> how much and what we want available as a society

We as a democratic society should want that everything legal is available.

It is up to parents to take care of what is available to their offspring. Much like any other potential risk behaviours.

And it is up to other democracies to curb the US's continued attempt at pushing their protestant obsession with sexuality onto everyone else.

DoingIsLearning··on 40+ JackOfManyTrades needs advice for job search
> you are not under obligation to disclose each and every experience in your CV,

This is great advice, which I followed as a 40+ coming from another domain who went back to university to retrain. However YMMV, most North America, UK, some countries in Central Europe, are pretty PC (at least at surface level) with regards to rules against age discrimination. However, other job markets like Germany, Switzerland, Austria, expect stuff like CV photos and DoB in your CV header, which makes it harder to ommit stuff because HR people love to jump on timeline 'gaps'.

Your third point is the most important for 40+.

As you age, network becomes far more relevant and job applications less so. Specially now with all the LLM usage both on employer and job applicant sides it is likely a very frustrating numbers game.

DoingIsLearning··on Why Linux is not ready for the desktop, the final edition
> For everyone else, the reason they don't use Linux on their desktop is because it didn't come installed on it.

My experience lines up with this.

Both my elderly parents run Zorin OS on their separate laptops for the past 6 years, they understand as a kind of 'free windows'.

They don't care about the inner workings, they go online, check email, do shopping, make travel arrangements, print a ridiculous amount of paper. And I stopped getting calls because 'the printer is not working'.

DoingIsLearning··on QR-style codes could replace barcodes 'within two years'
As far as I understand, if you return glass into a recycling centre or to waste management anywhere here it will always be for cullet glass.

Bottle washing here only happens if you return the bottles at a supermarket or other retailers, who then return it (unbroken) to the original manufacturer.

DoingIsLearning··on QR-style codes could replace barcodes 'within two years'
> but I haven't seen a recycler want it

Perhaps that is a US problem, in Europe glass recycling is fairly Universal at all recycling centres and most neighbourhood streets have below ground waste containers for glass.

At least in my reality the issue is that Retailers have virtually eliminated glass alternatives from supermarket shelves. Other than beer/wine and some 1.5L juice bottles, pretty much everything else is plastic, even when the same product is also manufactured in glass, it simply does not exist in supermarket shelves.

You have to go to very large distribution centres to actual find glass alternatives for everyday products. So to me turning this into a consumer issue is naive.

DoingIsLearning··on QR-style codes could replace barcodes 'within two years'
> more fuel usage and greenhouse emissions

Again coca-cola can make the full logistical operation EV based (bar maritime) and offset with deploying renewables. If they care.

Glass can be either washed (even more energy saving) or fully recycled, all the time, 100% of the time.

PET :

- can only be recyclable a few N cycles and becomes increasingly brittle when recycled.

- There is no such thing as transparent recycled PET

Those are the two core reasons why none of the major manufacturers actually use recycled PET or use it fractionally (10 to 30% PET, which marketing will spin with 'using (some) plastic from 100% recycled materials')

The sad story about the economics of this is that recycled PET is not nearly good quality enough to be used for packaging leading to it being used in plastic poles or road substrates and further contributing to microplastics in the waterways.

It's a scam through and through.

DoingIsLearning··on QR-style codes could replace barcodes 'within two years'
How is this not moving more responsability and work onto consumers rather than tackling the problem at the root.

Coca-cola had a 2.7B EBTDA last quarter. Marketing needs to stop blowing smoke up people's rears.

If they care about the environment, they can just use glass! Install mega watts of renewables to provide the power for glass recycling. Zero plastic in the environment.

Companies need to stop externalizing their costs into environmental problems and telling people it's their problem for buying it.

DoingIsLearning··on Plasticlist Report – Data on plastic chemicals in Bay Area foods
You point to the membrane as a leakage source, but most RO systems also use flexible hosing in the assembly and from past work in medical devices it seems that flexible hosing is also a huge source of phthalate leakage.

Is that something that is also taken into account in higher end RO systems?

Am I interpreting this correctly that Brita actually works as a limiter for plasticizers in tap water? Specially since tap water plasticizer content can vary by a lot?
DoingIsLearning··on Taxi drivers offer a clue to Alzheimer's risk
Am I interpreting the data correctly in that, whatever protective effect was found on Taxi drivers and Ambulance drivers, was actually aggravated on Ship Captains and Airline Pilots?

