eanthy··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
I've never been more relaxed too, here are some more pointers:

1. Realise you're lucky to be in this position to work from home, as opposed to medical staff and being depressed is a luxury.

2. You are not a code machine, amount of code written is not a good measure of how productive you are. Better think of how much you contributed overall or learnt something new that year.

3. Your work is not your life, so focus and even obsess over other things such as hobbies and spend more mental energy on that rather than worry about your job. Your job just pays the bills nothing more.

4. Find online ways to socialise such as playing online games. If you're introverted that should be enough to satisfy your social needs.

eanthy··on Ask HN: What to do when company takes Covid-19 as a joke?
Basically money > people. Everyone acts like it's not gonna happen to them
eanthy··on Ask HN: What to do when company takes Covid-19 as a joke?
People say it like it's a cold and we might as well get it instead of everything close for 2 weeks and get it over with. I don't know why UK think it's so much better and special than any other country in Europe. Only time will show.
eanthy··on Ask HN: Expats in Ukraine or Russia, how is life?
Since when do people move to Russia to find love, more like find a gold diggie
eanthy··on Ask HN: Why is Italy hit so hard with the Covid-19 virus?
it's among the hardest hit ones, there's a reason why more developed countries don't get it as bad
eanthy··on Ask HN: Why is Italy hit so hard with the Covid-19 virus?
Because italian/spanish love to kiss each other as a salute and hug and all kinds of physical contact as opposed to english for example who wouldn't. Hence virus is easier to spread there.
eanthy··on Ask HN: How can I help the Coronavirus situation?
I try to never touch my face while in public but what if your nose itches to pain and your eyes start to tear until you scratch it, then it's difficult
eanthy··on Ask HN: Coolest CS Subfields?
If you care about the amount of jobs in these fields then consider data science or potentially machine learning (which is mostly doing devopsy stuff in reality)
eanthy··on Ask HN: I am not a programmer but a coder, what should I do?
I am in exact same situation as you and been looking for ways to get out of it. I'm looking for answers too here so not much to suggest but my approach is to learn a different tech/role that I find interesting and try to get job there, in my case machine learning. Try doing that and slowly overtime you will gain the skills and hopefully a job that makes some impact
eanthy··on Ask HN: I have nothing to do at work and it's killing me
Don't assume that being a programmer is any different. It's all up to the project/company you work in. I've had this same situation in 2 jobs as a software engineer. The worst is you could do self-learning but then you have to say what you've done in stand-up and if you say self-learn you have to make it seem like it's relevant to business, but if it's some language the company doesn't use it's not even relevant. So you end up doing some meaningless task and spread it over long period of time cause you know you won't get more any time soon.

My suggestion is try to work from home, sounds like your company is flexible. Use your home time for self-learning and applying to other jobs/going interviews.

eanthy··on Ask HN: With ADHD, how did you become an effective software developer?
any place where you have self-respect and principals
eanthy··on Ask HN: With ADHD, how did you become an effective software developer?
Every single developer I know has some degree of ADHD. I personally don't have it as bad but I know a colleague who literally can't shut up and stop moving and bothering us all the time. Honestly If the person is not aware of their condition I don't think you can do anything about it besides try to isolate and ignore them somehow.
eanthy··on Ask HN: What is the biggest bullshit you have encountered at your workplace?
classic po
eanthy··on Which website can I reverse engineer for you?
That was a good breakdown I give you that. Would be interesting to see how it changes in the next decade indeed.
eanthy··on Which website can I reverse engineer for you?
pornhub
eanthy··on Ask HN: Why the Hate?
I guess you couldn't ask a more hippy question. The psychology behind it is that not everybody is born in a fairy tale and plenty of people have good reasons to really dislike certain aspects of life or people, simple as that.
eanthy··on Ask HN: How do I understand the results of my job search?
I think the process also depends on your location. Seems like this is for US. In London, UK you can easily get noticed and start the process, but 100% of the time they give you a test to do before any interviews. The problem arises here, because even if you do the test perfectly there is 90% chance you will never hear from them again. You basically end up wasting your time doing some test just to never get any contact/feedback from them. On that last note I've never got a feedback from any interview process even when I've asked. Assuming you are the 10% they contact back, then you go for a face-to-face and the interview there is a tech interview and barely any HR part. Only the tech part of the interview matters and if you pass it you get job, if not - you never hear from them. Anywhere well outside London they don't even do test/tech interview, you just do an HR one and high chance of getting it.
eanthy··on Ask HN: What is the point of algorithm-heavy interviews?
100% agree. In all my years of coding and other people I know you literally never need to implement an algorithm yourself or do anything that is already provided by a library/framework. Knowing alrogithms/data structures is only ever useful for interviews and nothing else. On daily basis you just make classes and basic CRUD operations and mostly design rather than any hardcore logic let alone algorithm... Interviews are unrealistic.
eanthy··on Ask HN: What to do if you're not great at your job
I agree with this too. Especially if what the company does is not of interest it's also very difficult to care about what you are doing or even improve in it. Just find another position where you fit.
eanthy··on Full-time software engineers in London, how much do you earn (2019)?
people commenting these figures are way off to what you find on like Glassdoor. Can more people chip in and get more data for this.
eanthy··on Ask HN: I can’t pass tech screens, Should I change careers?
I have experienced exactly the same and have faced a lot of recruitment nonsense over the years. In my opinion it's all a numbers game, some interviews I absolutely smash both the tech and hr part, others I fail miserably even on easy questions because of various circumstances.

