badpun··on Ask HN: What's it like working at Google nowadays? Core teams like Search, Ads?
6 man-months is a tiny project by standards of companies like Google.
badpun··on US tech stocks see sharp falls over AI cost fears
A bubble bursting might stop plowing further hundreds of billions into data centers and redirect that money into something with more societal use.
badpun··on Read the letter the FBI sent MLK to try to convince him to kill himself (2014)
Racism is believing that people can be divided into races (spoiler alert: races don't exist, ask a scientist) and, not only that, but also than some of those made up races are better than others.
badpun··on Software may be getting worse, but it used to be horrible
I disabled all animations in iOS. I don't need the distraction anyway. I hope they don't take away this function in future releases..
badpun··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
There are always ambitious people who are not happy to be paid as much as everyone else. In capitalism, they start companies or climb career ladders in existing ones. In communism, they join the communist party, where (since the party has totalitarian power over the country) it's trivial for them to just assign unproportionately large share of the pie to themselves - the difficult part is winning at politics game to attain sufficient power within the party. Basically total dysfunction that has nothing to do with productive society - that's why every single one implementation of communism had poor results and lead to people overthrowing it one way or another.

Uber presumably needs a ton of personel in each country that handles all the driver-related paperwork etc.

Mature businesses like e.g. tire or appliances manufacturers still have some R&D trying to make their products better. However, it may be more for appearances than for actual improvements, just because consumers like to buy a "new fancy model" over a tire or a dishwasher that have been in the market for 20 years (believing the new thing must be better).
badpun··on The Mythical Man-Month in the Age of AI
Also, FPS is a done to death concept that has plenty of repos for LLMs to take snippets from. A better test would be trying to vibe-coding an original game (e.g. something like Miegacure) and see how well LLM does, even when you give it well-defined goal and constraints. My guess is that would fail miserably.
badpun··on Birdwatching rewires the brain and slows cognitive decline
They probably are, but only if you try new games, new maps, new strategies constantly - anything to get your brain plasticity working. Killing monsters in Diablo for 10 years in a row probably hastens the decline if anything.
badpun··on Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans
Dogs are Bayesian thinkers.
badpun··on '500-hour' Order of the Sinking Star is as complex and exhausting as it sounds
Are you saying they aren’t? Then why in CS majors there are usually 5-10 men for every woman?
badpun··on I am so tired of startups doing worse than me
It’s merely what’s wrong with Silicon Valley investment culture. 99% of the world operates more sanely.
badpun··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
The are largely concentrated around Moscow to defend the "brain" of the country, as well as personally Putin himself.
badpun··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Drone units require good eyesight, reflexes, spatial orientation etc. FPS gamers are the best match, not coders.
badpun··on So you think you could be an electrician?
I think the issue in physical work are mainly repeated strain on joints and back. Human body was not built to endure so much repeated strain.
badpun··on Venice’s failed war against Constantinople led to the first bond market
That’s the purpose of the bonds themselves, not bond markets. Government could just as well issue bonds without bond markets existing (so that they cannot be bought or sold).
badpun··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
China has extremely low fertitily rate given that they haven't yet reached the status of a developed country (which Taiwan, SK and Singapore have reached).
badpun··on Japan's book scene is moving from bookstores to libraries
Ancient Rome had libraries already, I'm pretty sure their "ethos" wasn't about inclusivity and safe spaces. Somewhere along the line from then to now, it got subverted.
badpun··on Higher social class predicts increased unethical behavior
That's income, not wealth though. Some wealthy people don't have very high incomes.
badpun··on Sony makes bold claim about game ownership
Pirating is basically unlicensed use.
badpun··on Dwarf Fortress' creator says the industry's in shambles over AI
> The best outcomes come from distributing power as widely as possible to people who are affected the most, aka worker ownership.

Is there any evidence of this claim being true?

badpun··on Dwarf Fortress' creator says the industry's in shambles over AI
Most follow the herd, but there are often noticeable exceptions. See e.g. how Toyota refused to jump on the electric vehicle bandwagon and stuck to hybrid engines. Or Mazda, which didn't even do hybrid.
badpun··on Ask HN: Why is AI civil tech and not military first?
> Military technology will produce innovation in wartime but in peacetime it is a backwater.

The Internet and GPS were directly invented as a military technology with civilian usage allowed only much later. Integrated circuits's invention and development was largely done on military's dime as well.

badpun··on Andreessen Horowitz is investing billions into a bleak future
Machiabelli was a big Florence patriot and was writing his advice specifically to help a prince better govern Florence and hence increase the chance that Florence will not be annihilated in the constant wars that raged on the Italian Peninsula at the time.
badpun··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
Maybe they must be so loud because people wear hearing protection?
badpun··on The Two Factions of C++ (2024)
Lack of support for type-safe containers (need to be hack toghether via macros) and overreliance on macros in general (which are not IDE and debugger friendly) are two aspects of C that are off-putting for majority of people in 2026. That's even assuming you're willing to forego pointer/memory safety.
badpun··on The American sports plutocracy
What's the shakedown?
badpun··on Crime Pays but Botany Doesn't
> I thought that was really interesting (and obviously wouldn't work in other countries).

I don't know about other countries, but in Poland you're just not required to cut down your lawn at all, unless it's a fire hazard (you have a lot of dead and dried up plants).

badpun··on Xbox goes down. You can't play games you own on disc
There's plenty of people for whom handling a PC is difficult. E.g. various popups (windows update, antivirus, microsoft nagging about microsoft account, printer nagging, "disk almost full" nagging, OneDrive file sync nagging etc.) alone are too much for my Mom, whereas she's handling her iPad (for example) just fine. Also, there are issues specific to gaming on PC - every time there's a technical issue with a game (which in itself is never a thing on consoles), the forum recommend installing different version of the video driver. It may or may not work, but it leaves you with an evening of technical troubleshooting instead of gaming.

Not to mention that games on Steam do break, esp. older ones which are no longer actively maintained [1]. I haven't heard of such fails on consoles, probably because they're a much more stable platform.

[1] E.g. Steam's Civ 5 has been breaking for a couple years now, going into low-res video settings and refusing to bring them back up. Why? Who knows! The only thing that seems to work is using "repair files" option in Steam every time that happens.

badpun··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
That's why I'd limit "meddling" to trying to inform and educate the local population. They don't have access to news (due to state censorship, the people are few propagandistic lies instead), at the very least foreign power can try and provide that, like they did with "Radio Free Europe" during the Cold War.
