I mean I'm not going to make a chrome extension and install it and update it every time hn changes or something breaks and update it and shit. For a site I often go years without looking at. I'll just be vaguely annoyed that a super popular website can't be bothered to add really basic usability features.
binary0010··on Is this the new cyber normal?
Yeah they are pretty bad at it still, latest models tried to ship a basic SQL injection flaw. Was also happy to build out an xss flawed module end-to-end. Definitely have to keep a close eye on it.

My vibe code friends have pretty much infinite security issues. Don't even have basic data modeling at client-server boundaries or anything. Also had Google analytics embed that read and saved everyone's credit card details as clear text in analytics.

Seems to make pretty much infinite mistakes if you don't take care and tell it what not to do or how to build certain features.

I'm surprised hn doesn't have an extremely basic filtering system for this kind of thing.
binary0010··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
As a power user of Photoshop, I will say yes, most people use about 3-10 features that adobe offers.

But there are thousands of free tools for those people already, the point is this guy is saying he cloned the entirety of the adobe creative suite with vibe coding in a week. That's not true. He made a bunch of simple and buggy "creative suite flavored" apps. That's a completely different thing than what he claims.

binary0010··on What ArtCraft's Vibe-Coded Apps Say About Adobe
Really?

I tried the Photoshop one when they promoted it a few days ago here. I loaded up one of the client projects I'm working on right now and I could barely move the document or do anything it was so laggy and every single button/feature I tried to use had some kind of bug.

Maybe they've fixed everything in 2 days but I kind of doubt it.

binary0010··on The problem is not the AI code, but nobody knows anything anymore
Of course that's what people are complaining about...?
binary0010··on There is more to code review than (automatable) detection
What makes you think so? It's not my experience, so I'd like to hear what kind of software you work with/teams and what is leading you to understand that code doesn't need review.
binary0010··on One Month Without AI
Might be the type of projects you are working on and how much you care about performance and code quality.

Working on more complex, logic heavy projects with strong performance needs I find the models to be useful but certainly not 'one shot' on pretty much anything. And often incredibly frustrating and genuinely bad code that collapses performance and bloats systems - like what a really bad junior might write.

When I'm working on large standard crud web projects with already decent architecture and a good harness and skills, honestly they work pretty well a lot of the times, the code looks good, does what it needs and fits in with the architectural style.

I really think a lot of hn people just write simple repetitive software, and a small portion works on complex, weird, dense, and novel'ish logic projects. The two obviously don't have the same experiences.

binary0010··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
The original posters were better than any of the mockups.

Not because they looked good, but because they used a design language that "at-a-glance" said what the event was. Sure, the designers republic/etc looked less commonplace, but if I was looking for a fun local faire I would absolutely never notice those posters and if I went i'd assume it was a completely different type of event than it is (e.g. some sort of modern art faire).

Every one of those posters didn't fit the medium idea at all (local faire event) except the child's drawing one could maybe pass.

In fact I can almost guarantee that all the posters in this article would perform worse than the originals if you were to test them on the street or in a facebook group.

If you are an actual production/commercial designer, your first goal is to understand what the clientele wants and converts, secondarily make it beautiful.

This failed both, zero understanding of the purpose of commercial art (to speak to the actual clientele and bring in more people) and ugly within their own design language (but yes, less common).

Would have been interesting to try and make designs that actually make sense for this product AND are a bit less generic.

binary0010··on Reverse engineering my e-scooter and rewriting the firmware in Rust
I'd be pretty careful with this kind of thing. My friend vibe coded something similar and it had some very unexpected real world bugs like instantly locking the engine, cranking the engine to 100 in a second and burning the motor out, etc. So something like an escooter that you might ride across a busy road may not be the best use of vibe coding.
binary0010··on Measuring the sloppiness of code
I just setup a large refactor with Astra and was feeling super lazy and let it mostly do it without my usual extreme micro managing.

The refactor ended up adding 22,000 loc.

I went in there and quickly read through it, laughed my ass off. Reverted the work tree. Micromanaged a new refactor. Net lines of code for something really elegant and easy to reason about was -3k loc in the project.

In case you are wondering why vibe coders are doing 30k loc a day, this is why.

binary0010··on The same nine streaming subscriptions cost $702/year more than in 2021
Interesting, as someone who started making sites on geocities I don't find this anything the same. I remember learning tons about weird little niche hobbies and making little learning sites and stuff with my own brand of weird Photoshop graphics.

An llm making the exact same layouts for everyone with obviously zero input from anyone who cares seems absolutely nothing like the old geocities days.

binary0010··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Americans do not care about biklanes or modifying their cities in that way, they want driverless cars and more large multilane highways/roads so that's what we will get.

Americans don't like walking/biking and love cars.

It's not really learned helplessness it's just what the vast majority of our country wants.

Remember the majority voters voted someone in who specifically campaigned on getting out of any climate change agreements and to bring back coal mining.

binary0010··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
Yeah, there's a woman who is quite old and has a severe disability who drives regularly through our neighborhood who's car every few weeks has a new giant dent, missing fender, broken windshield, etc.

