callmemclovin··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
There's no need to 'carefully craft a fun metric', if you're honest to yourself you'll notice that plant-based nutrition is the only sustainable way to feed billions of humans on this planet. But I'm curious, which micro- & macronutrients do you think are only available from meat and cheese?
callmemclovin··on Hitachi launches CO2 heat pump water heaters with solar-friendly tariff controls
That's true, old school refrigerants like R-12 are awful. The downside of modern replacement refrigerants are high operating pressure (>100 bar for R-744/CO2) or high flammability for natural refrigerants like R-290 (Propane) and R-600a (Isobutane). But these are solely engineering problems, and I'm happy to know that my R-290 heat pumps at home (Panasonic L & Wolf FHS) and A/C (Midea Xtreme Save Blue) aren't awful to the environment, once they reach EOL.
callmemclovin··on The entire city of San Francisco as a video game
Came here to say this - I have fond memories of playing Midtown Madness 2 as a kid (IIRC it came bundled with our new Windows ME family PC). I remember when I had the chance to visit SF in 2005 and I would recognize so many of the streets from playing the game. Good times.
callmemclovin··on Raccoons are showing early signs of domestication
Well at least in Germany they are a thing - a quick google search says there's a population of >1 million raccoons in Germany.
callmemclovin··on Real-time CO2 monitoring without batteries or external power
That's in the normal range of accuracy of modern CO2 sensors, for example SCD40 from Sensirion is described with an accuracy of ±50.0 ppm ±5.0 %m.v.
callmemclovin··on Xiaomi Home Integration for Home Assistant
I'm a noob when it comes to DBs, but stumbled upon using InfluxDB with Home Assistant - would you say that's a solid choice, or are there better alternatives out there?
callmemclovin··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
Well with the DIY route that's not a problem - nkon.nl is shipping to France as well, I guess? So there you can get EVE 280 Ah cells for about 100 €/kWh: https://www.nkon.nl/fr/rechargeable/lifepo4/prismatisch/eve-...
callmemclovin··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
From that page: Pylontech 5 kWh for 1198€ - so 250€/kWh is also possible :-)
callmemclovin··on Batteries: How cheap can they get?
Yeah I think if you want to order from CATL directly, your chances for a reply are better if your order is worth some billions :-)

EVE cells are very famous in the DIY scene, you can get them via Alibaba/Aliexpress, or if you're in Europe from nkon.nl, they have a very good reputation.

callmemclovin··on I watched Nvidia's Computex 2024 keynote and it made my blood run cold
"Solar energy is the most abundant energy resource on earth -- 173,000 terawatts of solar energy strikes the Earth continuously. That's more than 10,000 times the world's total energy use." source: https://www.energy.gov/articles/top-6-things-you-didnt-know-...

I'd say we don't run out of renewable energy in the near future, we just have to collect more of it.

