y2244··on How Alberta Eradicated Rats
This bit made me laugh

But wild rats are rare. Albertans have grown so unaccustomed to rats that they frequently mistake squirrels, gophers, and other small animals for them: of the 875 reported sightings in 2025, only 47 turned out to be actual rats.

y2244··on .gitignore Isn't the only way to ignore files in Git

y2244··on Ask HN: Looking for a CI/CD project for my local lab
Take the time to read up on CI/CD

Lots of different options, hosted and self hosted.

Github actions and GitLab are two of the more common ones, the latter is self hosted but the former is the dominant one if CV skills is needed

y2244··on How we run Firecracker VMs inside EC2 and start browsers in less than 1s
Doesnt lambda use Firecracker under the hood?
y2244··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
The compute deal is for their depreciating hardware.

Matter of time before its no longer considered good enough by the main players.

Anthropic are building their own Datacenters so it's a stop gap

y2244··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Do kids grow out of it by a certain age though?
y2244··on SpaceX to buy Cursor for $60B
Like Tesla the stock is held by many powerful and rich people.

Elon is smart and doesn't buy things alone, he brings in many people so they all have a interest to protect their investment.

y2244··on Humiliating IIS servers for fun and jail time

y2244··on How the UK government is using AI to speed up the planning system

y2244··on A Peter Thiel-Backed Tribunal Is Putting Journalists on Trial
"Once Objection issues an adjudication, satisfied clients can pay an extra fee to promote the finding “so it engages with the disinformation as it spreads through social media,”"

So the money maker is PR services after a positive verdict?

y2244··on A Peter Thiel-Backed Tribunal Is Putting Journalists on Trial
But Thiel is a tier one person in Tech
y2244··on DeepSeek V4 Pro at 5% the cost of Claude – what it takes to close the gap
More companies should be using cheaper models and self hosted.

Most developers don't create cutting edge software, they make boring and straight forward CRUD apps with long established frameworks and languages.

You don't need a cutting edge model for that.

y2244··on Among the large new rockets Amazon was counting on, only Europe has delivered
Amazon does some good for once!

Companies like Amazon (regardless of the Blue Space link), alongside governments, who have a demand to send things into space, are critical because it means investors are willing to back competitors of SpaceX

The SpaceX near monopoly is not good for the planet

y2244··on Peter Thiel's 'Dialog' network was super-secret. A data leak changed that
"Attendees are also asked to provide their “Political leaning” and are given the choices of “Far Left,” “Left,” “Right,” and “Far Right.”

So why has this website not said if any, and if so which, of the 113 self declared as far left or far right? As thats in the public interest to be made public.

Is it because of fear after Thiel destroyed Gawker by funding the Hogan troal?

y2244··on Stop Using JWTs

y2244··on Amazon Announces Multibillion-Dollar Data Center in Missouri
Think the basic play is to IPO or be acquired so investors make their 10x and someone else deals with the enshittification later
y2244··on Newer macOS runs slower on Intel (undeniably) – on purpose or "accident"?
Would guess not intentional.

Apple has little financial incentive to spend money on testing new software beyond the minimal on intel macs.

Unlike older iphones where apps are being bought in large volumes so they make money, a lot of Mac apps are web based or downloaded directly/via home brew. Its only apple music and tv etc they would take care not to break

So Apple have an incentive to maximise the number of older iphones in use to sell apps and so subscriptions but less for Intel macs

y2244··on Salesforce to Acquire Fin (formerly Intercom) for $3.6B
Saas is cheap for a small company but once you want large volume or per seat pricing for a large amount of users it gets expensive.

But rolling out your own allows you to then scale at minimal incremental cost

y2244··on Ask HN: What is the best LLM for consumer grade hardware?
Pick up a used 3090 with more ram.

It holds it's value so you won't lose much if anything when you resell it.

But otherwise, as said, install Ollama and/or Llama.cpp and run the model using the --verbose flag.

This will print out the token per second result after each promt is returned.

Then find the best model that gives you a token per second speed you are happy with.

And as also said, 'abliterated' models are less censored versions of normal ones.

y2244··on Ask HN: What is the best LLM for consumer grade hardware?
And I think LM Studio has non commercial restrictions
