yolp5··on AI is automating coding. So why are software developer job postings on the rise?
I wonder if it's the definition of "senior" that shifting. From someone well versed and experienced in software development to deep domain experts who happen to have development skills.

10-15 years ago, the advice for anyone was to apply for the job even if you don't fit 100% of the requirements. "It's a wishlist not a requirement list".

At some point in the past, few years this seemed to gave changed. Now you have to be an expert

Some years ago I applied to a government that I thought sounded interesting. It seemed to be a pretty damn good match for my skill and resume. It basically entailed developing a CRUD app to store and analyze fishery statistics. Everything about the job made it sound like it was mostly rub of the mill .NET work. Surely a good fit for me who has done that stuff for a variety of different government and private organization. I got rejected for not having enough domain experience

I'm not sure where they planned to find such a cross-domain expert who was willing to move to such remote, yet high CoL area for the already comparatively dismally salary, but hey, it didnt matter, the agency got gutted a year or two later.

In a similar way I'm reminded of when I first looked into "scientific programmer" jobs. HN swore up and down that they were desperate for developers, and that this was mostly a product of lower pay. The reality seemed a bit different. Nearly every job I saw in that area wanted a PhD scientist who could program, not the other way around.

Its working out pretty well for the Israelis

yolp5··on How Protein Took over the World
> Though oddly, I’ve never seen an anti-fibre influencer

Ah-ha! At last, a niche I can squirm myself into in our brave new world.

yolp5··on How Protein Took over the World
I'll grant you the food dessert and going back arguments, but unless I'm buying particularly out of season or less common, foreign vegetables, produce is often one of the cheapest sections of the store.
yolp5··on Ask HN: How would you go about domain change and getting a job in the domain?
Get yourself a time machine and go back 10 or so years when the market was hot enough for this it be feasible.

> You either supply nobody and then you get to play your neutrality card or you pick a side. If you supply both sides you're just a cynical war profiteer without a conscience.

Yes, and that helped turn the US into the global hegemony it is today. No wonder China wants a wack. Power doesn't need a conscience.

> I can’t really think of anyone that has fit that bill over the last 75 years in Africa, the closest might be Paul Kagame in Rwanda.

Seemed to be at least a few in the immediate era of independence for certain African states. Unfortunately for them the cold war was raging and I think most of them were brutally murdered and replaced "strong men" who crippled their country with rampant corruption and cowardly paranoia.

I saw a video the other day advertising AI-powered a anti-air/drone gun. Seems to be part of a defense trade show, but also seemed to indicate that it was available to certain "qualified" citizens, but I'm not sure what that means exactly
yolp5··on Anthropic bans 'abusive or cruel behavior' towards Claude
Just popping, maybe snorting. A bunch of amphetamine addicts.
yolp5··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
Yeah but those new grads are too uppity. We tried throwing money at them, but they're more interested in productivity destroying quality of life improvements.

The imported worker, on the other hand, is a more efficient and compliant machine. Maybe if we make those youths as poor as the workers we import, they'll eventually learn some gratitude.

90% of the time when you really break down the "real" problems. You learned they aren't gon a be fixed by fucking software.

yolp5··on Trump says anyone who uses the phrase "artificial intelligence" is "the enemy"
The man is in his 80s. He doesn't look too healthy. The mind rots. They spent a lot of time pointing at Biden about this, but tbh they both belong in a care home.

I still think they should have duked it out behind the bleachers or whatever it was those geezer were rambling about one election cycle. I'd have bought the PPV even.

If so, I think we can save America.

Flash games had some soul at least. Im not sure what if was, but after flash died and we got all these fancy web graphics technologies web games felt technically impressive, but sterile and empty.

yolp5··on Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking"
> Who designed and built your house?

Designed? I'm not sure. An architect or engineer of some sort I suppose. Someone who has credentials that i can't afford to go back k and get at this point in my life.

Built? I live in a very old house right now. Not sure who may have built it then. Probably the same people often building houses now, poor immigrants who had some issue preventing them from working a better job or trade.

> Who designed and built your cars, planes, boats, etc?

Cheap workers in foreign countries? Maybe some of the plane ans boat stuff if done domestically and is a little more lucrative though. I'll give you that.

> Who fixes your HVAC or plumbing?

The guy my slumlord sent to fix my plumbing complained to me about the state of his government housing. But i suppose according to HN he must just be pocketing his six figure salary and scamming the government.

yolp5··on Engineer says Claude Code has made his job "soul-sucking"
Is it? I knew a guy years ago who had a mechantronics degree. He was a coke dealer and worked at a grocery store. He seemed to indicate it was neat, but not very useful.

I've been looking for one of these for years. Dont think ive ever seen one for sale. Sadly my retrocimputing days (especially for such rare and likely expensive machines) is about over. I've met people willing to strike me good deals on lisp machines, but these are just a bit too obscure perhaps.

> Can this be undone in the future if folks realize it was too monopolistic and it was in fact an anti-trust violation?

I predict the democrats winning, shoving it all under that table and pushing for "reconciliation" and "moving forward" while continuing the rotten status quo that got Trump elected in the first place. Maybe a few token prosecutions of low level wage workers involved.

yolp5··on The mental health of young men is declining. Experts warn it could get worse
The problem is that this is antithetical to western (particularly) American cultural propaganda.

Now a lot of people are angry that you've been lying to them for years and the best you have to say now is "sucks to suck". I predict increasing political instability and violence and the social and economic classes get reshuffled.

yolp5··on The mental health of young men is declining. Experts warn it could get worse
> it should now be easier to get into the hobby, learn, and connect with others than it ever was.

Nope. I'm doing less hobby stuff that I was 5 years ago even. Anything that's not free software has gotten much more expensive or the opportunity cost has been raised too high and my wages are down.

yolp5··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
> Become world class experts in one thing

Good luck, unless you're very high IQ or a wealthy teenager.

Also you have to become a world class expert in something deemed valuable.

yolp5··on A sustainable web career, for when all this blows over
I was able to break into software by kinda exaggerating some freelance work I did when I was a teenager. Mostly doing websites for local business. Surely not an unfamiliar story here.

While everyone has been decrying site-builders for years, I recall a conversation I had around 16 with a small business owner.

I was trying to make some money and convince this guy to let me make him a site. What he said has stuck with me. It was something along the lines of:

"Why do I need a website. Most of my customers find me, contact and and engage with me on Facebook. I need someone who can manage a social media page"

Of course, that definitely was not my forte.

yolp5··on Developer Survey 2026
> Well, it ain’t what it used to be. This year, we’re finding survey respondents are less happy in their work—the numbers are showing less happy folks and more unhappy ones

Well no shit. In the last several years I got laid off, couldn't find work for a year, took a 30% paycut between inflation and the new jobs numbers and have been thrown in on some Kubernetes role that I dont care for.

What's worse is it doesn't get better from here. There is no light on the horizon. The field is dying. Companies still aren't hiring much and all the "interesting" jobs have become 1000x more selective. I figured when I was younger I would have time to drive my career in a direction I wanted. Now it's clear there's no real future outside maybe corporate climing, which I have little interest in. Many teams leads at my current company have been made managers and they're all miserable.

Glad I'm not the only one at least.

yolp5··on The mental health of young men is declining. Experts warn it could get worse
Saw some jackass in another thread complaining that young people keep floating towards extreme political ideologies both on the left and right.

Yeah... duh... and you'll get what you deserve. A large majority of boomers support raising taxes on the young so they can keep their SSI.

I have no sympathy for idiotic champions of a rotting status quo who would rather continue enriching themselves and screwing their children and grand children down the line while mocking them for recognizing. Fuck em.
