bakli··on I built a faster Notion in Rust
Like Obsidian?
bakli··on Socialism when I buy, Capitalism when I sell
Haha, yes!
bakli··on Socialism when I buy, Capitalism when I sell
I am guessing socialism, because that's the context it was replied in
bakli··on Socialism when I buy, Capitalism when I sell
Ah my bad. I was mostly talking about people wanting govt to intervene with prices of things they're buying (employee time, hospital visit, google play store). Apologies, english isn't my first language.
bakli··on Microsoft's war on plain text email in open source
The verge article paints a different picture, which I kind of agreed with (as someone who has grown as a developer in last 5-10 years). But then again, I haven't contributed to Linux so it might be a bad thing. FWIW, the problem with email clients seem to be with Google and Apple. My Outlook mail client handles the text email very well!
bakli··on Show HN: An iPhone app that lets you pick colors and identify PANTONE colors
Been using this for a month, the app is very well designed, and $5 is nothing compared to joy I get by collecting colours during commute and sharing the exact code when I am trying to design with physical world as an inspiration.
bakli··on Why the Amazon Basics Keyboard Is My Favorite Keyboard
I don't even remember why scroll lock exists
bakli··on WeWork Isn’t a Tech Company
Aren't any kind of financial products, insurance tech then? You can theoretically sell them with a couple of clicks.
bakli··on HTML-Based Indented Markup Language for Ruby
Won't be able to use it productively without support from Sublime Text :(
bakli··on It doesn't have to be crazy at work
VC will not participate in the next round, or vote favourably with founders in next board meeting, or spread false news about work ethics or some other crap, which can lead to a down round. Have seen all the three happen.
bakli··on Tech Giants Spend $80B to Make Sure No One Else Can Compete
I've lately seen myself using the !g flag for a lot of my searches because it seems inevitable when DDG results don't match up.
bakli··on Ask HN: What are some of the simplest software businesses that exist?
No, mostly devs who have been burned by bad certs, and devs who's boss bought a certificate and now doesn't remind devs when they get a "reminder" to renew.
bakli··on Ask HN: What are some of the simplest software businesses that exist?
I made https://monitorcertificates.com from this simple script - https://hackernoon.com/monitor-your-https-certificate-expiry...

It reminds you when your certificates are due for renewal, or if they have been configured incorrectly.

bakli··on Show HN: Static JSON Hosting Built with Crystal and Amber
So I have been a Rubyist for most of my professional life and I was looking to build a static JSON hosting service when I explored Crystal and Amber and within two days of picking it up, had deployed it to production.

Let's see if Hacker News traffic can bring the $5/mo server down.

bakli··on Designing a RESTful Web API
I wonder how much of this is already supported by framework (specifically thinking about Rails). Things like ETag caching and Options requests look like they should be handled for you.
bakli··on TeaHub: An open source alternative to GitHub
Is it going to be like GitLab?
bakli··on Why founders need hobbies
Yes, I am. But from a Youtube channel called "Hoffman Academy". It's aimed at kids below 15, but I like it.
bakli··on Why founders need hobbies
I've recently (since about 5 months) started learning Piano (or rather, keyboard) and I've looked forward to playing it everyday. It's relaxing and helps me reduce the stress. Plus, it helps me get out of my comfort zone and give me wonderful new perspective on things.

And for the past 2 months, I am also taking tennis lessons, and they've had unexpected positive influences on my life. I am waking early everyday to play, I've improved my stamina, and I get a solid sleep at the end of the day because physical activity tires out over the day and you easily sleep.

10/10 would recommend hobbies to all.

bakli··on Smugmug Acquires Flickr
1. Pinboard charges money for their product and eventually buys former free-product competitor Delicious.

2. Smugmug charges money for their product and eventually buys free-product competitor Flickr.

Charging customers for your service really does help you win in the long run.

bakli··on All of Oculus’s Rift headsets have stopped working due to an expired certificate
There are still chances of Human error here as it's very difficult to automate issuing new certificates (unless you're using Let's Encrypt, which they are not).
bakli··on Show HN: More feedback for Show HN stories
The problem that I see here is that development.kitchen needs quality traffic to provide that feedback, which sounds like the most difficult part of running this service.
bakli··on Ask HN: What non-work task have you automated?
You can maybe add a glitch repo to make it easier to get started.
bakli··on Sublime Text 3.0
It needs to provide you with just enough productivity to help you work for 2 extra hours, and it'll have paid for itself. $80 is peanuts for this.
bakli··on Explaining React's license
Does anyone have experience with https://preactjs.com/? Is it really the same (component wise)?
bakli··on JavaScript for People Who Hate JavaScript
Is that where Ruby took it from?
bakli··on Ask HN: What tasks do you automate?
I've written a script which helps me copy-paste files from their folders in Material Design image library to my android project. This saves me at least 4 copy paste, and then renaming operations.
bakli··on Ask HN: What is your best method to learn new things?
What I typically do is create something, then try to teach how to make that something to other people. In person is good, but tough. Screencasts and blogs are great for this.

While teaching, you really get sudden moments of clarity as to why something is like it is, or why you had to do it this way.

bakli··on Web fonts, boy, I don't know
I think you're used to the developed world. Here in India, most of the places (except big cities) only get 2G. 3G towers are being laid and will probably be operational in 2-3 years.
bakli··on HN censored Marco Arment?
Looks like even this thread has been silenced.
bakli··on Mumbai call centre scam: ‘Nothing's wrong in duping rich Americans’
> really cute

You americans. Sigh
