breakyerself··on The Great American Rascal: Tom Sawyer at 150
I loved Mark Twain when I was a kid. Read Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn multiple times. I didn't even consider reading it to my kid when she was younger. Wasn't a good way to handle all the N words.
breakyerself··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Rooftop solar and grid scale solar farms are two completely different things. Rooftop solar requires a custom install for every home. Solar farms can leverage economies of scale to drive costs lower and lower.
breakyerself··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
The cheaper solar gets the more of a gold rush there has been to develop projects/technologies that take advantage.
breakyerself··on Meta strikes deal with Zuckerberg to protect him from California wealth tax
They're ruining fucking everything. Their impact on the environment is massively outsized. Their influence over politics has allowed them to rewrite tax codes so they pay lower taxes than people who actually work for a living while government contracts and subsidies increase their profits all the time. Their ownership of old and new media manufactures consent for all of this and more.

But yeah I'm entitled because I'm sick of living in a world designed for an elite few. I didn't say give me their money did I?

Thank God. The Amazon gets to borrow a little more time.

Ok do you want to share any interesting ideas the method produced?
breakyerself··on Meta strikes deal with Zuckerberg to protect him from California wealth tax
Because it's selfish and entitled?
breakyerself··on Meta strikes deal with Zuckerberg to protect him from California wealth tax
This is some of the most embarrassing shit ever. Man with more money than God is too selfish to pay some taxes. Needs giant corporation to give him even more money to keep him from throwing a fit and moving away from where his job is that made him unimaginably rich. The entitlement of these billionaires is boundless. Take all their fucking money. They don't deserve it.
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
The BYD Seagull costs $10,150. If there wasn't tarrifs on China EVs would be significantly cheaper. The cost of batteries has been decreasing exponentially just like the cost of solar. Electric tractor trailers are already on the road. Your pessimism about electric heavy machinery is misplaced.

From my perspective it's like you're looking at the market for telephones in 2004 and remarking that most phones are landlines and most portable phones are flip phones and therefore you don't see a future for smartphones.

Solar and wind are cheaper than any other form of electricity in history. (Often even when paired with a storage facility) The fact that it doesn't always shine or blow when needed is driving massive investment into storage technology. The world is changing rapidly. You're not paying attention.

breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
None of this requires fossil fuels and small rural villages in poor countries are never going to get electricity if they have to wait for large power plants and long distance transmission lines to be built. It makes far more sense for a village to have a solar farm, a battery bank and a small local grid.
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
I didn't know that. Maybe someone could invent a device to convert PV electrons into coal electrons.
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
That would be dumb of them to add one of the most expensive forms of energy
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Unfortunately the party that claims government can't solve problems can point to the failures they create when they get power to prove their thesis.
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
This is like assuming people in africa need telephone lines strewn to every home in order to have telecommunications. The developing world doesn't need oil. It needs solar panels and ever cheaper batteries.
breakyerself··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Meat isn't a health food. Most Americans eat an unhealthy amount of meat. Especially red meat. You could probably eat half as much meat and not be in any danger of not getting enough macro nutrients.

I'd argue FDR was a populist. It just depends on what kind of populism and to what end.

breakyerself··on Scientists Create a New Form of Ice at More Than 2000°C
There's an AIDs drug that no longer exists because of an isomorph of the drug compound that formed and spread making it so the original compound couldn't be made anymore.
breakyerself··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
When you find yourself stuck in a hole the first step to solving the problem is to stop digging. We're still digging at a superhuman speed. Meanwhile here you are talking about how you aren't worried because ladder building technology is really coming along, but nobody wants to talk about ladders.
breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
I don't think it's his responsibility, but that was the outcome. I would say most of the responsibility lies with the fossil fuel industry and their PR agencies who funded propaganda that took advantage of the situation.
breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
In that same time period we discovered global warming and ocean acidification as well as developed better ways of getting power.

The only downside we've discovered for having an accepting immigration policy is xenophobic backlash.

I don't know what point you're trying to make with that article. Less immigrants is causing hardship for their higher-ed system. How does that make your point?

breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
I think Al Gore did more harm than good. He made himself the face of global warming and it helped spark a partisan backlash. There was a time when Republicans were not particularly skeptical of global warming. That shifted as climate change and Al Gore became more and more synonymous in the public consciousness.
breakyerself··on Climate change is strengthening El Niño, coral records suggest
For decades the US has managed to be the most powerful economy in the world while taking in tons of these immigrants. Rejecting them is likely to have a negative impact. Xenophobia comes at a cost.
breakyerself··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Do not conflate fossil fuels with all petroleum products. With concern to global warming we are primarily concerned with things you light on fire to generate electricity. There's no reason to mention things that aren't being lit of fire.
breakyerself··on Oceans hit highest temperature on record
Not long ago fossil fuel use was growing exponentially. The fact that its flatlined is a major turn in the course of history. There's no reason it can't begin to decline exponentially at any time.
