deepsun··on Java's new AOT cache feature is in a rough state
> What would be needed is some sort of compatibility switch that disables all optional CPU features. Sure, you will get some reduced performance of the compiled code, but in exchange, a faster startup time.

I think other AOT-compiled languages don't opt in for the lowest set of CPU features -- they just detect them at runtime and use whenever present, all in compiled machine code.

deepsun··on The 'else' keyword is probably a literal translation from German (2020)
I remember it felt odd when XSLT code provided "otherwise" instead of "else".
deepsun··on Git for the US Code
And also unit tests for edge cases and loopholes in laws.
deepsun··on UUIDv7: Timestamps aren’t time-ordered and other oddities
It is hard to do even sitting on a planet (even impossible) -- there are minute differences in gravity and acceleration between any two points, so time flows with different speeds. And it changes all the time.

If something is possible theoretically, it may not be in practice. But if something is proven to be impossible, it's also impossible in practice.

Note we're not talking about "below a millisecond" or below any other time range (second, minute, month). We're talking about _exactly_.

deepsun··on Amazon’s “digital pacifier” for toddlers
To be fair, my first computer _was_ inside its keyboard.
deepsun··on I Do Understand Relativity
Entanglement (more correctly, wave-function collapse) cannot be used to transmit information. So there is a "spooky action at a distance", but there is no faster than light communication.

I find it's easier to understand if you assume that every entangled particle already "knows" what state it will be at the moment of entanglement. In theory it's called "hidden variables". John Stewart Bell has proven that there's no local hidden variables, but noone said about global variables. For example, in Superdeterminism it's all easy and clear.

PS: Physicists thet reject Superdeterminism only for philosophical reasons, there's no scientific reasons to reject it.

deepsun··on I Do Understand Relativity
Theres one more thing that is often assumed, but "wrong" -- that there's some global time.

For example if you hear something like "did you know that aliens from Alpha Centauri see Earth as it was 2 years ago, as it's the time light from Earth takes to reach Alpha Centauri?". No they do not, because it would assume that there's some common "now" between Earth and Alpha C.

If we assume a common "now", it would lead to a whole bunch of paradoxes and errors, like "what was before the Big Bang?" (error in the question), or "where is the center of the Universe?", or "those faint red-shifted stars that we see as they were almost 13 billion years ago".

deepsun··on Show HN: Steal My Bitcoin
So it would still be stealing legally, right? And feds could watch the thief as the ledger is always public.
deepsun··on UUIDv7: Timestamps aren’t time-ordered and other oddities
Einstein read Poincare papers for sure, and realized that assembling all those pieces together turns the physics upside down. But many of the results of the special relativity were well known before. For example, the great Michelson–Morley experiment was conducted in 1887, 18 years before. Einstein was the first to realize that all the pieces form a totally new puzzle.
deepsun··on Docker is weird
Another weirdness is why does docker even need a daemon? Podman saw that and can work without daemon.

Similar to Helm -- in v3 they also removed a daemon (Tiller).

deepsun··on UUIDv7: Timestamps aren’t time-ordered and other oddities
> not necessarily exactly equal to the time

I believe it was Poincare who has proven that it's even theoretically impossible to synchronize clocks exactly.

deepsun··on Epic Games Inc v Apple Inc
They will appeal.
deepsun··on Meta ordered to pay $25B penalty in New Mexico Cambridge Analytica case
They will appeal, as usual, and never pay that.
deepsun··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
Old school HTML coder is close, yes.
deepsun··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
I use tables, columns and rows.

Am I DBA, accountant, or data engineer?

deepsun··on Why are we even doing all this?
I've read it, the main idea is "this isn’t just about mathematics or physics — it’s about fundamentally reimagining what it means to be human", but he still talks like all problems are solved. My point is that no only those that did not require novel creative approaches like Collatz.
deepsun··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Yep, but Edison is long gone, while Hollywood kept compounding over time. There's zero other reasons Hollywood is _currently_ better than any other place for filmmaking.
deepsun··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Santa Clara, CA. Lots of computer systems around.
deepsun··on Why are we even doing all this?
> AI has solved all our problems

What about the Collatz conjecture? AFAIK, it requires some novel approaches to mathematics, which would be a real testament to AI creative skills.

I don't doubt it will be solved some day, but as of now it's too early to say that all our problems are solved.

deepsun··on I know why the mathematicians weep
> But tomorrow, it may be the illustrators

I thought illustrators have been out-of-job for quite time, right since Midjourney released. So not tomorrow, but yesterday.

deepsun··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Yep, exactly my point "small change in initial parameters".
deepsun··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Also, how it stops to be. Specializations like that get disrupted if there's an easier way to make money (aka Resource curse, aka Dutch Disease [1]).

Same thing with Israel -- if they had some easier way to make moneys they would go for it. But constant demand from their defense kept if afloat.

deepsun··on C++26 Contracts: Introduction to Preconditions and Postconditions
Interestingly, Java had exactly that in mind when introduced `assert` keyword in very early versions (2002). It's equivalent to an `if` that can throw a runtime AssertionException, but only if the program is launched with `-enableassertions` flag.

The idea is that you use `-enableassertions` only during development, and your program should never rely on it. But it helps IDEs and static analyzers to have a contract about code.

deepsun··on AdFection: Targeted ads turned into a pipeline for zero-click mercenary spyware
Don't forget the compounding effect. Say, one country (or city or community) decides to invest their efforts into area X (e.g. clock making in Switzerland). They do it and become better and better. As long as they keep doing that they can become #1 in the world. Regardless of any reasons "why them".

There's no reason Netherlands are better at chip lithography except that they're doing it (Dutch agriculture success can be attributed to good soils/climate/geolocation, but not chips). There's no reason Hollywood is better at filmmaking. Kinda chaos theory -- small changes to initial state leads to huge changes in the later outcomes.

deepsun··on AWS Lambda Web Functions
Interestingly, Google Cloud recommends using Cloud Run (any container) instead of Cloud Functions (upload code). AWS can do that with Lambda too, I wonder why AWS decided to "move backwards" here, as I always found containers are easier and faster to work with?

Both container-way and code-way have the same scalability (code-way is built into a container anyway, just on the cloud). Maybe AWS re-builds the container for security every day?

The page has only a description, no comparisons. The best way to explain a technology is to compare it with something.

deepsun··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Yup. Fridges don't "need" to be connected, i.e. in order to work. They are "more efficient" when connected, but don't have to be.
deepsun··on If AI is conscient, then we are making slaves
You just said that animals are tortured and then killed. I pointed out that farmers usually do not want to torture their cattle, on the contrary. But the end goal for the farmer is meat/eggs anyway.

So the Bertrand Russel's question -- is the farmer kind to their turkey?

And there's small portion of animals that happy to do what they are doing (shepherd dogs, sled dogs, even pull horses become sad without work), they are bred this way. Not sure whether we can call that slavery.

deepsun··on Hackers activate automatic defrosting in supermarket fridges across Europe
Managers can just call the store on-site employees. Or come in person. They just want to save on labor (aka replace humans with robots).
deepsun··on If AI is conscient, then we are making slaves
Some animals are not tortured, but loved and pestered. Then killed.