My immediate thought went to the negative effect of sleep quality and work schedules, but I would expect the same sleep strain/stress for Ambulance drivers. A lot going on epidemiology wise but interesting study nevertheless.

DoingIsLearning··on Ask HN: Do you backup your Emails?
Personal no. But professional, yes.

Whenever I change jobs I always take a copy of all my emails and keep it in offline storage.

Arguably not always legal/compliant. But both for CYA, learned history, relevant contacts etc. it has had use for me in multiple occasions in the past

DoingIsLearning··on Ghost artists on Spotify
If you are a Spotify user please make an active effort to seek and listen to artists _albums_. Playlist are a worse experience (unless you make them) and only play into Spotify's pocket.

A few key points with albums:

- You are listening to the artists vision/journey. The songs are not played in isolation but as part of a collective arrangement.

- Artists get payed more per play than individual songs.

- Albums don't degrade like playlists which can be changed by users or spotify to inject some newer commercial push.

DoingIsLearning··on MIT study explains why laws are written in an incomprehensible style
> There's been centuries of legal disputes, in both civil and criminal cases, and judges have over time through their rulings have influenced what is the acceptable wording ... When judges render a verdict, it becomes case law, and although that itself is regarded as part of the law, where there's ambiguity, over time, legislators have been prone to abrogate laws with more exact wording.

Anglosphere applies Common Law but that is not the case across the rest of the world. It is very much a 'style' expectation irrespective of an attempt to precision (which it often lacks).

I would even argue that Common law countries follow simpler legal language because of an inherent pragmatism when compared with Civil Law.

If we look at the legal output from countries that directly or indirectly are influenced by old 'cathedra' university heritages (old French, Italian legacy or influence) it is far more convoluted IMO.

DoingIsLearning··on Popeye and Tintin enter the public domain in 2025 along with Faulkner, Hemingway
Crazy how much Walt Disney's lobbying so many years ago had such an impact and irreparable damage to digital content access, as well as, all the TPM nonsense that came after.

We simply normalized users not owning content because of him.

A 25 year window should be more than appropriate for copyright protection.

DoingIsLearning··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
> Completly useless.

Not enterely useless, since you payed a lower retail price on it based on manufacturers projected revenue from ads.

The best way to kill the business model is to buy them for the high end display tech but then keep them offline.

DoingIsLearning··on Dumb TVs deserve a comeback
> Why dumb TV's won't make a comeback --- price.

I'm cool with it provided I can use it as a very high quality HDMI display. Then I just got a nicely discounted product.

My worry is if they demand connectivity in order to work as a display. Or worse come with some kind of LTE transceiver to phone home then we're in trouble.

DoingIsLearning··on Do adults have the skills they need to thrive in a changing world?
> It's really no wonder far-right candidates promising to fix everything are doing well lately.

Many OECD countries would have had a large chunk of the population now +50 yrs old who where born in a time where they physically didn't have access to education and where child labour was normalized.

Secondly, I hear a shockingly high number of University educated Europeans (in historically social-democrat countries) quite simply repeating TT talking points that Trump is a better choice for the 'economy'.

What we are lacking is proper education on human biases, and on identifying and understand how propaganda operates.

DoingIsLearning··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
> You don’t get structural change by extreme singular events.

The word _singular_ is doing a lot of work there.

Historically 'propagande par le fait' has had a massive effect on policy.

The implication that you have to not only focus on EBITDA but also on social responsibility (in a real non-PR way) is ever lasting if this propagates to more than a single occurrence.

Which is why mainstream media and authorities are so worried about controlling the narrative of the events (depicting Brian as a loving father etc.)

DoingIsLearning··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
> Apparently his other social media doesn't link to this YT account.

But according to another comment in the thread YT confirms they removed the fake account AND _three_ real accounts associated with the guy.

Begs the question of why did they remove those? What content was in the real accounts to grant removal?

DoingIsLearning··on What we know about CEO shooting suspect
Fine, confirmed as fake but he also had three real ones, "YouTube on Monday removed three channels belonging to Luigi Mangione ..."

What was the content in those channels and why were they removed?

All other online footprint of this guy is still online (even his github!), what content was there on YT to grant it being removed?

Lack of transparency will just generate more questions and doubt.

I'm really not familiar with the physics of this. But when using your glass, the image is put in a parallax between left and right eye to 'appear' at a distance.

But does this mean that your eyes are focusing on a very nearby plane irrespective of where the image is perceived to be by your brain? As in would this strain your eyesight more?

- Financial difficulties

- Being a single parent
