five82··on Dave Portnoy Bought Back Barstool Sports for $1
I would have given them a 10x return.
five82··on Passage by 1Password: Add passkey support to your app or website
So am I the only one who's noticed that average non-tech users are absolutely horrible with managing passwords and passkeys would be a huge improvement over reusing "ddccbbaa!" across every login they have?
five82··on Ubuntu stops shipping Flatpak by default
Canonical makes decisions based on their own self interest. Not for their users and not for the benefit of the greater community. That's what drove everyone away.
five82··on The FTC wants to ban tough-to-cancel subscriptions
They're mentioned in the article. You can cancel by chat now though. I take advantage of that to renegotiate yearly.
five82··on GNOME 44
The Mac OS X of around 15 years ago had an elegant simplicity to it that I really appreciated. Everything just seemed to work well.

That seems to have been lost. New and often unwanted features just add to the complexity. A lot of first party applications seem subpar. And iCloud often seems more like a nuisance than a feature.

I still like Apple hardware but I’m looking forward to trying Asahi Linux soon.

five82··on Meta plans to lay off 10k employees
There's a reason why we're called "resources".
five82··on The AI Seinfeld Show 'Nothing, Forever' Is Back on Twitch
They've been horrible about communication since the Twitch ban a month ago. And they didn't even reveal anything about their plans to the press leading up to last night while they were promoting their return.

Just my opinion, but I wonder if the changes were their decision so they could own and monetize their "original" ip.

five82··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
They have every right to cover their costs but I don't appreciate the bait and switch. It seems like a desperation move since I don't see how they can sustain and grow their user base at these price points.
five82··on Update to Kagi Search Pricing
It's a 150% price increase if you don't want metered search. I probably would have been ok with a reasonable price increase, maybe 25% to 50%. But it's a lot to ask of your users when most of us have to manage a number of subscriptions and almost all of them have had price increases over the past year.
five82··on It Turns Out Money Does Buy Happiness
Hell, I'm even happier pretending to be on a waverunner in GTA V.
five82··on Microsoft somehow brings iMessage to Windows – will it last?
It seems counterintuitive to use SMS in the first place if your users expect end to end encryption.
five82··on Linux Looks to Retire Itanium/IA64 Support
The tech was solid but the implementation left a lot to be desired. I still shudder when I think about the RHEL 6 Itanium DB cluster I "inherited" and had to maintain. A very temperamental serial console that would constantly freeze up. No local storage so we were forced to boot from SAN. I prayed every time we rebooted that it would actually come back up. Plenty of times it didn't.
five82··on Why Steam Deck Is One of the Most Significant PC Gaming Moments in Years
At least you have plenty of options to conserve battery. capping framerate at 30 or 40 fps, FSR, configurable TDP limits, underclocking the GPU.
five82··on Telling your inner critic to chill
As someone who’s dealt with emotional abuse, this really struck a chord. You can see and understand the objective facts. But it’s very hard to accept positive reinforcement emotionally. You don’t believe it’s genuine.
five82··on Kids and music lessons: why do many promising players quit early?
I played trumpet, baritone, and tuba from elementary through high school. Learning how to play well was a grind for years and I didn't really start to enjoy it until I reached high school and was a part of a good ensemble.

It's definitely not fun when you and everyone around you is bad. Having a horrible teacher for a few years along the way didn't help either and drove most of my classmates to quit.

I do miss it and part of me wishes I had continued in college because I would have really enjoyed the challenge. But I was tired of "band cliques" and wanted to move on.

five82··on The situation at LastPass may be worse than they are letting on
May I ask how you accomplish this without any sort of burden? Because from my perspective, managing strong unique passwords for hundreds of accounts across desktop, mobile, servers, and other devices is a major pain and I’m tired of dealing with it.

It’s human nature to take shortcuts and develop bad habits when you’re dealing with a flawed system and poor tools that puts the burden on the end user to manage everything. And if I’m struggling with four decades of experience, how is the average non tech user expected to do it properly?

five82··on Orion has splashed down off the coast of Baja, California
I believe Apollo 8 was originally supposed to be a low earth orbit shakedown with the LEM. Because the LEM wasn’t ready, they decided to send them to the moon.
five82··on My full statement regarding DOOM Eternal
id Software has a long history of dysfunctional management that goes back to its inception. It’s probably not fair to single out John Carmack but there was plenty of backstabbing. All four founders left the company on bad terms.
five82··on Factorio for Nintendo Switch is now available
Use your Steam Deck how you want of course but the ability to customize controls through Steam Input is one of its best features.
five82··on Weed Is Coming to Circle K Gas Stations in US Next Year
Strange things are afoot at the Circle K.
five82··on Meet Silicon Valley’s rattled layoff ‘survivors’
Five years ago I was working for a large tech company and things were going downhill quickly in our division due to a failed acquisition. We were a very tight knit team that made a point to stick together, meet up regularly outside work, and help each other out through layoffs, departures, and other chaos. I owe my former co-workers a huge debt of gratitude for their help in getting my current job.
five82··on On eating out alone
I never really thought about it much but I tend to only get counter service if I eat alone out of habit. Since I’m typically by myself for lunch when I’m working, I’m admittedly missing out on some good dining options.
five82··on Build your career on dirty work
Speaking from 25 years of experience with dirty work, I completely agree that it’s not a great career path if you’re looking for anything other than more dirty work. Even your own team often doesn’t appreciate how much you make them look better. It’s too easy to be overlooked if you’re the one behind the scenes going above and beyond to ensure things are running well.

The best advice I can give is to be invaluable to your management and your company. Seek out and take advantage of the higher profile opportunities so you can gain the exposure you need for your career.

five82··on Linux from Scratch
Agreed. I went through about 70% of the runbook last year before running out of time and giving up. I used Gentoo in the early 2000’s and building an LFS system had been on my Linux bucket list since then.

Maybe it’s just me but the instructions seemed to focus too much on what to do and not nearly enough on why. I came out of it thinking that I learned much less than I expected.

five82··on Linux from Scratch
The outdated process is pointless. There are way too many rinse and repeat compilation steps. Focus the manual effort on the concepts that need to be taught and automate the rest. I feel like they make the default runbook overly tedious to give you a false sense of accomplishment.
five82··on IBM’s Watson Health is sold off in parts
That was the biggest problem. It wasn’t quite possible yet, at least with how IBM wanted to use it. Rometty and her executives believed their own marketing hype. It’s why, billions of dollars later, Watson Health failed because it couldn’t make better cancer treatment decisions. Watson Talent Management failed because it couldn’t make better hiring decisions. The tech was misused.
