00joe··on Courtyard Marriott in Times Square is Spying on and Manipulating your Internet
yes, Ghostery (firefox plugin) might stop it also.
00joe··on Google I/O Sells Out in 30 Seconds
I hope you all get chromebooks, hahaha.
00joe··on Scientific Linux, the Great Distro With the Wrong Name
SL has a couple full time employees building it. Also, they publish a lot of info about their build process. Centos doesn't. Sometime their releases are slower.
00joe··on New OpenStreetMap tiles from Stamen: water color, black and white, terrain
I think you can layer data on top of tiles from osm with the openlayers api without licensing issues.
00joe··on New OpenStreetMap tiles from Stamen: water color, black and white, terrain
about 54 TB. But only about 2% of tiles have ever been seen. Each zoom level has 4 times as many tiles as the previous level and zoom level 18 (the highest) doesnt have a lot of data.
00joe··on Zynga CEO responds to Wall Street Journal story
Stock options are a fools game. Equity and cash are the only thing that matter.
00joe··on Moore's law for Solar Energy?
20%? Over 60% of our electricity is consumed when the sun shines. Currently we get less then 1% of our power from solar. Storage will not matter for a very long time.
00joe··on Solar PV rapidly becoming the cheapest option to generate electricity
No tracking system. Here are some average numbers of hours of peak energy a day for a fixed system Portland Or 4.0, Chicago 4.4, Tampa 5.3, San Francisco 5.4

Total hardware costs are currently about $1.75 watt for panels, inverter and hardware. Fed Tax rebate is 30%.

00joe··on Solar PV rapidly becoming the cheapest option to generate electricity
In Tampa FL with optimal tilt and no shade a panel rated at 1 peak watt would generate 5.3 watts a day X 30.4 days a month * 4500w panels = 725 Kw per month
00joe··on Solar PV rapidly becoming the cheapest option to generate electricity
sunelec.com, PV Panels $1.28 Peak watt, Inverter $0.5 watt, Rails and Cables $0.27 watt.

In my area I expect to save .18 cents per year per peak watt.

Prices have been falling at 1-2 cents a week since june.

00joe··on Is Domestically Produced Ethanol Worth the Cost?
Some counterpoints to the article

00joe··on LibreOffice / The Document Foundation needs €50,000. Please donate.
Foundations have quite a good tradition in Germany, and the benefits in terms of taxes, limited liability and international credibility are high. With the German-based model, activities are not limited to one country: the foundation can and will be active worldwide.

In addition, the German model provides a high security and stability, as the foundation's statutes cannot be changed and, therefore, cannot be abused. Setting up a corporation or an association, on the other hand, would expose us to the risk that, if a majority of all stakeholders so decided, the statutes could be changed, even as far as removing charitable purposes. In order to provide safety and stability, not only for our users, adopters, developers and enterprises, but for the whole community, a German-based foundation is ideal.

In addition, we have many active community members in Germany: the roots of the product originally lie here, we expect a lot of support from corporations and governmental bodies, and the adoption rate for free office productivity software is very high.

00joe··on Tell HN: I can't even get a job offering to work for free
Its not all about you. There are a lot of reasons you could have been rejected. Its difficult to say what went wrong. You need to try this ten more times. If you get rejected all ten times try modifying your approach.
00joe··on Executive Leaves Apple After iPhone Antenna Troubles
He did make a comment, however the way he was holding his phone dropped the call.
00joe··on Android Becomes Top Mobile OS In The US
So you think Apple would outsell Android if they licensed their OS, not a chance. If Apple customer's compared features and not style they would be out of business
00joe··on AT&T Gives Up on the iPad 3G Unlimited Data Plan
Whats the big deal, its not like you have flash on these things anyway. The only decent site you can get content from is Itunes. 2G of Itunes product is a lot of $. A little extra for the bandwidth is no big deal.
00joe··on [dead]
Since Apple remotely disabled it and Gizmodo didn't have a license agreement with them couldn't Gizmodo sue Apple for vandalism and destruction of their property?
00joe··on Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
yes really, its set by a 1979 amendment.
00joe··on Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
One reason Texas avoided the housing bubble is the property taxes are very high here. The tax rate is 4.5-5% of value. In California its 1%. Also, interest rates are lower in California, a foreclosure can happen in as little as 120 days which reduces the lenders risk and your interest rate. The result is a lot of carrying costs for investing in residential real estate.
00joe··on Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
cost of living has nothing to do with attracting manufacturing jobs. The lower the labor costs the more jobs you get. Same reason China has more manufacturing that California
00joe··on Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
Texas's per capita income is 20% lower than California's
00joe··on Adobe: “Go Screw Yourself Apple”
Techcrunch says Adobe: “Go Screw Yourself Apple”, but the post was by an individual employee on a personal blog. Please stop posting Techcrunch articles.
00joe··on Steve Jobs Has Just Gone Mad
I've had a couple of close friends and relatives have health issues that almost killed them. Afterwords their personality changed. They became much more negative and harder to be around. The things I have read about Jobs is that he is a health nut. To have the problems he has had might have been a big emotional blow for him.

Since he has come back, things have gotten much worse for partner relations and there is almost a continual barrage of news about Apple jerking someone around. I really think they could do better with a new CEO.

00joe··on Ubuntu switches back to Google as default search engine
A couple of years ago Ubuntu went to Google asking for a revenue sharing deal, Google refused, even though they had done it many times before. Search was going to be Ubuntu's primary income in the netbook space. At the time Google probably thought they owned search. Its amazing what a little competition will do.

I would love to see Firefox and Safari change their default search to Bing (I would still use Google). Who knows, Google might start getting serious about things like privacy.

00joe··on Will jotting down license plates pay the rent?
2 things

1. about 80 red flags of why this is a scam, yet 92,000 affiliates. Just shows how peoples greed will let them ignore the little things.

2. its an amazing combination of crowd-sourcing and network marketing. I can see lots of interesting problems being solved like this in the future.

00joe··on Marketing Lessons from A/B Testing a Homeless Man's Sign
Forget the whole a/b testing thing. The real value of this blog post is that it shows a great way to utilize personal skills to help someone else. That's the real genius, out of the box thinking here.
00joe··on Don't ask venture capitalists for referrals if they say they're not interested.
The article explains why the VC doesn't want to give the referral, but it doesn't explain how it can hurt me to ask. If you have ever sold something, you know, you have to ask a lot of unlikely people for help before you get any.
00joe··on NAT-to-NAT direct connections with no proxy/STUN needed
Ok, so ICMP is easy to turn off. But why couldn't this technique be done over UDP or TCP? The server could send a UDP packet to a known "fake" address and the client could spoof its source address to penetrate the nat.
00joe··on HFCS makes rats fat? A counterpoint.
Page one of the study supports the original claim. Is this blog post just a test to see if we will really read it now?

Per the study...... 3. Results 3.1. Male rats with daily 12-h HFCS access gain more weight in 8 weeks than animals with equal access to sucrose Animals with 12-h 8% HFCS access gained significantlymore weight in 8 weeks than animals with 12-h 10% sucrose access
