coldfloor··on French lawmakers approved a tax of €0.055 for every gigabyte of internet traffic
Yes, repeating my comments from the other time this was disingenuously posted ( https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50310796 ) , this should be flagged if not removed. The way these posts are being titled is misinformation and rage bait.

It's also disappointing to see how many users here, people who you'd expect to at least have a mild familiarity with the internet and how it works, don't read the article, comments, or sometimes even the entire OP. They see a title that supports their biases, make wild assumptions, and immediately move to spitting vitriol into the comments.

coldfloor··on French lawmakers approved a tax of €0.055 for every gigabyte of internet traffic
Very interesting how eager people are to accept headlines at face value when they support biases, before reading the article or trying to understand what's actually happening.
coldfloor··on Tell HN: Scribd Breached
Geez, I know nobody here clicks through and reads articles before commenting, but are we not even reading the posts now?

>we found that the third party may have accessed your email address... last 4 digits of your credit card and country, credit card issuer, credit card expiry date, payment history

coldfloor··on France is getting download tax for content providers (€0.055/GB)
Right, this should be flagged. It's blatant misinformation and rage bait. How is a random post on a random message board even considered a valid source. OP here should take the advice of the mod on the board they linked to, where the thread was locked:

>it's a good idea to just not post things we don't understand. Let's not be so in a rush to break news that it becomes misinformation.

coldfloor··on Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS
Ironic comment from someone who literally just submitted an AI slop report and went so far as to give it a website and cutsey name to attempt to feign legitimacy and skill behind the "researcher."
coldfloor··on Zero click, silent, remote Android DoS
>...which is the exact shape of a "Destructive Remote DoS" in the VRP's own rules.

The trend of Claude referring to everything as having a "shape" irrationally annoys the hell out of me. What an absolutely idiotic way to say "X is like Y."

coldfloor··on Get Ready for Touch on Mac
Lots of comments saying the target audience for this is kids and very casual "Insta and Email" users. But they're not releasing it on the Neo or Air. This is, for now, the "proLED" model only. The base model is $2800 and if you max out the options it goes up to $14,000 (though $7,000 of that is storage).

I really don't understand who they think is going to buy this.

coldfloor··on Get Ready for Touch on Mac
Does your Windows device fold, or do you actually reach up across the keyboard to touch the screen? If these things folded into a tablet mode I might consider it, but stretching your arm out across the desk and keyboard at an awkward angle seems like it would get uncomfortable pretty quickly.
coldfloor··on Somebody please stop the spam texts
Like the OP, I've received multiple "You haven't voted yet!" messages from a state I no longer live in. I also received two messages today saying "Can you please rush in even just $1 right this second to help us get voters to the polls?"

Are these messages effective on a significant enough portion of the population to be worth sending? It feels like it would have the opposite effect and piss people off. Who gets a text like this and goes "Oh wow yes I better send this person a dollar right away!"

coldfloor··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
I don't think technical knowledge really comes into play here, which is exactly why it's causing such anxiety. If you're a U.S. citizen, enough of your identity is available for sale that this could happen to you, and there's nothing you can do about it.

You can't keep your PII safe because government and financial institutions have it, have already lost it repeatedly, and keep exposing it. You can't prevent these types of accounts from being opened because credit blocks and monitoring don't come into play with them. You can't monitor it yourself because the accounts don't show up on credit reports and there's no way for you to find out they exist.

The victim in this case was randomly selected. It could have been any person in the country, because literally every single one of us has had the minimum info needed to create a Cash App (et. al) account leaked at least once. Some people commenting here have probably had accounts opened in their names and never knew about it, only because the police weren't as malicious as the guys handling this case, or didn't feel like bothering to investigate at all.

coldfloor··on Quad9 (DNS Resolver) to Exit France
Yeah, that was mentioned as an anecdote on why they believe geo-blocking wouldn't be sufficient, and it happened 5 years ago, in Germany. It's completely irrelevant and Sony has nothing to do with what's happening here. The actual post is about a current lawsuit, in France, brought by a sports-streaming service called beIN.
coldfloor··on Quad9 to exit France
What's with all the Sony comments? This has nothing to do with Sony.
coldfloor··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
I'm feeling paranoid now and wondering if the best defense is to proactively open accounts with Cash App, Venmo, whatever other stupid peer-to-peer wallet apps exist, just to lock down my identity and be in control of it. I'm not sure if locked credit and monitoring would work here because these services probably don't do credit checks or show up on reports anyway.
coldfloor··on SaaS Is Dead
A lot of this is a massive stretch. It's majority self-hosted which the average person is not going to deal with.

