dpkirchner··on The 'Astra can read and write weights to improve Qwen' post is misleading
> it authored a program to analyse and fix the weights.

This is a difference without much distinction, at least to me. It's like being upset when someone says that Claude made a http call -- of course the LLM didn't make the call itself, it used a tool to do it.

dpkirchner··on Patrick Stewart has died
Realistically, he probably shouldn't have been allowed to return as captain after being so uniquely compromised. Keep him in Starfleet, sure, but maybe stick him behind a desk or lectern in San Francisco.
dpkirchner··on Evidence of a spying operation by ICE against left-wing social movements
It's an argument in favor of stronger immigration enforcement against employers.

Reducing illegal immigration is extremely simple and inexpensive -- toss a few Big Ag CEOs in something like "alligator Alcatraz". There's no step 2.

dpkirchner··on Leak website releases data on DHS employees
It's the line that folks on a certain side of the political divide (typically aligned with DHS) tend to bring out whenever we talk about the harms of surveillance.
dpkirchner··on Tesla Semi catches fire on I-880
Yeah.
dpkirchner··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
Weird.

Yep, that's exactly what I'm saying, word for word, 100%.

dpkirchner··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
What's to say about the price of diesel? He promised it would be more expensive -- that everything would be more expensive -- and his weirdo supporters were on board. They got what they wanted. (Unfortunately so did the rest of us.)
dpkirchner··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
Good news, we can! Solar and battery technology will reduce our reliance on oil, which will reduce the need for our expensive overseas misadventures and crimes.
dpkirchner··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
> China has several advantages no Western country has:

Plus, 4. The ability to do long-term planning.

5. An engineering culture instead of a lawfare culture.

There's upsides and downsides to both of these facts, of course.

dpkirchner··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
> I really wish I understood why nuclear has this cult-like following. It's completely irrational.

I believe it is largely because it is so unviable. If you can shut down any power supply argument with "but muh nuclear" then you can ensure that we keep burning coal and gas forever. And as a bonus, you get to pretend you're the smartest person in the room for having come up with the only good solution.

dpkirchner··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
The less evil one, in this case, is the one that is not afraid to admit excess CO2 (emitted by human activity) is a problem.
dpkirchner··on OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud
Search for: "hanson scary movie 2"

AI overview result: images of Chris Elliot as Hanson and an AI summary of the band Hanson.

This is an extension of the long-standing issue where Google just ignores keywords randomly, even when you only typed a few (it'd be excusable if it dropped one in ten, say, and zero out of 3/4.)

dpkirchner··on Kimi K3.1 Pro and K3.1 Pro Highspeed
About how much would the session have cost if you were paying API prices (assuming good cache rates)?
dpkirchner··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
The good news is that Safari finally stopped loading the certificate test page I've been using: https://dv-g3b-emudhra.we-have-a-problem.com/
dpkirchner··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
Ah well. Guess it's as broken as the CRL, or I just clicked the buttons wrong or something. I just saw a thank you screen. I checked my email in case they sent something there, but nah.
dpkirchner··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
I selected the applefeedback:// url you shared and used "look up" (there's no "open link" option). That sent me to the official Apple feedback site. Are you saying that site's submissions aren't checked or something else?
dpkirchner··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
I've reported it (I can verify the CRL check either failed or the CRL does not include the CA certs). No FB number was provided.
dpkirchner··on OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud
Sure, I'll try. It has been a while (in LLM terms) since I opened them.
dpkirchner··on Airbnb bans making guests do dishes and take out the trash
And in fact I have yet to find a maid service that doesn't offer the service. But maybe it depends on state law.
dpkirchner··on OpenAI models are coming to Google Cloud
Last I checked their AI results were terrible, worse than anything I get from ChatGPT or Claude. The only benefit is their AI results are fast.

If I were google there's no way I'd leave their AI overviews in place as-is.

dpkirchner··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
One of the things we all have to be mindful of, including you, is binary thinking. Very few are calling for there to be "no humans" and you know it.
dpkirchner··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
Consider the opposite direction: what if you want to message someone? What if you haven't messaged them in a while? Imagine you have seven messaging apps installed, some of the names you've forgotten ("Discord", is that obviously a messaging app?). Imagine you know that they're reachable somewhere just not exactly where.
dpkirchner··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Often the cheapest solution is only cheapest because its producers aren't paying for externalities.
dpkirchner··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
Unfortunately a) economics and politics are inextricably tied and b) politicking will be required to allow economics to have a greater effect (ie by offsetting externalities through taxation).
dpkirchner··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
As long as you can see your own vote, someone can force/coerce you to show them your vote.
dpkirchner··on OpenAI discloses four more rogue incidents
Wonder if potential, specific criminal charges will be listed as risks on their S-1.
dpkirchner··on US federal budget deficit jumps 12% in one year to nearly $2 Trillion
Were those municipalities and provinces receiving any money from the federal government and is that how they had surpluses? That's certainly how it works here in the US.
dpkirchner··on My old job feels distant now
The /goal command does a pretty dang good job if you tell it what will satisfy the goal and optionally what will not. It will still eventually stop if it finds the problem impossible (I too wanted faster CI, it could only get to a few minutes slower than my demand.)
dpkirchner··on Steam Client is now faster than Epic's new vibe coded launcher
IME, the UI library idiosyncrasies are the pieces that take the longest to get right. Common business logic is super simple by comparison.
dpkirchner··on Tesla's Robotaxis Blow Through School Zones, NHTSA Petition Alleges
Just think of the minutes of your life you'll never get back. 20 minutes of your entire life, poof, gone! And for what, safety?
