zeroCalories··on Rust Style Guide
Those are horrible cases if you're anything more than a hobbyist.

I don't want to update every place someone matches on my enum, when it's something not even in my project, just to get my PR to merge. Three teams use it? Fine. Ten? More? Not fine. You are adding cases into someone else's code just to unblock your own work.

The second case is actually not the same at all. Realistically, they will just pin your dependency to an older version. Now they can't benefit from new features and security fixes without going in and adding in a new case. Massive waste of time for them.

And of course I'm not just taking whatever Google says at face value. I read their justification, and it makes total sense for anyone that works on a non-trivial project. It follows how any stable public API is supposed to be designed.

zeroCalories··on Rust Style Guide
Why? Their justification seems reasonable to me. If other teams depend on your enum then you could end up in two really bad cases. First is that you end up having to fix a ton of code just to update your enum, which has it's own headaches. Second is another team's build starts to fail when they update dependencies. Horrible churn to cause for your org. Better to just have them design around non_exhaustive.
zeroCalories··on AI is a tool and using it well takes skill
The only greater evil in this world than mass adoption of AI will have been the normalization of hour long commutes.

A wheelchair is also a tool! A very efficient one too! People claim they've 2x'd their energy efficiency by not ever walking or standing, and they are much more happy now that they don't need to suffer the pain of walking! I'm thinking of amputating my feet just to make footoids seethe more!

zeroCalories··on Jeff – Jev-compatible 0.8B decision models, trained at home, ~30 ms
I've always been more afraid of these types of models than LLMs. These are what enable mass surveillance at scale and autonomous real time combat drones. Now they are spreading and being optimized. Gg.
zeroCalories··on GPT-6 Astra
Can it? Last I checked, all my free software operating systems and browsers were still hacked together trash. I can't wait for AI to actually be good so I can spam a bunch of AGPL code with it.
zeroCalories··on If You Build It, They Will Come
The stigma is pure cope. Most nerdy types I know wasted a ton of time on some stupid hobby. If not video games, it was some other dumb geek thing like anime, comic books, or furries.
zeroCalories··on If You Build It, They Will Come
That's the cost of doing business. Luckily, you can't go bankrupt from hurt feelings....
zeroCalories··on Goodbye, and Thanks for All the Bikesheds
Lol this feels trite to say, but tech bros are not ideologically homogenous. You and the author are mixing up different people commonly identified as tech bros.
zeroCalories··on Young adults are poor despite every metric which suggests otherwise
These are not mere personal goals, they provide value back to society, which in turn helps others to achieve these goals. That's why we are concerned with them. We have a generation of leeches and losers that are only concerned with maximizing their consumption, not leaving behind a legacy.

zeroCalories··on Ask HN: How do you effectively communicate or present?
I'm a horrible communicator, but these are some tips that have helped me:

1. Give the conclusion first, ramble the details after so people don't get lost.

2. Only share something if it impacts decision making, otherwise it's just noise.

3. Prefer arguments based on facts, because "I don't like it" is too vague for others to make decisions on.

zeroCalories··on Bun has been converted to rust. Now what?
Then you would expect to see several related CVEs and outages related to this? How many? Would you be willing to bet on it?
zeroCalories··on Bun has been converted to rust. Now what?
To be fair, who cares about ai slop websites? To be honest, they're often better than the average webdev garbage. Language runtimes are held to a much, much, higher standard.
zeroCalories··on Bun Has Been Converted to Rust. Now What?
I would trust a zig -> rust translation far less if it didn't make liberal use of unsafe, because that implies an order of magnitude more aggressive refactoring
zeroCalories··on Bun Has Been Converted to Rust. Now What?
Depends on who vibe codes it. At the end of the day the Bun developers are the ones responsible for the quality of their software. If they've reviewed the code closely, tested it, and eat their own dog food, then I don't see why I should treat it any different from any other untrusted 3p dependency.

IMO, the main problem with vibe coding is that it empowers reckless behavior at companies like Microsoft, and that people with no serious investment in outcomes are empowered to make things. Does that apply to Anthropic? The Bun team? It's not 100% clear yet.

Sometimes you gotta let people know how awesome you are. The real question is if you're misrepresenting yourself(all marketing, no substance).

zeroCalories··on Over 97% of the 'Linux' Foundation's Budget Goes Not to Linux
No one really "needs" anything. You can live perfectly well on minimum wage. But really, you could survive perfectly well as a slave. Infact, the world is content for you to die and get nothing. All "need" is "want". All you deserve is what you have leverage for.

zeroCalories··on Banned by Anthropic
After getting to the point where vibe coded slop is getting pushed to production it's not clear to me if a future where AI can replace me is a worse future than we have now.

zeroCalories··on Anthropic silently downgraded cache TTL from 1h → 5M on March 6th
Several thoughts went through my head before I realized what's wrong:

1. I guess longer caching means more stale data, which is why it's a downgrade? 2. Maybe this isn't the TTL I thought it was? 3. Maybe this isn't the cache I thought?

Then I clicked on the link and realized I had been mislead my the title.

zeroCalories··on My university uses prompt injection to catch cheaters
I also struggled with exams, but that's because my understanding was often shallow, due to a lack of effort to study and understand the material. I'm very suspicious of people that say they're smart, but can't perform on exams. That said, there's plenty of ways to structure things to avoid this. Have weekly, easy, pass / fail exams that ensure you've read the material at a basic level, or understood some basic concepts. Lab work. Presentations with live grilling from the professor to ensure you understand the topic.

I have a lot of ability. I'm not gonna flex it for others without pay that gives me significantly higher living standards than the average person. Are you going to force me to work?
zeroCalories··on Why Switzerland has 25 Gbit internet and America doesn't
Then as the local government, maybe start by removing that regulation. Or if the regulation is required, you're going to have to pay a premium for people willing and able to put up with it.
