frizzlebox··on Ask HN: How is the tech scene in LA?
> if you…are ok with driving there’s endless amounts of things to do and passionate people to meet.

I’m someone who is currently struggling to find these people; what has worked for you? It often feels that everyone cool is trapped in their car, and we are destined to never cross paths.

frizzlebox··on Donating forks to the dining hall
> why is the fork in the last picture obviously of a different type

I think that last bit is tongue-in-cheek. That’s my read, anyway.

frizzlebox··on Toon3D: Seeing cartoons from a new perspective
That might explain why it consistently kills Firefox Focus on my phone.
frizzlebox··on Ask HN: Why can't modern smartphones play music smoothly?
I’d get a single stutter seconds into playback of a new song fairly often when playing lossless on Apple Music on my iPhone, without Bluetooth.

I suspect that the stutter happens when it decides to change audio tracks to a higher bit rate stream, but that’s me talking out of my rear.

That particular problem went away once I turned off lossless in Apple Music settings.

frizzlebox··on Ask HN: What did you buy or considering buying this Black Friday?
Not a Black Friday deal, but I bought this waffle iron years ago and it has been a hit! Highly recommend, assuming you prefer Belgian style waffles.

frizzlebox··on Bandcamp support is faltering – maybe you should download your music now
It supports ALAC.

There’s a handy app called XLD (X Lossless Decoder) that will convert from FLAC to ALAC (and probably back) in a couple clicks if you need it. Lossless means I don’t really need to care whether my music is in an equivalent format, but I will admit it’s a bit silly.

frizzlebox··on Hardcoded Folder Icons in macOS
I’ve been doing this for years, it’s a nice touch!

Don’t forget to update the folder permissions to be like the others in your home directory. By default all users of your machine will have read access to the ~/Developer folder you create.

And while you’re at it, might as well pin that folder to the left side of Finder.

frizzlebox··on Mac OS Ventura Issues
I know you’re not asking for this, but in case you haven’t come across it before:

You can drill into zip files using QuickLook (i.e. by hitting space bar) with this QLGenerator:

frizzlebox··on Ask HN: Programs that saved you 100 hours? (2022 edition)
Everything is a godsend and ought to be built into Windows.

Agent Ransack (free for commercial use) and FileLocator Pro (paid, has near-instant indexed search) are the go to grep alternatives for Windows on my dev team. https://www.mythicsoft.com/

I also hear VS Code has ripgrep built in, but I haven’t used it extensively.

frizzlebox··on Tell HN: Apple refuses to delete a personal domain Apple ID that I didn't create
> I worked through the password reset flow and managed to set a new password to the account.

I did this once for a Microsoft account created under a relative's email address. I did a password reset and marked it for deletion, but whoever created the bogus account managed to get back in before the deletion request was processed. Now the email address is verified with Microsoft and not under my control whatsoever, with a phone number presumably for 2FA. :(

I figure the only chance I have to fix this is to get a job at Microsoft and go knocking on some doors...

frizzlebox··on AltTab: Windows Alt-Tab on macOS
Funny enough, I was looking for an app that did the opposite! I want macOS-style alt-tab and alt-` in Windows.

I found a program that seems to (mostly) work. I wish there were others like it: https://neosmart.net/blog/2017/easy-window-switcher/

frizzlebox··on Ask HN: What people skills do you wish you learned earlier in your career?
An aside: what do you want your legacy to be?
frizzlebox··on Exempting popular apps from data charges is anti-competitive
I honestly wrote that "anti-competitive" bit so it wouldn't look like I was defending anyone. You caught me trying to preempt being called a shill. It didn't work.
frizzlebox··on Exempting popular apps from data charges is anti-competitive
Adding to this, the T-Mobile FAQ claims they're willing to add legal services if you contact them:

http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/free-music-streaming.html

Will you add more streaming providers over time?

Absolutely! Any lawful and licensed streaming music service can work with us for inclusion in this offer, which is designed to benefit all of our Simple Choice customers. And we want to hear from you! Who do you think we should add next? Vote at #MusicFreedom and be heard!

If you are a streaming service provider Click here, send us an email and we’ll get back to you to begin the process.
Doesn't make it any less anti-competitive, I think, but it feels nice to see this kind of promise.