Some of the "alternatives" aren't even close. All but one of the Spotify/Apple Music replacements are self-hosted things where the user needs to provide the audio files. That's nothing like the near-infinite jukebox experience that Spotify and such offer. The only one that isn't self-hosted/BYOM is basically just an app-only (no web) front end for free YT music or you need to pay for the underlying streaming services anyway.

coldfloor··on Token-maxxing is dead, OpenRouter's token usage plateaus
Re: Companies starting to back-off, I've seen several articles like this one https://futurism.com/artificial-intelligence/enterprise-ai-s... (yes I realize this source is generally anti-ai)

Regarding regular people being ambivalent or hostile, I feel like that's pretty obvious, at least in the western world. Across all social media, outside of tech-chambers, the anti-ai sentiment is very loud. Nearly everyone posses a misplaced hatred for data centers, and this both fuels and is fueled by ai-hate. There's massive backlash from gamers and inevitable walk-backs whenever a video game company proposes using ai for anything.

coldfloor··on The Elizabeth Holmes documentary “You Can See Everything” is deceiving
So many comments about Holmes, I think, are missing the point. This isn't about Holmes, and neither, IMO, is the article. Like all things Nathan Fielder does, this is a movie by Nathan for Nathan. Elizabeth Holmes is just used, in every sense of the word, as a prop.

The article was written by someone who's never seen any of Nathan's other work and is apparently blown away by his skill at and unquenchable fetish for using and deceiving people. Yeah, that's his whole thing. Congrats, you just watched a documentary about psychopaths.

coldfloor··on I let an AI run my startup for a week
What's your threshold for "these days?" Didn't this exact scenario just happen like 3 months ago with Instagram?
coldfloor··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
The project the blog post is attacking is Artcraft, spearheaded by HN's most vocal AI evangelist zealot. He's stated that he's financing the thing with the revenue from his $3, no $4, no $5M/year AI image generator.

Which is why the salient part of the post is "Unless your intention is just to generate headlines and promote an AI business." Because that's exactly what this is. A cynical scheme to draw attention to his commercial services.

coldfloor··on Attack of the Vibe Coded Photoshop Clones
>If you’re trying to build a Photoshop competitor in the year 2026 you should be building the engine first and then adding all the advanced features on top later, not the other way around. Unless your intention is just to generate headlines and promote an AI business.

I really wish more people realized this was Artcraft's goal.

coldfloor··on Couple was swatted 55 times in 2 years over a post about Norm Macdonald
Read the article. The police were well aware. They're on body/doorbell cams multiple times commenting that "this house always gets swatted" or otherwise acknowledging that the call is probably fake. Then they run in guns blazing anyway. They know. They don't care. They enjoy doing this.
coldfloor··on Couple was swatted 55 times in 2 years over a post about Norm Macdonald
Not only that, but according to another article, the victim had to pay the stalker/site operator after losing the case.

>A judge also ordered Mr Tomlinson to pay the anonymous blogger behind the website $23,700 in legal fees.

coldfloor··on "I'm Embarrassed on Behalf of the Tech Industry"
Unfortunately in many countries you can't participate in society without WhatsApp. Where I'm at in South America, not having a WhatsApp is about equivalent to not having a phone number at all in the U.S.
coldfloor··on When did Google get so weird?
The few times I've resigned myself to asking Gemini or ChatGPT something I couldn't find an answer to, my experience has been the same. 100% of the time. An LLM has never, not once, given me a correct answer or not lied to me. It's always been the same experience you describe. It goes in circles "Try X... Try Y... Try X?" Until I tell it to stop telling me X or Y, and then it goes, "LOL you can't do that at all, I was just wasting your time."

Most recently, I was considering moving away from iterm2 on MacOS, and I wanted to know if any other terminal emulator supported gestures for switching between tabs. So I asked Gemini, and it says, "Yes Ghostty supports gestures for switching between tabs."

"Ok I just installed Ghostty and I can't find anything about gestures."

"You need to add foo=bar to your conf file."

"I added foo=bar to my conf file and now it's saying the conf file is invalid."

"Sorry bro, remove foo=bar and add baz=boo to the conf file."

