dirkgently··on Netflix stops paying the ‘Apple tax’ on its $853M in annual iOS revenue
> The world isn't fair, and Apple isn't obliged to give away their stuff for free.

True, and you are not obliged to give pass to Apple either.

dirkgently··on Netflix stops paying the ‘Apple tax’ on its $853M in annual iOS revenue
> you're one of the 10 vetted apps that do what yours does, instead of 1 out of 100 on the Play Store.

1. Citation needed (because looks like you are pulling these numbers out of your ass).

2. And by your argument, looks like people have more choices on Android. Who would have thought?!

dirkgently··on Netflix stops paying the ‘Apple tax’ on its $853M in annual iOS revenue
No. But they did cone up with a design that allowed infinite login attempts.
dirkgently··on Netflix stops paying the ‘Apple tax’ on its $853M in annual iOS revenue
> I am in control with Apple.

Steve Jobs is laughing in his grave.

dirkgently··on How Facebook tracks you on Android [video]
You are wording this in a way that it implies that this (block) happens by ios. That's not true and you know it.
dirkgently··on Fundamental rule of traffic: building new roads makes people drive more (2015)
> so pissed off

> single bike sticks out like a sore thumb

Now it totally makes sense.

dirkgently··on Tesla Adds Larry Ellison and Kathleen Wilson-Thompson as Board Directors
It's like all the @$$holes in the same (board) room.
dirkgently··on One Giant Step for a Chess-Playing Machine
> First, the author of the article has no professional credibility in either chess or machine learning. He's a professor of math and a writer. No disrespect to either math or writing, I love and value both very highly, but they have very little to do with chess and machine learning per se.

Well, do you accept Garry Kasparov qualified to comment on this?

"I admit that I was pleased to see that AlphaZero had a dynamic, open style like my own."

"Alpha-Zero is surpassing us in a profound and useful way, a model that may be duplicated on any other task or field where virtual knowledge can be generated."

dirkgently··on Social networks are no longer social
The plot is far-fetched, but that's not the problem.

It's the writing style - it feels like a cheap thriller written for teens. Too many characters and cheap tricks to 'educate' the reader about technical mumbo-jumbo.

Of course, this is my very subjective opinion. But having read enough PKD and Gaiman, my expectations are different than may be majority of the readers.

dirkgently··on Social networks are no longer social
Sorry, but Daemon is one of the worst sci-fi books I have ever read.
dirkgently··on AT&T will put a fake 5G logo on its 4G LTE phones
Really?

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-apple/apple-says-iphones-...

It wasn't Android. Apple did this deliberately, and only apologized when they got caught.

It's a ritual to bash Android and Google on HN, and Apple gets a pass every time.

dirkgently··on Indian government to intercept, monitor, and decrypt citizens’ computers
Your Western counterparts also complain when Western government does this.

You have a really huge chip on those shoulders.

dirkgently··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
> The simple example here being how Google seems to prioritize "current news", particularly those clicked the most often, over actual search results.

Funny how I still don't see two links: 1. Google search for a keyword 2. DDC link for the same keyword

As I said, it's posturing.

dirkgently··on Clearing Up a Few Things About Facebook’s Partners
Looks like you know for a fact that an App on Android is somehow granted more permission compared to the same App in ios - without users knowing it.

Care to prove your blatant lie with some evidence, or you are just going to bash Google/Android because it's the thing to do on HN?

dirkgently··on Clearing Up a Few Things About Facebook’s Partners
Ah the inevitable, "it's all Google's fault" reply.
dirkgently··on Google transferred ownership of Duck.com to DuckDuckGo
To me, it seems all this long explanation is just posturing when a simple example would have proven your point.
dirkgently··on Google Has a Plan to Eliminate Mosquitoes
A snide comment deserves a snide reply.
dirkgently··on Google Has a Plan to Eliminate Mosquitoes
> And what business does an ad company have in getting into this?

Yes, instead of applauding the effort of solving a very difficult problem that could help people in real meaningful way, I am just going to go for cheap potshots to show how elite I am.

dirkgently··on Swathing is going out of fashion, as most farmers desiccate to ripen their crops
> As someone that grew up on a farm, can you explain why?

One reason is sheer hypocrisy of the country to force developing or under-developed countries to stop subsidizing _their own_ farming.

dirkgently··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear Apple App Store antitrust dispute
You must be joking if your argument is that a closed system is in any way superior to an open one.

Android lets you install apps outside of play store, without any hard tech knowledge. That's not possible on Apple devices unless you are tech savvy and can go through a 10 step process.

Whatever upside you think they have flies in the face of openness.

dirkgently··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear Apple App Store antitrust dispute
> Why shouldn’t I expect it?

Why should I, as a consumer? I don't understand this argument from Apple apologists.

> Apple didn’t even invent the walled-garden digital software store; Microsoft was using it on the X-Box in 2005.

So if it wasn't called out then, it should never be called out ever?

dirkgently··on U.S. Supreme Court to hear Apple App Store antitrust dispute
Read it again - it's about the monopoly on App Store.

It's like buying a car and only able to use gas sold by that company.

dirkgently··on The new Yahoo? Facebook should heed the lessons of internet history
No. Was just pointing out the fact that Steve Jobs has said a lot of bullshit. I wouldn't want to quote him to make any kind of point.
dirkgently··on The new Yahoo? Facebook should heed the lessons of internet history
Thanks for the history lesson. But OP never suggested that Yahoo built it.
dirkgently··on The new Yahoo? Facebook should heed the lessons of internet history
Yeah. Who needs big screen?

- Steve Jobs

dirkgently··on Tumblr was removed from Apple’s App Store over child pornography issues
So you would make the same argument for Facebook, YouTube too?

Or, as I have learned from HN, different rules apply to Apple vs rest of the tech companies?

dirkgently··on Facebook Applied for Patent to Predict Who’s in House Based on Family Photos
Spyware? Any evidence of this or you are just high on Apple Kool aid / Google hate?
dirkgently··on A Look Inside the Tactics of Definers, Facebook’s Attack Dog
While I agree with your sentiment, I don't know if butthurt has anything to do with homophobia.

Butt is not same as butthole.

dirkgently··on A Look Inside the Tactics of Definers, Facebook’s Attack Dog
Oops. Looks like I have inadvertently ended up on right wing conspiracy site.
dirkgently··on A Look Inside the Tactics of Definers, Facebook’s Attack Dog
This is an interesting comment. My guess is that fb is directly or indirectly paying these shills here and in other tech forums to defend fb and/or smear Google.

(Of course, Mark wouldn't know anything about it.)

BTW, does HN make their content available in programming friendly way (like Reddit)? It would be interesting to do some analysis on age of account vs their comments.
