anotheracctfo··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
Sure, you can go homestead in Alaska. That should reduce demand in your city :)
anotheracctfo··on Builder's Remedy goes into effect in many California cities tomorrow
"I live above a bowling alley, and below another bowling alley"

Rent has gotten so outrageous that this is a good thing now.

anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
This is 100% true for progressing to management. However the OP doesn't want management, which is fine, that's what principals are for. They should just find a good "servant leadership" manager who will get all the BS out of their way, and let them do "their job."
anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
Valve. They're kind of dysfunctional from what I hear.
anotheracctfo··on Low-code is not a cure for overworked IT departments
Oh god no. No please don't let "power-users" anywhere near a Low Code framework. It doesn't take long for them to fuck up and go ask a real developer what is wrong. I've seen things...
anotheracctfo··on Fire Them All; God Will Know His Own
I'm in a public university IT department on the administrative side.

If the professors would like to do admissions, then I encourage them to do so.

If the professors would like to do budgeting, then I encourage them to do so.

If the professors would like to do HR, then I encourage them to do so.

If the professors would like to run the ERP, then I encourage them to do so.

If the professors would like to run the Learning Management System, then I encourage them to do so.

etc etc

Fortunately all of the profs I've spoken to have a brain and understand division of labour. Which is great because I love working with them to build fun IT solutions that make their lives, and the educational experience better! If I wanted to make professor level money I'd work literally anywhere else.

anotheracctfo··on Remotely unlock/start/locate any remotely connected Honda/Nissan [resolved]
A couple weeks ago my block was hit by thieves who got remote entry into a bunch of Toyotas and Hondas. I wonder if that's how they did it.
anotheracctfo··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
I am hyper cognizant of that as a manager. I have to teach my new people not to fear me, because a lot of working class people come from industries where your boss is NOT your friend.
anotheracctfo··on If you (still) work at Twitter and you can code, head to the HQ now
Probably exactly that. Looking for devs who used an if statement instead of a ternary operator. Not realizing that its sometimes really fucking useful to have readable code.

Or the opposite lol, it's all subjective anyways.

anotheracctfo··on FTX used corporate funds to purchase employee homes, new filing shows
It's wild to me that they can basically print counterfeit USD and put it on their SEC filings, and the Treasury is just okay with it.
anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: Corp gives “contractor” benefits, want “employee” obligations, what now?
Sure you can sue them. The employee contractor line is a big part of labour law, and can affect UK mandated legal protections and benefits. The only problem is that a labour lawyer starts at $400/hr. One way to get around this is to band together with other contractors in your organization and pool your money to purchase a lawyer. We typically call this a union. I was high up in my union and signed some very big cheques to lawyers.

Of course that's hard so you should just get a new job.

anotheracctfo··on Managers with a business degree reduce employees' wages, do not increase profit
I got both. Managing a low complexity worker and a high complexity worker requires vastly different styles. Managing a factory production line is very different (down to Left Hand and Right Hand specific tasks!) than managing infinitely configurable software.

Netflix is not a McDonalds, and a McDonalds isn't a Ford assembly plant.

The problem I see is that morons apply the wrong methodology to a business. Typically former 19 year old McDonald's Managers (TM) apply authoritative control to a scrum shop which should be decentralized and delegated by design.

anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: Have you experienced “hiring fraud?”
I mean, yeah? There are very few people who can go straight from my question to the answer. And pausing to collect your thoughts is much better than saying uuuuuuuuuuhhhhhhhh ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm uhhh I ... uhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Camera fuckery notwithstanding

anotheracctfo··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Why not? They need digital soldiers. They farm spec-ops from the best grunts, so this would give them a pool to recruit their information warefare people from.

The Army isn't a business and should never be run as one.

anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: What happened to vanilla HTML/CSS/JS development?
I'm amazed at how many developers need ridiculous complexity to feel like they've accomplished something. I feel that too many people are focused on building resume keywords than solving problems.

If you can solve it in 20 lines of CSS / JS then do it.

anotheracctfo··on JavaScript hydration is a workaround, not a solution
The purpose of more complicated solutions is to prevent devs from becoming bored and leaving.

In my experience, KISS results in the easiest solution to maintain. Then I get a litany of complaints from devs that "this isn't programming" or "this is a dead end to my career" and then they leave. Which paradoxically makes it more difficult to maintain, as I have no maintainers lol.

anotheracctfo··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
The lowest grade I got in my business degree was Information Systems. The reason I got that grade is that I made a case for in-sourcing development based on my personal experience, where we provide services for cheaper than consultants, that aligns with OUR business processes.

The only answer to any and all business IT questions in non-IT companies is to outsource. The reasoning is that it is considered a support activity on Porter's value chain, and as such should be cut cut cut cut cut cut and cut some more.

Hilariously we're also taught to adopt best-of-breed software for ERPs, CRMs, and SCM tools AND CHANGE OUR BUSINESS PROCESSES TO MATCH THE SOFTWARE. You know, like Target did when they moved to Canada, adopted SAP, and ended up failing hard, because their entire competitive advantage came from a custom in-house developed supply chain management tool that beat all of their competitors.

anotheracctfo··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Yeah its been wild seeing my grocery budget max out before the end of the month, despite having a good buffer a year before. YNAB has a great "cover overspending from" feature that got a good workout this year. Fortunately I got a raise so I used that to bump my food budget.

