ginko··on Bong: DuckDuckGo bang alternative, open-source and self-hosted
Browsers already support programmable search keywords. (Firefox does at least) I‘m using those quite a bit.

ginko··on Bear turns 10, and it still feels like day one
I thought this was about a literal bear. Then again 10 years is not much of an age even for a wild bear.
ginko··on Keeping Up Appearances – The women taking over the funeral industry
My understanding is that embalming is mainly an American thing, not a Western one. Caskets are also a lot cheaper around here (Austria).
ginko··on Diamond Transistor
Why do people still think they need to mess with scrolling on their websites?
ginko··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
>Perhaps for you, but I very much care about my laptop's size and especially it's weight, as I carry it around on a daily basis.

Thinner devices need more solid enforcement to stay stiff. My Thinkpad X60s weighs the same as a Macbook Air and it's infinitely more upgradable.

ginko··on Reverse engineer of PC-98 Touhou games retires
Well if dynamite fishers show up in your favorite fishing spot you might want to consider moving somewhere else at least.
ginko··on Reforming English Spelling
Random as in that's where Martin Luther came from.
ginko··on Sony Retires Its Last 4K Blu-ray Player in Japan, PS5 Is All That's Left
If you're referring to the RIAA equalization curve[1] that is completely open and well defined.

ginko··on Reforming English Spelling
German picked a random Central German dialect as Standard German and went with that.
ginko··on The Real Kevin Bacon
You forgot Lars von Trier
ginko··on The Real Kevin Bacon
Why not? He's been hugely active over a wide range of genres. He's the exact kind of actor I'd expect to be high up.
ginko··on The Real Kevin Bacon
I guess this is mainly about alive actors? Because for instance I'd expect Christopher Lee to be up there but he's not even in the list.

ginko··on I Love Software Rendering
If you want to have the true PSX gaming experience you can also round all vertex coordinates to the next pixel and force noperspective interpolation.
ginko··on New York City’s horse-drawn carriages expected to take their last trot
Viennese Fiaker horses are limited to 18 working days per month and there's already temperature limits. Whether those should be lowered further is up for discussion. the current limits for horses are already lower than for outdoor laborers in Vienna.

IMO completely banning horse carriages in Vienna is overshooting.

ginko··on Porsche Mission S
So is this an EV or an ICE car? The rev counter makes me think ICE?
ginko··on AI models may soon self-replicate without access to data centers
Anthropic: "Oh no! Small (open source) models might self-replicate. Better ban those. :^)"
ginko··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
I wouldn't want to be hit by those headlights as a pedestrian..
ginko··on Every US Electrical Outlet Explained [video]
IMO they're completely overengineered. There's nothing useful they can do that schuko can't. (the built-in fuse and fixed polarity aren't useful)
ginko··on A Cray-1 supercomputer replica from 30 "obsolete" Mac Minis
>The Cray-1 team hopes to fill the currently empty second half of the tower through a crowdfunding campaign to secure 70–80 additional M4 Mac Minis. The goal: create a cluster capable of ranking on the TOP500 supercomputers list.

Is ~100 Mac Minis really all it takes to get into the TOP500 these days?

ginko··on The Philadelphia Inquirer built Scrape, an AI tool to surface hyperlocal news
Yeah
ginko··on The Nintendo 64 Partner-N64 Development Kit
The article mentioned this needed a modified N64 to route the extra debug signals from the cartridge to the CPU. That got me wondering since afaik there are no unused cartridge pins on the N64.

Turns out it's actually a bit more complicated. The Partner-N64 uses some little-used analog input pins (LAUDIO, RAUDIO, VIDEO_SYNC) for this. The modification also requires cutting the lines to the system's DAC chip to work.

ginko··on Show HN: Raven – The harness of harnesses, built for RSI
You'd think everyone working in tech would be aware that RSI was a widely used acronym already.
ginko··on The Murky History of Soviet-Born Tetris
The Game Boy version of Tetris was entirely made by Nintendo R&D1 in Kyoto. It only used the licensed concept.
ginko··on The Mafia may be keeping fentanyl out of Italy
Why do you keep using confusing abbreviations like that?
ginko··on Oracle cites 'force majeure' to shield itself on controversial data center
Millions per month is tens per minute. That doesn't seem like all that much to me?
ginko··on Samsung accidentally freezes its smart fridges with a software update
I have yet to understand what the value proposition of an internet-connected refrigerator is.
ginko··on U.S. Small Biz Can't Ship to the EU Anymore
The PPWD is a terrible law and should have never been adopted in that form. FWIW the commission is rushing to fix it.[1] Their general guidance is also to ignore this for now but I can see small business being squeamish.

ginko··on The Millennium Problems for Biology
> Demonstrate the ability to cryopreserve and recover live wild-type mice with high viability.

I thought we already managed to successfully cryopreserve and recover small rodents like hamsters in the 50s.

Edit: See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryopreservation#History