"It says baz=boo is invalid too."

"baz=boo isn't a real option. Remove that and add foo=bar to your conf file."

"You already told me to do that and I already told you that doesn't work."

"You shouldn't put foo=bar or baz=boo in the Ghostty conf file. Both are invalid. Ghostty doesn't support gestures. Have you considered iterm2?"

coldfloor··on "Someone just sent me an ad that features an AI version of me. What do I do?"
A reverse image search of the guy turns up a bunch of different ad campaigns, most prominently for something called Darigold.

From their site:

Here's two from the photographer's site who worked on the ad:

And this one on the portfolio page of the "hair and make-up artist:"

He's also here in the upper right, I think in a Fruit of the Loom commercial:

So to me that means this is either a real ad with real people, and the female model just happens to look like the OOP. Or the people who made this ad stole the guy's likeness, too. But stealing the face of a guy who's job is doing ads, to make an ad, seems pretty ballsy.

I guess a third option is the guy doesn't exist at all, and all of that stuff is a rabbit hole of inauthenticity.

coldfloor··on Apple has added persistent 'ads' to iOS, and it's driving users crazy
This is clickbait. The way they put "ads" in quotes every time shows they know what they're doing. I've seen some other comments here complaining about ads in Maps (which I've never used and can't speak to), but this article is specifically calling out the long-existing practice of Settings showing a little badge on new devices that says "You're entitled to some free months of Arcade/TV" or whatever. That's not an ad, or an "ad."
coldfloor··on Hacking AI customer service agents
If fake screenshots, repetitious turbo-verbosity that turns every paragraph into a brain-breaking dadaist poem, and superfluous jargon-dropping doesn't convince you, what will?!
coldfloor··on Firefox's AI Switch Is Off. Telemetry Isn't
Because it's useful in aiding in development. "Telemetry" is not "spying" or "collecting personal information" or whatever else uninformed people like this blog author try to dramatize it as. Telemetry is anonymous crash reports, how many users are using vertical vs horizontal tabs, how many people engaged the AI killswitch, etc. If it's NOT anonymized/bucketized usage date, then it's NOT telemetry. People need to stop conflating the two.

Ironically, it's the people who disable all telemetry out of ignorance and paranoia that end up crying every time a developer deprecates their favorite feature or they have an issue with a new release. If you don't vote you don't get to complain. Mozilla's PM's in particular have repeatedly published and cited telemetry data in their decision making, and have referenced crash reports in proactively filed bugs.

coldfloor··on [dead]
Was the linked article written by a confused AI?

There's no such thing as Airglow Browser. The entire article describes in great detail something that doesn't exist. Then it provides a link to "download the binary at airglow.dev."

airglow.dev is nothing but a link to a vibe coded Chrome extension that uses Claude to write user scripts.

coldfloor··on Your 'App' Could Have Been a Webpage (so I fixed it for you)
>I can’t understand how we got to this place with “app culture”! Software companies are happy to make their lives harder (and more expensive: deploying to the big app stores isn’t free!), in order to deliver HTML content to fewer people and with fewer features than if they just published directly to the Web in the first place!

I think the post both directly and indirectly answers its own question when it states that the app does two things:

>It reports tracking data associated with your Google Account back to the developers. >It shows you advertisements (which they call “inspirations”) for other trips organised by the same agency.

It's a lot easier to be user-hostile with an app than a website, and a lot harder for the average user to detect or block the bad behavior. Just about everyone at this point knows how to install a content blocker, open dev tools, and block stuff with their browser. The number of people with the ability, time, and energy to circumvent cert-pinning and inspect an app's traffic like this guy did is significantly smaller.

There's a reason why every company is constantly shoving apps down our throats and telling us all the cool young people are mobile-first.

coldfloor··on How We're Keeping Reddit Real and Safe in the AI Era
There's no way they expect any Reddit user to believe they're "keeping it real." The site is completely overrun by bots, and they continue to take actions protecting those accounts while punishing real users. The weird reverse block function, curated histories, limiting RSS, breaking old.reddit. All of this helps bots hide their activity.

Meanwhile, real users are shadowbanned all over the place, often just for the crime of being new to the site or not self-censoring. If you use the report function linked at the end of the article, the AI-generated content you're reporting will frequently pass their poorly engineered automated sniff-test, and instead the reporter ends up with their own account flagged for "abuse" or "bullying."
