instance, is amazing in many ways, but if you're just slightly old or infirm, you can't navigate it. DC's subway, built at a yuge price, does have elevators but they are often broken. And if you're traveling at non-rush hours, you'll have to wait 5-20 minutes and then pause your trip for every stop along the way.

I can see how a young, fit and childless 20 something would be much happier with a good public transport system, but once you stop fitting that narrow model, your affection for urban dreams dies slowly.

And don't get me started on the price for construction and maintenance.

xhkkffbf··on Programmable pigments: Photochromic nanoparticle inks for rewritable tattoos
Reminds me of that Ray Bradbury short story, "The Illustrated Man."
xhkkffbf··on Beauty in DVD Menus
My DVD player provides it. Must be a special feature.
xhkkffbf··on Tell HN: Bob Cringely has died
He traded early Apple stock for cash? Oh, there aren't many acts so foolish in hindsight.
xhkkffbf··on Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal
Perhaps they suspected and they deliberately said things that they knew their new overlords would want to hear?
xhkkffbf··on Nazi Germany had no hope of making an atomic bomb, uranium cubes reveal
It was invented before Islam began. I believe the creator was Persian.
xhkkffbf··on "The only intuitive interface is the nipple" (2012)
Many mothers and their children don't find it so intuitive at first. There are lactation consultants who teach mothers (and indirectly the children) what to do.
xhkkffbf··on Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to Chromebooks
No. It's about pushing decisions out to the edges and empowering parents (and students) to help run the school system. To frame it this way is to deny the powerful evolution brought about by real choice.
xhkkffbf··on 500k facial scans at UK stations yield no arrests, 1 false positive
This happened a few years ago before flock. Some idiot drove down the street with a pellet gun shooting at car windows. About five of us needed to pay several hundred dollars a piece to replace the glass.

My street is not "horrible", but everyone on my street would have loved to have a camera that recorded what happened. Even if we didn't get a working license plate number, it would have been useful to see what happened.

It doesn't have to be a "monster crime gap" to get people to vote for these things. It just takes some selfish idiots.

xhkkffbf··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
And how much did it cost for the authors to produce the books in the first place? Everyone wants to believe that piracy is okay because the creators costs don't matter.
xhkkffbf··on Unsealed Briefs in Authors’ Case v. Microsoft/OpenAI
The old model was designed to split the development costs among all of the readers. Just who is going to write books? Only people with government grants and the rich folks who can self-fund?
xhkkffbf··on How I changed teaching after AI managed to do all my homework assignments
It's worth noting that the he's not afraid to us LLMs when it cuts the teacher's workload. The Slack bots are all automated.

I generally think this is okay because the students are getting more feedback, but some students are starting to call this out as hypocrisy. At Dartmouth, there's a debate running because the Provost was using LLMs to improve his writing. He's not in a class. He's not breaking any official rules. But somehow people are feeling like he's cheating.

xhkkffbf··on Advice to a Beginning Graduate Student (2001)
Best advice: they may call you a "student", but you're more of an employee. You should treat it more like an apprenticeship for a job than some nurturing rebirth. It's not about you. It's about bringing in more money to the enterprise.
xhkkffbf··on My brother's new high rise apartment doesn't allow individual internet services
This is even a problem in neighborhoods where the townhouses are pretty close to each other. I was in one and there were fifty hot spots that were visible.