callmemclovin··on DJI – The ART of obfuscation
The video footage of suicide drones you can find on r/combatfootage is nearly always from custom drones, the giveaway is the analog video transmission. As the poster before said, DJI drones are only used for reconnaisance (for example DJI Matrice), where high-quality digital video transmission (and thermal image cameras) are very useful.
callmemclovin··on My next Mac might be the last
Huh, interesting, I always think of the Macbooks from the 2007-2011 era to be the best in terms of hardware regarding the reliability - if you look up the major Macbook recalls and problems, they all begin after that time, for example the dying graphics problems, faulty logic boards, delaminating retina screens, faulty SSDs and so on...
callmemclovin··on The Gibson Rev 001 Dual LCD/E-Ink Cyberdeck
Well it depends where you live, if you happen to live in Germany (I guess they ship to the EU as well), there are quite a few on stock right now at BerryBase, according to rpilocator.com
callmemclovin··on RP2040 Doom
I guess the RPi Zero W would suit your needs a lot better, and it seems to be in stock in some shops. The Pico doesn't run Linux so cron jobs aren't possible.
callmemclovin··on Apple AirTags draining battery of devices close by
For the Arduino route I'd heavily recommend the Adafruit Bluefruit boards over the official Arduino BLE boards. Some of the Bluefruit boards are based on the nRF52 and therefore support OTA. The BLE implementation on the official Arduino boards (for example Nano 33 BLE) is okay but IMO Adafruit is doing a better job there.
callmemclovin··on Dip Switch USB Stick
Just did a quick search for JTAG debuggers on Aliexpress, and the majority seem to be clones of Segger J-Links, so yeah... it's easy to produce the (simple) hardware and sell for cheap if you just steal the software, it's the same with Saleae Logic Analyzers.
callmemclovin··on Dip Switch USB Stick
Yeah it's pretty easy now to build USB HID gadgets with various boards from Sparkfun/Adafruit/Arduino... even the small Digispark board based on the ATtiny85 can act as an (emulated) USB HID device :-)
callmemclovin··on Dip Switch USB Stick
If you're a (non-commercial) hobbyist/student, there's the official Segger J-Link EDU Debug Probe for 50€, same functionality as the J-Link BASE.
callmemclovin··on DIY Onewheel – open-source self balancing skateboard
Maybe you're thinking of the concept of multiple discovery: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multiple_discovery
callmemclovin··on Renesas enters FPGA market with the first ultra-low-power, low-cost family
Oh that's some nice info, with their low price point (around 0.25$ for the low-end ones) the GreenPAK devices appeared to me like a gamechanger in the making. I hope they gain more traction in the future.
callmemclovin··on Porting Doom to a USB Bluetooth Dongle
That's true, but I guess it will take some years until manufacturers leave behind the proven line-up of cheap mikrocontrollers like the TI MSP430. They're so ubiquitous in these applications, TI even provides a Electric Toothbrush Controller Reference Design if you want to have a look at it.
callmemclovin··on Porting Doom to a USB Bluetooth Dongle
You're right, because the nRF52 series are Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices, they can't stream music at all :-) Music streaming is done via Bluetooth Classic (as of now). BLE != Bluetooth Classic
callmemclovin··on DJI Mavic 3 Drone
Sorry, but I think you got this wrong, there's (currently) no transponder on DJI drones that enables remote tracking for them. In the future (2023?), FAA Remote ID will be mandatory, but even then, this is only a short range tracking system (like license plates on cars). If you think otherwise, please provide a source that there is a trackable transponder on current DJI drones.
callmemclovin··on Building a DIY Smart Doorbell
This seems like a good use case for LoRa wireless modules, I haven't used them personally, but they claim a range of 10 miles without obstacles. Try searching for "LoRaWAN Door Bell" if you want off-the-shelf products, or otherwise for "Arduino + LoRa" if you want to DIY :-)
callmemclovin··on OctoPrint
If you've got the money, I'd suggest Original Prusa, since I got one I've never used my Creality CR-10 again. Even though the CR-10 isn't a bad printer at all, the Prusa provides the overall better experience. :-)
callmemclovin··on The GameStop Mess Exposes the Naked Short Selling Scam – The American Prospect
> literally many thousands of people on WSB were insisting it would go to $1000.

Yes, and nobody knows what would've happened if there was no dubious buying restriction from brokers. With the strong momentum of the stock price on that day, 1000$ was not unrealistic.

> Imagine 15 years ago pumping up Blockbuster stock to 20x what it was worth.

The famous VW short squeeze happened 13 years ago and made VW the biggest company in the world for a short period of time.

callmemclovin··on Australia to produce seaweed cattle feed that reduces methane emissions by 80%
> just because you and some other people have it easy to quit meat doesn’t mean that it’s easy for all the rest.

Yeah but... so what? What's the point in only pursuing easy goals? Do you think we should have cancelled the Apollo program just because it wasn't easy? Abandoning meat will be another milestone for mankind - even if it's just for our own long-term survival on this planet.
