brunnock··on Sony's TV business is being taken over by Tcl
Strange considering how venerated Sony was by American business leaders. Steve Jobs even tried to convince Apple to adopt corporate uniforms like Sony's.

brunnock··on Outlook/Hotmail is no longer blocking my mail server
I ran into this issue several years ago. After complaining, MS allowed me to send email to MS properties (hotmail, live.com), but continued to block my email to their Office 365 clients.

I now use AWS SES to handle mail delivery. It's free for up to 200 daily messages which is fine for me.

brunnock··on Ask HN: What's the current best domain host?
I've been using https://domains.google/ for years. $12/year/domain. Email forwarding is included. I don't even know if they charge extra for anything else.

You could say the same thing about Steve Jobs or Thomas Edison. Good luck convincing folks neither is a genius.

brunnock··on The Most Terrifying Thought Experiment of All Time
I think the fear is that the Basilisk will have access to our past records and will be able to determine if we've been naughty or nice.
brunnock··on What caused the Great Recession? It could have been $18 beer.
What is this guy talking about? TARP funds wound up costing only $19B and no new taxes were levied on the middle class.
brunnock··on Ask HN: Food hacks for eating well?
I replaced ice cream with soy smoothies. Frozen fruit, vanilla soy milk, vanilla yogurt, and vanilla bean paste. I put all of the ingredients in a large glass and mix them with a hand blender. Easy to make and clean. The bean paste makes it taste more like an ice cream shake. I also combine peanut butter, cocoa powder, chocolate syrup, soy milk and yogurt for a chocolate alternative.

brunnock··on An Interview with Mark Fletcher, founder of Bloglines and ONEList
Of course. The purpose of a business is to generate a profit. Anything else is a con. You might as well post an interview with the founders of Kozmo.
brunnock··on An Interview with Mark Fletcher, founder of Bloglines and ONEList
The IRS doesn't recognize that business model. If a business has no expectation of making a profit, then it's a hobby.

brunnock··on An Interview with Mark Fletcher, founder of Bloglines and ONEList
Neither ONEList nor Bloglines had any revenue. Why are they considered "successful" companies?
brunnock··on Ask HN: Are we in trouble?
Shout out to Larry Winget. The economy went down the tubes after they canceled Big Spender.

brunnock··on MIT-Trained Entrepreneurs Create Businesses With $2 Trillion a Year in Sales
MIT did a similar report in the 90s. I read it and found that they were claiming that HP was an MIT company (Hewlett and Packard met at Stanford).

I couldn't find a list of companies in the latest report, but I would take it with a grain of salt.

brunnock··on Ask YC: Should I believe the Rails hype?
You didn't address my point. Can you think of any writer who improved his skills by learning a different language? Can you think of a mathematician who improved his skills by learning a different notational system? Did Michael Jordan become a better basketball player after playing minor league baseball?
brunnock··on Ask YC: Should I believe the Rails hype?
I think it's better to stick with what you're familiar with.

To use books and written languages as an example, can anyone name a writer who suddenly wrote better books when he switched to a different language?

brunnock··on Ask YC: How do you invest your money for long term growth?
Invest 100% of your money in small-cap/value funds. They do best in the long run.

Invest 100% of your money in BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, China). They have large, youthful populations with better prospects than America, Europe, or China.

I'm afraid that I don't know of any small-cap/value, BRIC funds. If anyone knows of any, I'd appreciate a pointer. Thanks.

brunnock··on Ask YC: What Bank account and accounting software are LLC startups using?
We use Bank of America. They offer online payroll for $15/month. Free if you pay with direct deposit and all of your employees have BofA accounts. They will prepare and file fedaral and state tax forms and payments as well. That's a very good deal.

We use Quickbooks online (QBOE). Clunky interface. MSIE only. But it's a webapp (don't worry about backups).

We use PayPal for credit cards. They are not "unprofessional" and their API is simpler than any bank or merchant company that I know of.

brunnock··on How does everybody backup?
I second the Rsync recommendation. I back up our servers every 15 minutes with it. In the event of a catastrophe, we will have lost 15 minutes worth of data, at most.