Some companies (for example Apple) won't even give you any hr interview they just call and say "let's go through some tech questions" and some guy starts asking you everything you've learnt in uni over 30mins. Others ask you to do a project at home and present it to them. Most commonly they send you a hackerrank which even if you smash there is always the chance you won't hear from them.

Last bit brings me to my next point, recruiters don't see you as anything more than a resource and will change their mind at any point during the process. Recently I had a call with a company's HR they were super impressed and wanted to invite me in for face-to-face and said they will inform me their availability asap... well that was 3 weeks ago and haven't heard back.

My advice is don't get discouraged or believe anything a recruiter tells you. Once I asked for a very reasonable salary for my experience and the recruiter got pissed off telling me even seniors don't make this in their company. Well guess what the next recruiter that called I got offered position for this exact money I asked for with no questions asked.

Just keep applying and slowly improve your problem solving skills and eventually you will land the right position. Most Interviews are extremely unrealistic anyway and even if you fail it doesn't mean anything about your skills, just means they found someone who would work for them for less money... Keep trying and best of luck!

eanthy··on Ask HN: Advice for my first day as a developer tomorrow
if he is willing to start again as a junior on a lower salary when changing fields then yeah
eanthy··on Ask HN: Advice for my first day as a developer tomorrow
Your first job pretty much determines in what direction your career it's going to go. If you work with tech you like then good for you. If you don't make sure you move within a team that does because your next job will be just an upgrade of what you are doing now, and you better choose the right thing.
eanthy··on Ask HN: Should you be full stack dev or specialise further into a stack?
so do you recommend a career in full stack rather than lets say data engineering?
eanthy··on Blizzard Suspends Professional Hearthstone Player for Hong Kong Comments
ok
eanthy··on Ask HN: How to cope with burnout every 6 months?
Actually impressive you managed to stay so long in a single job (5 years, 3 years etc) I can barely make 1 so imagine how depressed I have to be... If you don't have massive expenses such as rent, kids etc then take a long break and consider what you like doing and try to do that even if it doesn't pay much
eanthy··on Ask HN: Software Engineering,Money and Overcoming Guilt of Being Paid Too Much?
at the same time good chefs are getting paid way more than engineers and traders have starting salary comparable to senior engineer and stupid rappers and hookers make more than all of the above combined - conclusion is life is not fair so get used to it and adapt.
eanthy··on Ask HN: How to transition career from one tech to another?
assessed against what, not like they have your employment history written in stone somewhere
eanthy··on Ask HN: Did anyone leave Software Engineering as your profession? If yes, why?
It's good to see so many of us are in this boat and people notice it. Every company I've been in is always over engineering and overly complicating simple things. I think the solution is switch fields into something you like and move into a smaller start-up where people are more realistic and can't afford stupid over engineering.
eanthy··on Ask HN: How to transition career from one tech to another?
if you do it to older jobs you have and not the current one then it's very possible and no one can tell or try to find out, so just go for it, many people do it
