harvey9··on Running a law firm on Free software
Reading the blog post, he isn't doing anything that unusual just using some open source applications that other people can use just as easily.
harvey9··on Every Mac comes with an (undocumented) family member classifier
As a general rule you cannot override national law by accepting service terms.
harvey9··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
A lot of people do not work in jobs where that flexibility is practical, regardless of the legal right to request flexible working in Britain.
harvey9··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
I have never visited but I imagine two people one on either side cannot hear each other even if they shouted, and of course cannot see each other. The etymology need not be based on history or practical use.
harvey9··on Britain to make salary disclosure in job ads mandatory
This is usually called bait and switch, but your point still stands.
harvey9··on Guerrilla bike lanes: San Francisco makes illicit infrastructure permanent (2016)
Adding a crosswalk may be dangerous depending on the location.
harvey9··on 'It's just vape, nail, charity shops': Can anything save UK high street?
Numerous reports over many years that they don't have many real customers and exist mainly to enable a tax scam / money laundering.
harvey9··on 'It's just vape, nail, charity shops': Can anything save UK high street?
The article is from the UK where two stories buildings with a shop on the street front and accommodation above is very common.
harvey9··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
I would rather see the onus on the company owners to be responsible for what they sell. Serious penalties for seriously bad products.
harvey9··on Hackers hit French national blood bank
I read it as meaning China is more likely to track down and prosecute the attackers. I use the term prosecute loosely.
harvey9··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
I was thinking years ago a western kid in a school that didn't ask much of them still had more chance of getting access to a computer and teaching themselves. But yes, the incentive for Russia kids to study is much more stark.
harvey9··on Show HN: Warsaw in voxels – An interactive 3D map of the city centre
It was raining when I opened it. Is that tied to the live weather?

It's really good, and responsive in Firefox on my android tablet.

harvey9··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
I wonder if general wider availability of computers means there were more chances a bright kid would be able to get a start in the field regardless of overall education systems.
harvey9··on Supermarket freezers across Europe hit by second suspected cyber-attack
That last line sounds like not wanting to go to war with Russia is a bad thing. Most Russians don't want to go to war either which is why those who can are dodging Putin's draft.
harvey9··on A 1580 Map Shows Why Data Visualization Is Never Neutral
If you had access to all the underlying data could you then achieve a neutral visualization?
harvey9··on Tree-mounted machines connect to web app to let users knock on wood remotely
This reads like a genuine service rather than a gimmick.
harvey9··on We won't "just hang out"
Slightly tangential: I get bored with most games very quickly but I am happy to sink time into messing around in code. I wanted to make a simulation of a real place and make it more interesting to a general audience than just showing stats and plots. in researching this I found there's quite a few people making city builder games for themselves and chronicling their projects on YouTube.
harvey9··on StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month
As you said elsewhere here, the site is not good at communicating its expectations. To the outsider it looks like a huge pool of questions and answers to which you may as well add yours.

The one thing I really liked was how it tried to find existing questions and answers that were like yours during the question input phase, but that is also why it came off as hostile when you subsequently collected down votes even after passing through this filter

harvey9··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
Are you sure? I work across a few hospitals in the UK and can't recall seeing a fax in the last decade.
harvey9··on “AI Skills” are worthless in 2026
You might be assuming that the skill is standalone and that the market will see a goldrush that drives the price to near zero.

An analyst could learn enough SQL in a few weeks to make their workflow better (leaving aside that AI analyst is already a thing).

Almost anyone could spend a few weeks getting a heavy truck license. Barriers to entering this trade are not that high but earnings have stabilised above subsistence level.

harvey9··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
You objectively have a more crowded neighborhood though, regardless of you being happy with the end result.
harvey9··on Root shell on Samsung TV
This is why Hollywood cornered the market in slapstick comedy in the silent movie era
harvey9··on US inequality is getting worse in ways you might not expect
That first class is probably lobbying rather than voting.
harvey9··on A practical guide to AI image generation, from diffusion to agents
My friend who is professional artist argues that no photography is art. If you disregard his view then you need to define where art begins and 'some rando with a camera' ends.
harvey9··on A practical guide to AI image generation, from diffusion to agents
Wish my high school art teacher had graded on conceptualisation instead of execution
harvey9··on America has lost 200k of jobs in media, film and the arts. How much is AI?
But unless you intend to sell up then what you now have is a more crowded neighborhood and in some cases higher property taxes.
harvey9··on Appreciating the beauty of all your body's scars and scratches
The charitable interpretation is that they meant the scar left after a tumor was removed but they have not argued the point very well.
harvey9··on New AI Is More Than Twice as Good at Diagnosing Diseases as Doctors
Agree. I have been an EMT and I have been a patient in a teaching hospital. You would need video, and then a robot arm to test if that is pitting edema, continuing your illustration.
harvey9··on New AI Is More Than Twice as Good at Diagnosing Diseases as Doctors
Most ER work is urgent but familiar even to junior staff, and a lot of it is not life-threatening either. If they need to 'keep you alive' then they are following established protocols, not asking an LLM for advice.
harvey9··on New AI Is More Than Twice as Good at Diagnosing Diseases as Doctors
Averages are not much use if you are the patient whose diagnosis was missed
