zkmon··on Ask HN: What's your current AI agentic setup?
Tried the popular agents and paid models for some time, and now settled with a local model (Qwen3.8-27B-Q_6) and opencode desktop.

My work doesn't really require ultra super-intelligent models, or one-shot solutions. It's a standard python API, web app and some strict compliance requirements and tons of test cases. I have time to give the Q27B a few iterations. I monitor the progress and give directions while it keeps chugging off for about 30 mins for each medium-hard task. But I like the results. Exactly what is needed. It also allows me work on high-level stuff.

zkmon··on Basically no one is using AI agents for their DoorDash orders
Bots and tech are testing humanity's levels of desire for laziness and how much they are ready to pay for buying that laziness. Turns out that the desire is limitless. As someone said, the ultimate luxury is in having maximum laziness - not having to move, talk, think or use senses - the state of being a rock.
zkmon··on Qwen 3.8 27B on my laptop can interpret model weights, too
Unless you are trying to prove some hard math, or writing extremely complex code, for general coding tasks (which represent 90% of code out there) 27B-Q6_K is more than enough. Q4 does it well too, but might need a few more iterations.

For comparison, I also used GLM-5.3, Muse-Spark etc, with no significant improvement for ordinary/BAU coding tasks.

zkmon··on Qwen 3.8 27B on my laptop can interpret model weights, too
One RTX4090 with 24G gives me about 200k KV cache with Q4_K_M quant for typica coding tasks, via opencode. I use Q6_K with 60k cache if the work doesn't require scanning too many files. Q6_K is really good.
zkmon··on Qwen 3.8 27B on my laptop can interpret model weights, too
Qwen-3.8-27B - the best thing that happened in AI so far.

This thing can accomplish the same results as the frontier models do, if you are willing to play a role of an higher level architect or decision maker. Guide it a bit here and there like a tech lead and you get everything done.

The money you pay for frontier models is exactly for outsourcing that high level direction work to agents.

zkmon··on Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen
With due credit to the author and the community pushing these research fronts, I venture to say that the core capability of finding patterns in text and media comes to LLMs from the ability to find patterns in numbers in the first place. Since model weights are numbers, finding patterns and issues with those numbers should be a natural consequence, I believe.

The damage by the "progress" is multifold and pervasive. GM foods, with a goal of high yields, lost all nutritional value and gave the world insipid food and killed the natural foods forever. Supply chains and food regulations meant extreme processing of already killed food. What's left is bacteria-less, nutrition-less, sugary pulp that digests easily, increasing the consumption and economy.

If I think of any food and taste from the 70's, I feel suffocated now. It's disgusting to see all processed, sugar-loaded, gene-modified, beautiful foods in the stores.

The economy planners gave you cars, roads, food stores, supply chains and took away your time to grow your own food. You are just forced to take 5x amount of food in your car and consume it like biological pump with inputs and outputs. You became fat and ill and the economy tells you to believe it as a norm and call it growth. They even show in TV how all this is normal so that you don't feel bad about it.

You are turned into a country full of workers with everything streamlined to make you focus on the work. Your short working years are good enough. It has machinery to dump you in nursing home and not let your younger family care for you. Small kids? You got care centers. Don't waste your time in caring for others or yourself. Just get into the commute circus.

zkmon··on Hackers hijack Egypt highway billboard and Malaysian screens to show porn
You wanted speed and connectedness every where. Speed by automating the intelligence, speed of payment transactions, high-speed trains ... Result? The speed of hacking everywhere, speed of $6B vanishing in 20 minutes and speed at which things going wrong.

None of these would happen in places that are not invaded by speed of technology and connectedness. Slow is good, not sometimes, but always. Human life is not compatible with things moving at speed of electricity.

But you gave the controlling power to children. The children with science toys want more and more speed, just for fun and profit. They, unfortunately, control the future of human race.

zkmon··on I'm so bad at billiards that I ended up in the hyperbolic plane [video]
Entire math is junk food. Real animals don't touch that.
zkmon··on Alleged Chinese spy had 'close relationship' with Nvidia boss Jensen Huang
Sounds like a Bond movie plot.
zkmon··on Why birds can fly over Mount Everest (2020)
And now I know why a variety of coal is called "Lignite". And why dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals were so big.

What an amazing story. It's been a while since I read something so interesting.

Ultimately, all energy on earth comes from the Sun, stored in the bonds between atoms or molecules. Plants are battery-manufacturing machines that create these bonds inside the organic compounds. Animals do the opposite - break the bonds to release the energy stored by trees. Animals also store energy within their own organic compounds such as fats and muscles and thus become part of the food pyramid.

zkmon··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
AI is amazing, but it is not a tool anymore. Humans are the tools (agents) for AI to do things in real world. All the decision makers in business and polity are no longer able to rule out a direction provided by AI, making the AI the decision maker for humans. Even Fed is using "Sim Fed" to make rate decisions for the economy. The era of human-decision is over.

