bradhoffman··on Room temperature, ambient pressure superconductivity – this time for real?
Can someone explain why this is a big deal? The author cites that it doesn't need an explanation, but I definitely need one lol.
bradhoffman··on Guthib
Yes
bradhoffman··on Writing a document database from scratch in Go: Lucene-like filters and indexes
I’ll be anxiously awaiting your “from scratch” tutorials :)

Edit: not facetious. I very much enjoy reading your blog posts and HN comments.

bradhoffman··on Why does my diet soda taste off? Aspartame hydrolysis
Similar topic, but after having COVID and losing my taste and smell for a few weeks, all carbonated sodas "taste off" for me. I've talked to a few people who have had similar experiences and after a year later, all of my regular Cokes still taste off :/
bradhoffman··on Sleep quality and consistency associated with better academic performance (2019)
What was your experimentation process like? I am in bed for 9-10 hours a night but only 3-5% of my sleep is deep. It’s awfully frustrating because of mood swings and inability to focus. I’ve been trying for a couple years now, but can’t nail anything down.
bradhoffman··on The Fourth of July
Me too.
bradhoffman··on Ask HN: Which configuration management software would/should you use in 2020?
What sort of stack do you all use then to manage these clusters? Have you found any solutions to your conflicts?
bradhoffman··on Alphabet in bid to buy Fitbit
I’m in the same boat. Supposedly Apple is working on native sleep tracking. Once that is the case, then I’ll switch over from Fitbit.
bradhoffman··on The effect of meditation on brain structure (2012)
Do you have a specific philosopher or type of philosophy that you think contributed most to the better control of your emotions?
bradhoffman··on Depression, anxiety rising among U.S. college students
Do you have any recommendations on sources when I can read more about your viewpoint? I craving some inner peace after a month of almost constant fear and anxiety.
bradhoffman··on Alternate Day Fasting Improves Physiological and Molecular Markers of Aging [pdf]
Lifting specifically, or any sort of physical activity? I’ve been running and IF for the past month in order to cut my BF %. I was at about 16%, but I’d like to get down to 12%.
bradhoffman··on I completed Ultimate Go, took good notes and commented directly on source code
This is the first time I've been introduced the concept of a Developer Roadmap, and I love it! Thank you so much for sharing and linking your sources as well! I am definitely going to do this.
bradhoffman··on Being Bored Is Good
So how do you keep yourself from become a "phone zombie"? Have you gone as far as to get rid of your smart phone? That is one thing I've heavily considered, but Spotify, Navigation, and High-quality photos are too hard to pass on.
bradhoffman··on Being Bored Is Good
This is a topic I've been pondering lately. Even looking around the internet for technical information/assistance has become harder due to all of the information that is now out there. How can we find sources or information that are truly meaningful and provide great value, rather than just mediocre or non at all?
bradhoffman··on Tourist's lucky guess cracks safe code on first try
Hahah I really appreciate the effort you put in with that
bradhoffman··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
So what form of Mg are you taking?
bradhoffman··on Magnesium and major depression (2011)
I am interested in hearing more. Did you try Mg with the intent of grinding your teeth less?
bradhoffman··on Ask HN: Database Design Materials?
Thank you so much!!
bradhoffman··on Flutter: a Portable UI Framework for Mobile, Web, Embedded, and Desktop
I have not. I didn’t want to put the time into learning the .NET stack and C# because I am from a .NET town and did not want to get stuck here. What're your thoughts on it?
bradhoffman··on Flutter: a Portable UI Framework for Mobile, Web, Embedded, and Desktop
I’ve given Flutter a try with one of my client’s apps, and in some cases, it’s obviously better than native development. Mainly because you can develop for both platforms. I’d be curious to hear where other developers think Flutter is a good framework to use instead of developing native code.
bradhoffman··on The MacBook keyboard fiasco is way worse than Apple thinks
I know this article highlights the problems with 2018+ keywords, but even my 2016 Macbook, which is one of the first with the butterfly mechanisms, has given me plenty of problems: keys sticking, keys not pressing without a tremendous amount of force, double printing characters, etc.

It is frustrating because I love macOS, but having keyboard problems makes me reluctant to get another Macbook in the future.

bradhoffman··on Ask HN: Who wants to be hired? (April 2019)
Location: Louisville, KY

Remote: Yes.

Willing to relocate: Yes.

Technologies: iOS, NodeJS+Express, Golang, Flutter, Python, MongoDB.

Résumé/CV: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brad-hoffman/

Email: bradleydavidhoffman@gmail.com

I am currently finishing my Master's in CS, and am looking for an opportunity upon returning from my internship in Germany this summer. I am willing to work anywhere, on most projects, with most technologies as long as there are people who are willing to help me become a better developer.

bradhoffman··on Working for a startup makes less sense, unless you are into the mission
That was an incredible response. Thank you so much for sharing your advice!
bradhoffman··on Ask HN: PhD in the UK or US?
Kind of curious about your position as I am in the same boat. Have you done any research while in your Master’s? If so, what sort of topics have you written about?
bradhoffman··on The lost art of concentration: being distracted in a digital world
Yes, I think it's weird. Both because you notice it and because it is happening. I feel your frustrations with this hyper-connected life because this certainly feels like an addiction. I've worked through deleting social media. I've deleted apps off my phone. I've moved my phone outside of my bedroom. All of it seems to help a small amount, but not enough to keep me from moving to something else. Throwing up my hands and leaving seems to be a good solution as well, but not the whole world or my job, just the digital world, as much as I reasonably can. I miss having the ability to focus and remember, and I feel as if the only way I can accomplish my goals is to regain those skills.
bradhoffman··on A2Z: A computer designed and built from scratch. Custom CPU on FPGA (2017)
Any recommended resources for getting into FPGA development? I've always been interested, but don't know where to start.
bradhoffman··on Just Read the Book Already
So what I am hearing here is that practicing reading will help develop that skill of deep reading? I remember in High School when I used to run through my History textbooks and loving the process, remembering most everything I encountered. Now (5 years later), I feel this block in my mind that prevents me from going deep on those topics. It's hard to describe, but it feels like the material isn't being absorbed... Somehow it's getting stuck in my short-term memory and not making it much further unless I really study the material.
bradhoffman··on A PhD should be about improving society, not chasing academic kudos
What if the research options available are not something you're too interested in? I had a professor tell me I could work with him, but he said I had to work on what he has decided. That doesn't seem very attractive to me.
bradhoffman··on A PhD should be about improving society, not chasing academic kudos
I choose to take the thesis route, but I still have 27 hours of coursework to complete as well. My goal was to have 2-3 publications over the next year, but I am not sure how feasible it is. I am in the middle of determining a route for my research right now. Leaning towards AI, but also enjoy Operating Systems, Networking, and Security.
bradhoffman··on A PhD should be about improving society, not chasing academic kudos
My graduate degree is already paid for.
