JKCalhoun··on Alphabet Announces Third Quarter 2026 Results [pdf]
Like others, desperate to make sure they're the next Google.
JKCalhoun··on The Colors of a Soap Film
My physical copy has a single color plate (the image showing the spectrum of the colors of the bubble, of course).
JKCalhoun··on The Colors of a Soap Film
Loved the small book "Soap-Bubbles and the Forces Which Mould Them" [1], [2], [3] by C. V. Boys.

He talks about the colors of soap bubbles (among other things). After reading it I watched a large bubble-sheet exhibit at the Exploratorium in San Francisco with fascination—noting how the colors were different at the top of the film, (where it is thinner) compared with the lower part of the film (where it is thicker).

As the bubble begins to evaporate and get thinner, it eventually becomes colorless (black, I suppose) just before popping.

Aside from the section on color, the whole book is a beautiful example of reasoning, the scientific method, etc. (as though presented to Physics students—but it is nonetheless easy for the layman to follow along).

JKCalhoun··on Radio-tagged Monarch butterflies
An Omaha, Nebraska monarch-stop reporting in.

The wife planted one this year. (Registered, got a little placard to place on a stake.)

We saw a dozen or so cocoons appear around her garden—on plants, on the trim of our house. And then we saw them empty out. The skies too around the neighborhood were frequented by monarchs last month—we'd see them all the time.

Funny how you start to notice a thing (that had always been there to some degree or another) once you start to invest some time and interest in it.

JKCalhoun··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
Blows my mind at how small a thing (the term AI) he instead focuses on.
JKCalhoun··on Show HN: Glider 4.0 Unofficial Web Edition (Mac game port)
This is very cool.

It is the only port (that I am aware of) that brings over the additional Room Editor app that allowed you to create and edit "house" (game) files.

JKCalhoun··on iPhone Duo Teardown
I feel like Apple had to eventually show something in this space (just like VR). With perhaps one or two more revisions I think they'll let the foldable space "go away" in a few years.
JKCalhoun··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
I see it being contradicted (and the contradiction contradicted almost daily).
JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
Agree.

It feels odd that you would point out the little guy when there is kind of this elephant in the room.

You could have just said we need to get money out of politics.

JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
People with wealth in excess of "$X" though might suggest that either 1) our tax code is not progressive enough or 2) that there are loopholes some people are exploiting. For the good of democracy, it should certainly be looked into.
JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
"The wealthy pay the vast majority of taxes in the US by almost every metric."

In a progressive tax system that's the way it is supposed to work. People pay what they can afford to is kind of the point.

Anything less than a progressive tax system means the poor pay more and the rich pay less. Is that what we're advocating for?

JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
"…tally up all the "wealth" periodically, and then "distributing" it…"

Sounds a bit like taxation.

JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
Or you can spend it on elections.
JKCalhoun··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
Because the 0.1% have an also-outsized influence on politics, and in making our world a better place in general (and they repeatedly fail all of us in both cases).
JKCalhoun··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
That article is 9 days old.
JKCalhoun··on Mark Zuckerberg Pushed Meta to Shield Him from California's Proposed Wealth Tax
I'll take your word for it, but I must have missed that.

(I thought it was just archive.today that was untrustworthy—it seems it's also archive.ph and archive.is, and perhaps others. It would be nice if there were a substitute already.)

JKCalhoun··on We are all living inside of an obscure sci-fi film from 1970
"And that's it. Colossus is in charge."

And if you know that the film is based on the first book [1] in a trilogy [2], [3], you might not be surprised to find that by the end of the trilogy, Colossus's words are prophetic.

JKCalhoun··on Jared Kushner Hacked Phone Reveals Secret Negotiations, Millions in Transactions
Me? Not a fan of PHP.

(But I never flag those posts.)

JKCalhoun··on This I Believe (1952)
I believe the same. For this I am called Pollyanna by my family.

(And in fact I did hitchhike by myself from Anchorage, Alaska down to Moses Lake, Washington in my youth…)

JKCalhoun··on Is this the new cyber normal?
Perhaps the web was more secure when it wasn't running anything—just serving up static web pages?
JKCalhoun··on The rise and fall of Jev hype
I suspect the author is treating "hype" as a leading indicator.

(They may be right.)

JKCalhoun··on What shall I teach my son?
"I will teach my children to lie.

They will know it's wrong to be right.

It's the only way they'll ever get paid.

I will teach them to lie."

— Mobius Band Twilight

No, I don't agree with it. But on my most cynical days… I do enjoy the song.

JKCalhoun··on Americans Are Spending More Money to Drive Worse Cars
Also, it feels like an "arms race" where people who are fearful on the road worry about being hit by a vehicle that is larger than their own. So they go big…
JKCalhoun··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
Yeah, so asking.
JKCalhoun··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
Is there a tenbagger in DeepSeek?
JKCalhoun··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
I see the opposite—a few small steps from banning DeepSeek in the U.S. outright.

Could a Great Firewall of the U.S. be far behind?

I'll be pulling down models today…

JKCalhoun··on 8 in 10 Americans oppose live-streaming execution
Why would anyone want to give "the state" power to take life of its citizenry?
JKCalhoun··on Laptop Based on 6502 CPU
Love to see some aluminum frame parts introduced. Not cast aluminum parts—perhaps a machined aluminum deck and bezel. (There are of course places like PCBWay that will CNC metal parts for you.)

It would give the laptop a great deal of structural support and act as a secure place to mount the hinges (for example). Also a convenient surface to perhaps integrate with the heat sinks to pull heat out of the enclosure.

JKCalhoun··on DeepSeek V4.1 Flash 1017 (Max)
Looking ahead, do we think token costs will remain where they are today? Go down? Up?

Your investment in hardware is of course fixed, the token cost amortized over time.

I suppose the other question is, do we think down the road that the models capable of being run locally will improve?
