Larrikin··on What do the next 4000 emoji look like?
Why are they childish? Because they did not exist when you were younger and people younger than you use them? They are used for expression.

Should we remove lol or imho from language as well?

Is replying to someone with ??? incorrect and childish and should instead be a complete sentence when you don't understand their message.

There are constantly people having jokes and sarcasm go over their head with just plain text on this very site.

Music also wasn't better when you were younger. There just came a point where you didn't want to try new things.

Larrikin··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
All generators are supposed to be operated outside, so there should never be a concern about carbon monoxide.

If you are concerned about that, you get solar panels and a battery. You still do not have to worry about losing your means of transportation.

Larrikin··on Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production
Why would that be ideal? I would be worried constantly about if I'm trading electricity in my house for the ability to go somewhere in an emergency. If it's such a real concern you even think about it when buying a car you should have a dedicated device.

Generators have solved this problem. My family used to lose electricity anytime there was a semi serious snow storm. We got a gasoline generator after the second time and it was always sufficient. We never needed to siphon gas from the car either. We later transitioned to a natural gas generator. The lines are all underground and tie into the existing system for the stove and dryer. No car involved.

I think you are presenting this as true, but all the evidence points to the bailout as having no effect. You aren't presenting any counter evidence other than just saying it worked and to wait.
Larrikin··on US Reps Lead Democratic Resolution Opposing A.I. Bubble Bailout for Big Tech

Both sides argument are springing up like weeds all over the various forums in the last couple weeks before a predicted major shift in Congress.

If you have deeply unpopular policies but only 1/3rd of the country is expected to vote, telling everyone their vote won't matter is the best stance to take.

Larrikin··on Genie 4
The Orville show explores this idea, before LLMs became a thing. Simulators become the replacement for movies, but the simulations are still designed by a person (or alien).

The concept feels more like a video game than a movie in the show, but presumably you could program the simulation to happen around you instead of you moving through it.

Larrikin··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
So to fix the system, people should throw up their hands, not vote and just complain about it in the comments instead?

I'll vote in primaries for the candidate that most represents my views and continue to not let perfect be the enemy of good on election day. Lip service and small improvement officials are always much better than officials that negatively target me or my community.

There are people alive today who lived under Jim Crow laws. Is there any argument you would like to make that getting rid of them and enacting the other associated legislation in the 60s was not an advancement?
Larrikin··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
State an actual solution, you're just making a covert both sides argument under the guise of a longer rant.

I love the both siding argument springing up right before election day.
Larrikin··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
All of the pizza chains from my youth A/B tested their ingredients into a weird hill climbing problem. They are all worse tasting and more expensive but despite tasting very differently they are basically equal in how good they taste. You can't really say one is better than the other but they are definitely all worse than they were before.

This is probably possible now. Back when machine learning was all the rage people were using it to identify authors of various anonymous works. It became an introductory project to identify the Federalist Papers authors. Just read in some works, identify patterns, set up tests, and set the LLM into a loop testing whether the output would be predicted to be the author you are trying to impersonate.

Larrikin··on Around a dozen banking apps began specifically permitting GrapheneOS
Why is that so much of a hassle? In the US switching banks is just updating some numbers and reconnecting. The entire process can just be done online. In the US the only annoying part can be older companies that still do the account verification via a deposit and withdrawal, so it takes one whole day instead.

Also I don't think I would actually want it done automatically. Some banks have better saving rates, some banks offer higher interest on checking, some banks are much better for taking cash out internationally, some banks have more ATMs/branches around where I live, etc. I have a few different banks I move money around in.

Larrikin··on Whatever Happened to Fire Escapes
Firefighting in a large city versus a small town I assume are different, but the firefighters I know would never describe themselves as bored. They get paid to spend the majority of their time hanging out with friends, barbecuing, working on their cars, enjoying life, etc for the occasional hugely important and often terrifying life saving firefighting work.

They deploy more often than when I was a kid for EMT type work in place of or as first responder for ambulances. But, none of them would ever describe their day to day as boring.

Larrikin··on U.S. Supreme Court to review 1868 federal ban on home distilling of liquor
Did George Washington actually partake in the hobby or did he make his slaves do it like his famous barbecues until he died because he knew it was wrong?

Washington as an unquestioned justification for anything should never be the argument.