Anybody who doesn't demand a raise in this environment is a fool.

anotheracctfo··on U.S. annual inflation rate drops to 8.5%
Its supposed to measure the effects of inflation on the wealthy, which is why substitutes are important, because it impacts their grocery stocks.

You can starve.

anotheracctfo··on Tesla remotely converts battery pack, cutting 1/3 of range
This is an excellent business model! Its the complete rejection of "Right of first sale" and the entire concept of ownership. Its an inversion of communism where instead of the state owning something and forcing you to rent it, a corporation does.

Its incredibly profitable for the ruling class. Too bad you aren't in it.

anotheracctfo··on Unity is acquiring a company who made a malware installer
This is a complete fantasy. I'm glad you paid attention in your ethics class, but Ben & Jerry's is now owned by Unilever.

Take a look at beloved Costco. Blackstone took over the board and has been putting the screws on their staff, and hard selling customers on Executive Memberships. Their hot dog is on the ropes and we'll see if it remains a loss leader.

As profit growth declines due to market saturation, drastic measures will be taken to keep profit growth high. Workers and customers will be squeezed for next quarter growth.

If you think I'm wrong then please take a look at your favourite fortune 500 company and tell me who is going to pay for this quarter's inflation, the shareholders or the customers?

anotheracctfo··on Teams is killing my Mac every day
It isn't just a Mac issue. I had a i9 / 64GB Ram windows laptop which turned into a furnace when I ran teams. I've been doing a lot of work on the couch over the pandemic and it was too hot to set on my lap.

I have since switched to a M1 macbook and it heats up too, but at least the processor is efficient so it doesn't become uncomfortable.

These issues simply did not happen on either laptop with Zoom. Teams is simply a horribly written piece of crapware. MS should be ashamed of themselves.

anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: Moving from Corporate to Solo Dev?
A self-employed accountant once told me that you take your hourly wage and triple it. 1/3 is your salary, 1/3 is for business expenses and taxes, 1/3 is for when you don't have work.

The lucrative part is when you get more than 1 FTE of work and start hiring employees. Which was my experience working for a small consulting firm. I made decent money with my 1/3 salary, but my bosses made $$$$ because we priced for 1/3 downtime but were constantly flush with work.

Good luck!

anotheracctfo··on Why do people not notice our enormous, prominent, clear and contrasting banner?
I've heard a tinfoil take that this is intentional malicious compliance to cause banner blindness. If you put the warning on everything then you can sell dangerous materials because people won't be checking the label. If you label everything "WARNING: Contains Dihydrogenmonoxide" then people will ignore it when it says "WARNING: Contains Lead"
anotheracctfo··on Nuclear turn green as EU parliament approves new taxonomy
Yeah the OPEC model. Except you can't end it by threatening to "nuke their ass and take their gas."
anotheracctfo··on Job interview questions engineers should ask, but don't
I disagreed at first read, but you're right. These questions are geared for tech interviews in a startup environment, which assumes the candidate can take on risk. So why not grab for the brass ring?

If you want a regular no-risk paycheque then check out government jobs. Runway? Oh yeah we've been collecting taxes for centuries. Product-market fit? Yeah, we have these big guys with badges and guns who will come to your house if you "don't fit." We pay an absolute pittance compared to private, but your job will be there your entire working life.

anotheracctfo··on FDA to order Juul e-cigarettes off U.S. market
Cigarettes are directly marketed to kids and have been for decades. I still remember the DARE posters from high school THAT WERE MADE BY THE TOBACCO INDUSTRY, and were specifically designed to have the opposite effect.

I also remember that a solid quarter of the student population smoked. So good luck with your abstinence policies, they have such a strong track record.

Speaking of which, does abstinence only education result in less teen pregnancy, or more? I can't quite remember.

anotheracctfo··on Leaked Amazon memo warns the company is running out of people to hire
Or you could band together and collectively withhold your labour. These are solved problems, its how the impoverished and exploited ended the gilded age.

Individualization is heavily pushed because capitalism requires fungible labour. But if you band together then capitalism breaks down, because pure ideology runs into the brick wall of reality.

anotheracctfo··on LaMDA is not sentient
Some idiot found the image of Jesus in a slice of toast, so lets ban toast.
anotheracctfo··on Ask HN: How are you dealing with the M1/ARM migration?
Oracle sucks.

I mean in general, but they have also not released ARM instantclient or even an ARM version of Java. I think its crazy that I'm using Microsoft's version of ARM java.

I'm also using Windows 11 ARM in Parallels, which does seamless emulation of Oracle instantclient / Java / PL/SQL Developer. So most of my workflow has not been interrupted.

Still, just another excuse to move to a better database. Now all I have to do is convince our heavily bureaucratic IT department to move away from Oracle. It'll be easy, right?