Also, you might think that you are observing Amish (or AImish) from a distance. It is same for them. They watch the modern world rot with uncontrolled and out-of-sync evolution. You are being observed.

zkmon··on Cognitive Mercantilism: AI panic resembles fears of early capitalism
There is an "about" page on their blog where author discusses extensively (probably written by AI as well) about how most of his writing is AI-written.
zkmon··on Cognitive Mercantilism: AI panic resembles fears of early capitalism
The author declares that it is fully written by AI using a few prompts. So, not surprising that the whole article is so weak at the core.
zkmon··on Cognitive Mercantilism: AI panic resembles fears of early capitalism
The analogy between farm work and intelligence work breaks down at their transition continuation, which the author missed, I believe.

When the people were were freed from farm labour, due to farm automation, people could find another economic activity which required the other capacity of humans - intelligence.

The transition from muscle-power work to mind-work was meaningful, as both muscle and mind were attributes of humans, creating demand for humans having mind power instead of muscle power.

But the continuation of that transition breaks down. Muscle power -> Mind power -> ???

Those 3 questions marks at the end are what's scaring people, and what is threatening the stability of the transition from mind work. If both muscle power and mond power are not things of value, how would the humanity progress to create value? Who buys it? Why do they buy it? Who hires whom? Why?

zkmon··on What Adobe v ArtCraft teaches us
Greed doesn't let people to see far enough. Investors of AI see it as a once-in-a-century kind of tech revolution and they don't want to miss riding it. Fund managers will be fired if they show any skepticism of AI. It's the myopic and FOMO forces that are at play. Banks would jump into the great Tulip mania if it happens again without blinking an eye. JP Morgan's CEO who once called crypto as idiotic, went full steam and joined the "idiotic" bandwagon. Not because he got enlightened, but because of FOMO.

For AI labs, it's not bad at all. They make their hey while the sun shines. It's worth it. For Investors, they are gamblers after all. They get their fun in betting. Totally worth it.

zkmon··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
Any physical thing that doesn't relate itself to a spatial location or doesn't honor space, distances, time, causality - does not belong the real world that is defined by the same artifacts.
zkmon··on I don't understand quantum physics (2018)
>> but we have to live with this strange idea if we accept that Quantum Physics describes Nature correctly.

That depends on how you define nature, world and universe. For me nature is defined by things that can be perceived by human senses.

zkmon··on Appreciating the beauty of all your body's scars and scratches
The concepts such as "appreciating", "beauty" etc are all artificial. You have what you have. There is nothing to appreciate or not appreciate. You. should take care of yourself and your folk. That's pretty there to it.

zkmon··on Local Wikipedia: Wikipedia, but only for things a half hour walk from you
I consider this to be far more progress for humanity than landing on moon or sending a spaceship to outside of solar system. That's because this move is in the right direction, while others are not. As a human, you need to first master your habitat around you, before getting excited or concerned about things that happen in another country thousands of miles away.
zkmon··on CVE-2026-111943: Compromised Intermediate Certificate Authority
Great. The technology has progressed enough to kill the existing technologies. It's like the fish in a pool creating a shark that eats away all the fish while the fish proudly announce that their great creation (shark) as the frontier progress for their fish race.

zkmon··on Hybrid Reasoning Agents: LLM agents that think in latent space, act through text
I'm noticing a a notion where thinking and reasoning is being shifted to agent from the model and definition of an agent is changing from being an adapter between the LLM and real world to being LLM+adapter. I think it is better to leave agent as just an agent, separate from LLM.

Agents don't think or reason about things. Agents help with action. LLM is what thinks and reasons.

zkmon··on Dogs seem to agree with humans that 'bouba' is round and 'kiki' is spiky
Not sure why it should be a surprising thing. Senses work together. Not isolated. I associate numbers with taste (2 and 5 are sweeter, 3 is salty, 7 is bitter and so on), and with spatial ladder-like locations (ladder goes up from 1 to 10 and then it becomes like rope bridge until 20 and then its like a hill climb until around 40 and then it is steep down- hill upto 100.

Words are definitely associated closely with geometric shapes, and with touch and sound.

Also, most importantly, all thoughts are attached to places that you have already seen. You can't think about anything without attaching it to a known place. When you forget something, it's because that physical place (room, road, or park) is crowded with other thoughts.

zkmon··on "I'm on a war footing": Terry Tao and the crisis in math
War against who? You don't need to make enemies out of things where you can avoid.
zkmon··on There's never been a better time to go into math (by: 3blue1brown) [video]
I have great respect to him for all his contributions to the learners. But I think he is off on this one. While he tried to sound motivational to the folks who suddenly lost their way, he should have also advised people to explore the open doors instead of banging on the closed ones, like he does throughout the video.

Sure, math does require people in future, but it can't accommodate as many as it does today.

zkmon··on Bleached corals thrive within days when touching healthy neighbour
There are no isolated phenomena.

Touch is a powerful healer for all species. If corals get algae via touch, humans get the good bacteria from touch. All species have same root goals and root strategies for survival.

The rapidly increased pace of human activity over the past few centuries is completely out of synch with the pace of natural evolution on the Earth. It is same as the asteroids falling fro sky, wiping the whole ecosystem. Abrupt changes will impact all llife on Earth - flora and fauna.

But hey, we call the human activity as progress, not same as the destructive asteroids. Asteroids might have thought the same if they had intelligence.