It's sad we don't have a better way for people in these situations to do what they need without driving. It will be incredible to have autonomous driving just for older and or disabled drivers like this.

binary0010··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
Typically here's how it worked:

Company creates a free core product, possibly open source, etc.

Company creates rich help docs and other useful resources.

Customers who use their core free product are frequently engaged with the company and it's helpful resources.

Said company offers additional services such as coursework, cloud services, analytics, etc.

Since customer knows and trusts the core free product, and knows the company is trustworthy, they may be inclined to purchase something.

Now, few coders use these learning resources (ai fetches it for them), they do not know anything about the company and they never engage with the company to see their additional offerings.

Therefore the company now has to advertise by spending heavily on Google/meta/etc. to a cold audience that doesn't even know who they are, because everyone using their system/sdk/library/etc. doesn't know anything about them because ai just steals all their resources and regurgitates it to the coder.

binary0010··on GPT-6 Astra, looped transformers, and hidden reasoning
Disagree completely. I started using Astra from Sol the day it was released, and was a virtually imperceptable difference and made lots of mistakes and shit architecture decisions from day 1 of release.
binary0010··on Investing in mothers? The long-run impact of a universal child care
Agreed, the mother and father should take off from the work force for 18 years to raise their kids and not have to earn a taxable income.
binary0010··on Shopify acquires Tailwind
They had a very successful economic mechanism design for many years. It's one that thousands of businesses have relied on for decades. Create great free product, create rich tutorials and docs, people look them up and you can sell variety of services from there.

Then ai companies stole the data, put a $20 pricetag on it and wiped out all those businesses essentially overnight.

binary0010··on No country for mediocre mathematicians
It's an awesome profession for those of us who love it.

Tbf coding with ai is still super fun though. I am hoping that engs who hate it like you will finally get kicked out as productivity increases from ai and it will finally go back to just us nerds.

It's kinda soul-sucking being around all you guys that just hate this work, please get out and go do farming or something lol.

binary0010··on No country for mediocre mathematicians
Yeah seems like most programmers just do it for the money. I imagine only like 20% of us do it just because we enjoy it.
binary0010··on Software Engineering fundamentals matter more
Damn, you think Ikea furniture is great?

Useful, or passable, sure. Great though?

"The only thing it lacks is weight." You must be being a bit hyperbolic no? Have you ever looked at artisanal/quality goods in comparison to IKEA? You can't see any quality difference?

binary0010··on WorldClaw Agentic 3D open-world generation at scale
So a website AlphoPolis, awarded a cheap online romance manga some sort of award because it got a lot of likes on social media?

My Unassuming Skill, 'Tidying Up,' is the Strongest! ~A Corporate Slave Office Lady Accidentally Reforms a Country in Another World, and Now She's Doted on by the Knight Commander and His Majesty the Emperor!?~"

I guess I thought you were talking about real awards for great literature not webtoon style romance manga slop.

binary0010··on WorldClaw Agentic 3D open-world generation at scale
I'd actually be curious to read an award winning ai book, all the ai books/interactive story generators I've tried have been... Ok at best... Do you know what novels have been written by ai and award winning?
binary0010··on Don't be a meat proxy
Whenever people compare ai to a one real world tool always surprises me tbh.

The only equivalent tool in wood working would be a robot that can build an entire table from scratch and you just sit there and tell it what to do and what kinda table you want and watch it autonomously build everything.

1 saw type is not really even remotely equivalent to what ai is to software.

Just one shot in Claude if you have it or deepseek flash for free.
binary0010··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
I don't get it? I use the open weights deepseek on opencode Go hosted in the us/etc.

What are the mental loops here?

I would genuinely like to know if I'm missing something.

binary0010··on Mixing Visual and Textual Code
I don't know, my vibe coder friends always talk about wanting a visual programming language so they can understand the systems they make.

So I feel like your last sentence doesn't really track - yes they are like you , just telling specifications to the machine, but they can struggle for hours trying to get those specific instructions right because they can't understand what their systems are doing.

binary0010··on Anthropic says Alibaba illicitly extracted Claude AI model capabilities
I think most of us know why they're doing it. We are just very pleased with it regardless.

1. I get great products for nearly free 2. Anthropic/openai/etc will hopefully be destroyed since they stole everyone's work and are trying to capitalize on pure theft.

Win-win. The why of it is not really that relevant.

binary0010··on Show HN: I built 80 mini-games using Fable before it was shut down
You found these fun? As I can't imagine finding them fun. Can I ask, how long did you play? How often would you see yourself returning to this site?
binary0010··on Show HN: I built 80 mini-games using Fable before it was shut down
I have some friends like this, always churning out low effort slop and trying to market it, for it to always fail and them getting depressed and trying again a month later.

I don't get it. It's like they're always excited that they found the magic infinite money glitch in the system.
