devindotcom··on FCC Officially Raises Minimum Broadband Metric from 25Mbps to 100Mbps
That explains why I got this email from my broadband provider this morning:

>We've increased your internet speeds to show you our appreciation

I was wondering what I'd done to deserve it!

devindotcom··on What flying was like fifty years ago
Incidentally an amazing movie about manufactured political violence that is still haunting and relevant today.

devindotcom··on Rebuilding Netflix's video processing pipeline with microservices
I'm curious about grain encoding - did you work on that at all? My friend heard they were doing a grain extraction layer that was re-added client side. Feel free to contact devin@techcrunch if you have any interesting insight.
devindotcom··on Tweets to Citations: The Impact of Social Media Influencers on AI Research
Don't underestimate the power of informal networks. Buzz is hard to quantify but it clearly has a huge effect on "real" metrics like citations.
devindotcom··on Ultralight, strong, and self-reprogrammable mechanical metamaterials
Of course you're right, my mistake. And it's sitting right here next to me... embarrassing. Anyhow, all worth reading.
devindotcom··on What killed the fight scene?
There's plenty of good fights out there recently... this writer just hasn't watched them.

Korea is putting out a ton of great action. Obviously stuff like Oldboy and Man From Nowhere, but watch The Yellow Sea, or the recent Netflix show Bloodhounds and be amazed (though the ending kinda falls off a cliff). Worst of Evil too, some solid stuff in there. The Japanese show Avalanche had some amazing ones, and the movie Hell Dogs. China's Longest Day in Chang'an has a lot of good fights and is visually one of the best shows in years. Ip Man and countless other martial or wuxia films (though the vibes are different)... Raging Fire (last fight was amazing), anything with Donnie Yen. Indonesia and Thailand are out here too with a lot of lower budget stuff. This is all just off the top of my head.

Admittedly that's all SE Asia, US sensibilities tend more toward gunplay since in this country people pull a gun out when someone looks at them wrong. There's no martial tradition. But film and TV is global now - the US outlook on fights was, frankly, never that great. It took people like Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan to come in and liven things up. If you want good fights, you just have to look outside Hollywood. In a way that's always been true.

devindotcom··on Religious 'Nones' are now the largest single group in the U.S.
Funny that the word is the same as the 9th "canonical hour," Nones, which is what I thought at first. Probably because I'm reading a book set in the 15th century.
devindotcom··on Ultralight, strong, and self-reprogrammable mechanical metamaterials
You might want to read "His Master's Voice" or "Roadside Picnic" by Stanislaw Lem. The first one especially concerns what you're talking about, and the second (basis for "Stalker") is a little more of a tangent on it. Same for "Solaris" honestly. Lem's perspective on cosmic unknowable intelligence was really unique.

Some more at NASA:

And I wrote it up here with some extra context from the creators:

https://techcrunch.com/2024/01/17/nasas-robotic-self-assembl...

The work is very much ongoing. I think the terminology is a little odd (I already have a settled definition for "metamaterials") but it's a pretty smart system. Combine with something that can coat it with a layer of regolith cement and you have a great start for a habitat when humans get there a year or two later.

devindotcom··on Apple Music will now pay 10% higher royalties to artists for Spatial Audio music
I don't know what to tell you. I've tested dozens of pairs of headphones and some have a clearly, obviously larger soundstage than others, with the same exact inputs. Others have a more "inside" feel. I think we must simply be talking about different things, because what I'm describing is a commonly cited property in headphone reviews and discussions.
devindotcom··on FTC bans TurboTax from advertising 'free' services, calls deceptive advertising
you made an account just to talk shit about the poor?
devindotcom··on Apple Music will now pay 10% higher royalties to artists for Spatial Audio music
I don't think this is correct. The headphones themselves certainly have an large effect on the size and quality of the soundstage. Obviously encoding binaural delay and other psychoacoustic features is important too. But Apple is far from the first to do this kind of precision stereo manipulation.
devindotcom··on Apple Music will now pay 10% higher royalties to artists for Spatial Audio music
I don't mean to question your experience, but the inside/outside thing can very easily be a property of the headphones, not the mix. Certainly mixing it to emphasize that is a choice, but a good stereo mix is really not so fundamentally limited in its soundstage.

It may be the producer's deliberate choice to have the voice here, the guitar there, etc, and automatic "spatializers" may moot that choice. But of course so may playing it via a single-channel Bluetooth speaker. It's up to the listener to provide the experience they like best, but I question the need to have Apple pushing this particular type of mix so hard.

devindotcom··on Stable Code 3B: Coding on the Edge
afaik "edge" nearly always means taking place on the device a user is interacting with. no server involved except perhaps as authentication etc. but there is probably some other situation where "edge" could mean local infra or caching.
devindotcom··on OpenAI deletes ban on using ChatGPT for "military and warfare"
My guess is there are huge opportunities for fairly mundane uses of GPT models in military database and research work. A ban on military uses would include, for instance, not allowing the Army Corps of Engineers to use it to improve disaster prep or whatever. But a ban on causing harm ostensibly prevents use on overtly warfare-oriented projects. Most big tech companies make this concession eventually because they love money and the Pentagon has a tremendous amount of it.

for what it's worth, i asked altman directly and he denied using libgen or books2, but also deferred to murati and her team on specifics. but the Q&A wasn't recorded and they haven't answered my follow-ups.
