Daishiman··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
"Good leadership" depends on whose interests we're talking about. Democracy is about representation, not good leadership.
Daishiman··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Why is it that this a concern to you but it's not a concern when the US and European powers align themselves with Saudi Arabia and Qatar?
Daishiman··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Matheus in this forum you're literally the only person who believes this and who feels that this is worse than Bolsonaro having literally planned a coup.
Daishiman··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Let's do takes for the sake of takes.
Daishiman··on Cerebras Deploys Trillion-Parameter AI Models
Would seem reasonable for hedge funds to devise a pipeline of tools specifically made to be taken advantage of by LLMs that do goal-based strategy at scale.
Daishiman··on When the Term "Heatwave" Is No Longer Enough
Well marketing evidently moves a huge amount of the populance and it requires very few but extremely well-placed phrases and slogans to work so yeah. You just need to move a small fraction of the voting population to shift the political panorama.
Daishiman··on When the Term "Heatwave" Is No Longer Enough
The article has nothing to do with the literal specific meaning of one word and everything to do with how people consume and relate to climate change messaging. That's not "words", and it actually requires a good deal more thinking.
Daishiman··on The lifelong orgasm gap: exploring age's impact on orgasm rates
If anything it shows how little you know about feminism. Feminists have pointed out the issues in education gap and violence since a good 50 years by now, they just don't take it as their most pressing causes.

It's amazing that an activist group that actually shows far more awareness of the systemic issues that affect all genders is being held to an impossibly high standard when no "masculinist" group or whatever non-existant equivalent is out there doesn't even care in the first place.

Daishiman··on When the Term "Heatwave" Is No Longer Enough
"Words are words" are something only a profoundly ignorant person would say.
Daishiman··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
A hotel vs crashing on a couch are so culturally different that it's not really possible to hold them under the same brand.
Daishiman··on Ask HN: Have you observed this trend of building "internal vibe-coding apps"?
Sure, but at least Claude is available to fix the slop instead of needing to depend on people who have gone away a long time ago. ultimately if it's valuable they can invest in someone to come in and build things the right way.
Daishiman··on Qwen3-Coder writes less secure code when told it's for a US persona
What makes you think American providers aren't doing the same?
Daishiman··on Ask HN: Have you observed this trend of building "internal vibe-coding apps"?
This already exists in the form of Excel spreadsheets with macros that go beyond the comprehension of any one person, and so will likely occupy the same niche, with some vibe-coded slop that's deemed useful being assigned to engineers to clean up and maintain.

Honestly, this is a really good step-up for a lot of businesses.

Daishiman··on Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins
Because morons end up using Claude to write down how to plan crimes and then people get up in arms over that.
Daishiman··on Claude reveals ECDSA curve origins
> The idea that you can't reverse engineer things, make things, learn about biology or physics without permission is strange to me. These machines have been trained on the sum intellectual output of humanity, the global intellectual commons, and are being used to close off that commons?

I mean this is the standard of biochem research right now. You can't just order 50 gallons of TNT off Amazon and neither can you get live viruses from a lab just because you want to do research.

Daishiman··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
I am laughing at the fact that people are trying to parse meaning from a username handle.
Daishiman··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
I'm quite happy where I live. Colleagues that are in academics are going to Europe and some are going to China. Software guys are staying home and getting the opportunities to come to them through offshoring.
Daishiman··on Postgres 19 delayed after AI reviewers find more bugs than humans can fix
The article mentioned the exact opposite.
Daishiman··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
If you live in a shithole the US will obviously be an improvement by comparison. But that's not news and ultimately meaningless.

The concern is that smart, productive, capable people now have better alternatives.

Daishiman··on Desire to Move Permanently to U.S. at New Low
Not just that but the people who change their opinion the most are generally those with excellent education and job opportunities elsewhere.
Daishiman··on We are entering a period of overlapping crises
Sure, the difference was that in the past local crises gave way to events that would normally span out to neighboring countries. The level of interconnectedness, as the article points out, means there's nowhere to go and nowhere that's exempt.
Daishiman··on We are entering a period of overlapping crises
It is absolutely true.

It's also true that as the scope of power humanity has over itself and its environment, it equally manages to create ever larger crises, and it seems like we truly are reaching the ecological and environmental limits of what the planet's life support systems can give us before breaking down.

Daishiman··on America didn't lose its rare earth industry, it sold it
Sure but most other systems do not have a a set of motivations that uniquely incentivize short term profit at all costs.
Daishiman··on America didn't lose its rare earth industry, it sold it
But most have not.
Daishiman··on The Dock on Mac, from OS 10 to macOS 27
What apps are document-based nowadays? 90% of people's app use is in browsers and Electron apps that end up being an agglomeration of tabs and documents. And MacOS has objectively horrible window management for apps that run multiple windows.
Daishiman··on China Overtakes U.S. For First Time as Top Spender on R&D in 2024
It's amazing how people think this is true when by every known metric, people who are given a minimally comfortable life almost always end up being far more productive members of society than those who are not.
Daishiman··on SQLAlchemy 2.1.0 Released
I don't disagree that it's tremendously overpowered. You can use SQLModel with FastAPI if you want a more minimal API surface that uses SQLA under the hood. As a user I just don't have to deal with most of its complexity on a day to day basis so it doesn't bother me and I don't think it's a bad end state for a swiss-army knife of a query library.
Daishiman··on SQLAlchemy 2.1.0 Released
They all say that until your business logic is so convoluted that maintaining several dozen SQL queries begets more work than sensible so you end up inventing your own query builder which is fine until you realize you really need business objects so you make up your own ORM and then you realize you needed SQLA or some similar piece of tech all along.

Tale as old as time.

Daishiman··on 500B Tokens Later: Letting AI Agents Decompile a First-Person Shooter
Most software organizations pay for is effectively a SaaS or something where software is a minor part of the artifact and support is where the real money is.
Daishiman··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
The post-Covid offshoring is looking quite a bit different though.
