My name is John. I am a programmer in Oregon

blueside··on Tesla Roadster
that's interesting. we have both ICE and EV and would never think of using the ICE over the EV for long trips, that's primarily the reason we keep the ICE vehicle.
blueside··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
i have been trying several open source models for the last few years. running qwen 3.6 27b on my 4090 is the first local llm i have used that made me start to second question if anthropic and openai are actually worth the (already) insane valuations.

don't get me wrong, the frontier models are leaps and bounds ahead of what qwen/kimikgemma are doing - but i don't need to drive a ferrari to the grocery store everytime either.

blueside··on Tell HN: I'm tired of AI-generated answers
Is prefixing your searches with "before:2024" the new "reddit" of google searches?

I have certainly found myself using this prefix a lot lately for certain topics. I use AI a lot for researching, but sometimes I just want to really read something written by a human as it sinks in much better

blueside··on Cybersec is a thankless job: expanding workload and shrinking pay packet
Cybersecurity certainly makes money. The good ones make a lot. I mean a lot.

But if you think you can just study for a year and get some security certificates and call it a day, you're going to be sorely disappointed in the compensation.

blueside··on Folk are getting dangerously attached to AI that always tells them they're right
More often than not, when I see "That's it, that's the smoking gun!" I know it's time to stop and try again.
blueside··on What I learned about deploying AV1 from two deployers
I started to convert a lot of my content in AV1 until I realized that my Nvidia Shield devices won't play AV1. My $30 firestick will play them but I do really prefer the Shield. I guess I'll wait it out and hope for a new Shield (it's been 2019 since Nvidia released one) but i'm not going to hold my breath.
blueside··on How I use every Claude Code feature
The users review the output
blueside··on John Carmack on mutable variables
if this guys learns enough, who knows, he may have a future in programming!
blueside··on Claude Code on the web
As we all know here, if the the title of this post was about Codex on the web, the top comment would have been about using Claude instead.

YMMV, but this definitely doesn't track with everything I've been seeing and hearing, which is that Codex is inferior to Claude on almost every measure.

blueside··on Andrej Karpathy – It will take a decade to work through the issues with agents
LLMs have continually taught me that we have vastly overestimated human intelligence
blueside··on Demand for human radiologists is at an all-time high
only 2 people (engineer and conductor) for an entire train that is over a mile long seems about right to me though
blueside··on The History of F1 Design
Agreed, I couldn't believe they skipped the RB19
blueside··on The History of F1 Design
F1 has never been the same for me since they got rid of the engine sound, I miss it so much
blueside··on Tesla protests gain momentum while the hate is dividing Tesla owners
There is no question that Tesla helped accelerate EV adoption in China but BYD's significant battery R&D was already underway and would have happened with or without Elon
blueside··on US Justice Department to seek breakup of Live Nation-Ticketmaster
And it's the promoters, on behalf of the artists, who helped secure all those exclusive deals.

Taylor Swift didn't become a billionaire because of Ticketmaster fees.

blueside··on My favorite Vim oneliners for text manipulation
`g ctrl-g` will do it, but i can barely remember that, so i end up doing `!wc %`
blueside··on Amazon will require employees return to the office 3 days a week
Of course data was used, but you may have the order of operations wrong; execs often make the decision before the data.
blueside··on Ask HN: Given AI advancements, is a master’s degree in CS worthless?
Given the nature of programmers, I think the bigger threat is that AI makes the jobs so mind numbingly boring and unchallenging that they quit before AI gets the chance to replace them.
blueside··on Paul Le Roux is Satoshi?
It doesn't impress me now but it was the first exposure I had to see Excel being used fluently. I later learned that it was very common in the world of finance and nothing exactly impressive. It's like how I impress somebody with my mediocre sql skills until they see a real dba in action.
blueside··on Paul Le Roux is Satoshi?
Shkreli is live streaming this right now and somebody on his voice chat just said to him "No offense Martin, but you're probably the last person I would go to if I had incontrovertible evidence of Satoshi's identity"

For all the horrendous shit that this Shkreli guy is known for, I always think of his Microsoft Excel skills first.

blueside··on The longest ever flight was 64 days in a Cessna 172 (2021)
Pilots are truly some of the craziest people around. Just last summer, a guy flew a Cessna 172 from California to Hawaii.

blueside··on How I Started to See Trees as Smart
And maybe they are smarter than humans - they are playing the long game. They know they will still be here after humans wipe themselves out
blueside··on When programming books are wrong
I think this is one of the better lists out there. I own almost all of the books in this list.

But don't get your hopes up too much. I'm still a lousy programmer.

blueside··on Interview questions to ask your interviewer
Was he sent by Mitch and Murray?
blueside··on Laravel 9
for $199, you'd think Nova would be mobile friendly. Maybe this has changed? When we tried it last year, we were quite shocked it had no responsive design support.
blueside··on Tell HN: AWS appears to be down again
The vehement defenders of AWS are starting to remind me of the cryptobros
blueside··on Ask HN: I've lost faith in myself as a developer, how do I get it back?
I had a CTO in your same situation. His remedy was to schedule more meetings.
blueside··on AWS us-east-1 outage
I was currently in the process of buying some tickets on Ticketmaster and the entire presale event had to be postponed for at least 4 hours due to this AWS outage.

I'm not complaining, I enjoyed the nostaliga - sometimes the web still feels like the late 90s

blueside··on Netflix's “Love Is Blind” Wants Unpaid Photographer for Five Weddings
Halftime performers aren't paid for their performances at the Super Bowl, but at least the NFL does foot the cost for all their expenses.
blueside··on Documents show Amazon is aware drivers pee in bottles and even defecate enroute
Aside from the obvious reasons, surely some health authorities would have a problem with a company that knowingly has their employees "relieving themselves" and not washing their hands before handling the packages?
