zecken··on More questions about whether researchers can trust OpenAI with unpublished math
Well, the investment dollars are spent on the customers for the most part, though also on salaries and equipment. But the lions share of the value is going to the shareholders (eg employees and investors)... and they have liquidated and will continue to liquidate a disproportionate value to what they have spent on us. By some estimations at least. It's very possible $1 into this machine to feed your queries is worth $10+ to a shareholder based on whatever new valuation they get. So I'd say there is a hierarchy of enrichment.
zecken··on Show HN: I made a tiny device for automatically recording digital pianos
wow this looks really cool -- I like that it doesn't lock you into a specific keyboard / manufacturer
zecken··on Show HN: Build an open-source computer vision model in seconds using text
Wow this is very cool. Would love to see some of the ideas in the video demo’d
zecken··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
I wasn't trying to be hyperbolic, I've only been delayed by a side show once in my neighborhood by the Chase center -- I've never been blocked by a self driving car. I'm sure everyone has different experiences, but the characterization the article tries to make that these vehicles are a menace to society strike me as overblown and contradictory to many people's lived experiences here. At least these folks are paying money to treat the city like a playground. I haven't seen anyone get love tapped by one of the self-driving cars, but if that's happening regularly it seems like a pretty serious problem.
zecken··on Dashcam footage shows driverless cars clogging San Francisco
I've been held up longer by side shows at intersections than driverless cars here. Not that SF is the lawless hellscape the media pretends is the case, but I do think it's a bit rich that city officials are pointing fingers at fairly remarkable services using paid permits that work well 99% of the time while failing to enforce laws that are broken more frequently.
zecken··on Show HN: Moonshine – open-source, pretrained ML models for satellite
Wow this seems really useful! Is it bad the first thing I think when I see this is how a nefarious government can use it with bad intentions?
zecken··on A 45 Minute Ride in San Francisco with No Driver (Waymo Autonomous Drive)
Pretty cool stuff -- I am not a Google/Waymo employee, but it's amazing to see how this technology is progressing.
zecken··on We don't do that here (2017)
Using "that doesn't work for me" as a euphemism for "no" sounds crazy to me.
zecken··on Magnasanti – The largest and most terrible city of SimCity
Another great video about this by HBO's John Wilson: https://vimeo.com/238073511
zecken··on The math prodigy whose hack upended DeFi won’t return funds
I feel like the fact this person, per the article, is a white supremacist who used the n-word in his code repeatedly is under-discussed here. Folks here jumping through hoops to rationalize why what he did is actually demonstrative of either flaws in crypto or the purity of arbitrage come off seeming very tone deaf.
zecken··on My Quantum Leap
I'm definitely too dumb to understand this, but it was an interesting read.
zecken··on I took down my Starlink dish (but haven't cancelled)
Regarding the second LAN port and proprietary cable — standard RJ45 ports are not waterproof, especially if they’re delivering almost 100W (the max load of this new dishy). I expect that plays into the decision making here; also, selling a phase array antenna plus power supply plus WiFi router for $500 is actually pretty cheap.
zecken··on Sonos wins major patent infringement victory against Google
I'm legitimately bummed that the ability to control all my speaker volumes at once is a patented technology that I now no longer have access to.
zecken··on SpaceX launches another 60 Starlink satellites while setting two reuse records
What's the source on this information? I haven't seen anything that says one was dead.
zecken··on Show HN: Rave Shoes and Adventures in Custom PCB Manufacturing
Thanks! It's funny how a few hours a week on a little side project can yield some interesting dividends.
zecken··on This Capsule Challenges Vacuum Tube (1948)
wow, what a time capsule. crazy how fast even after this that they proliferated everywhere
zecken··on Librem 5 Smartphone Final Specs
It says in this post that the IMU is killed when all 3 other skill switches are off
zecken··on Facebook has been paying people to install a “Research” VPN
I harbor serious doubts that most of the 'volunteers' here know exactly what it is they're providing -- the sign-up sheet probably didn't say "we will know very specifically your porn-watching habits" e.g.
zecken··on The impossible dream of USB-C
Strongly disagree with the article, it seems the author is confused about the internal hardware. The actual pin connections within all USB Type-C cables are the same -- no matter if they are shipped with a product that uses Thunderbolt, Displayport, or any other standard. The only variance cable to cable (and this exists on existing micro cables as well) is on things like shielding, AWG, and ferrites which would determine signal & power integrity over the length. IE don't use a very long & skinny cable for delivering lots of power or high speed data unless the cable was bought for that specific purpose, which is something consumers do today if they aren't using professional installers.
zecken··on Tesla Model S battery degradation data
It seems like the opposite might be true, and that batteries degrade from cycle count and not because of time. This is why they are rated in cycle counts (i.e. cycles until 80% capacity = life time of battery). Also important is the charge/discharge rate, but because the batteries are so oversized in Teslas they can discharge as low as .25C even at highway speeds which helps increase their lifetime.

zecken··on Android Oreo
A lot of people complaining about using a brand name here -- isn't Kitkat (the 'K' release) also trademarked?
zecken··on 600 Watt, 3d-printed, Halbach Array, Brushless DC Electric Motor [video]
Impressive on so many fronts, it's so cool what's possible nowadays with modern prototyping tech. Thanks for sharing!
zecken··on 41 Percent of Fliers Think You’re Rude If You Recline Your Seat
This is water.
zecken··on Arduino TRE
Probably UART, the same way the FTDI chip in new UNOs talks to the AVR. In any case, the reason having an ARM cpu w/ an AVR is beneficial is because you get the linux environment but real-time hardware GPIO access. This is far better than the software scheduling that bogs down RPis and makes it very difficult to do timing intensive tasks.
zecken··on Why I Quit OS X – Geoff Wozniak
Am I the only person who likes Yosemite? The interface is cleaner, spotlight isn't useless anymore, and messages now works with regular texts as well. Nothing is really broken from previous releases either...
